I agree, I would lose the community. I would focus on the blog and the newsletter. But this only comes on the chopping block because I have felt as if I’m mostly blocking spammers… I felt it was becoming a ghost town!

On the locking of old posts, I can ask simplepress to develop that and they might do it. But the fact is, the filter states, do not cache /*forum.  So I would have to change the urls?

If I change the urls, any links to them would be lost (very bad happening), so it’s a huge decision.

I would not want to lose links unless the front end/ new thread were hopping and attracting throngs of people.

Moving to a new domain might be a good solution. That’s actually what the simplepress people advised.  I would lose the links though… which may be gone anyway.  Time flies!

On the offer of $ I appreciate it. All donations to help sustain us, are greatly appreciated. I don’t have a plan right now.  This thread has yielded a lot of ideas and info. Input in, but no output yet.  Thank you! 🙂

If you lock the old forum posts by date, you could allow the more recent forum posts to cache.  The URL wouldn’t change, you would just allow the recent posts in the forum to cache with the rest of the site, so you wouldn’t need the “do not cache” filter.

Maybe its possible to have the old forum posts become a searchable archive, on demand.  I’m not sure if Simplepress can do that or not.

If not, a new domain for forum posts looks like the best bet.

simplepress has lock and not lock like it has edit and not edit

I have posted about this on their help forum. They are the people who laid this out for me and said… a dedicated site!

But if I do that, the average site speed would be hideous, because it would not be offset by the blog, which is blazing at this point.

The best thing to do, is to leave as-is, I think. But I’d have not known this if I had not started this thread.

The fact is, I am human. And I need feedback and encouragement and such, too. I need to know that my effort has a purpose.

I forgot to mention that I don’t find the site “slow” – but then I can’t compare with others.. Maybe the slow you are talking about is in reference to the tech judges of internet (the link you posted, with percentages), not how people feel it on the receiving end.

Also wanted to add that in real life I don’t know many people, I’m not much of a socializer, but the people here I really feel like friends, although “virtual”. The things that are shared are integrated into my thoughts, I wonder how people are doing, hope they’re OK, laugh or feel sad or ponder subjects of all sorts that pop up here. This really adds depth to my life!

So, I hope the forum will keep going, in one form or another.

This forum has been sped up greatly in the last few months.

As for google, they want mobile only. They do not want people to have desktops because they want LOCATION data, which is very valuable.

People are impatient on phones. The 4+ seconds it takes to load a thread is entirely unacceptable.

So this where the standard is coming from.

So basically they’re applying pressure because they want our DATA. It’s their currency. 😖

Yes, I imagined it was also for their benefit (Google’s), not just for the users’.

Also understand the impatience part. Stuff going faster & faster all the time. People just don’t want to waste their precious time… 4+seconds… ab-so-lute-ly unacceptable!

Can’t help but think of the old expression “Going nowhere fast”

Thanks for the additonal explanation.

I agree the site is not slow for me. Seems to be ok for most here. I understand that if Google thinks its slow, then it affects where you are on the search page? But in reality, it is NOT slow.

Also, as far as just closing the site to new posts- I think that would be the death of this whole thing. I wouldn’t visit a “dead” forum. (I feel like I already posted this somewhere, if so, sorry). Thats why even bumping old threads doesn’t really revitalize them. The spirit and energy of this forum is very Uranian to me- fresh, new, cutting edge, constantly evolving. If you take away that aspect, I just don’t think it will help the site thrive in any way.

If the threads were closed it would be so they could be cached / archived. This would not be a place to hang out, since no one could post. It would become a place that showed up in search… people would read the thread and go.

I only consider this because people don’t like this place, anyway!  Who cares?

But now you are letting me know that you do care. It means the world!

Well, the service here is better than the service of a 16 year old McDonald’s worker, I bet! wink

Anonymous – you’re looking for trouble!!! 🙂 I had a horrible image of you being smotherd by a posse of 16-year-old McDonalds workers!

I’m still laughing thinking about it. This is so politically incorrect!

That’s right. Your phone, which never leaves your side, is like an implant. With a desktop, you can walk away.

I figured out the problem with the forum: it’s too freaking interesting!

i just logged on to see what’s happening and one hour later I haven’t posted anything but I have read *so much* fascinating, stimulating and heartwarming material – and now it is time to unplug!

thank you.

I don’t care for this data, which I have given no right to sell.

Companies make tons of cash of data which should be legally those whose data it stems from.

I am ALL for PC.
