My cousin has a green thumb and whatever plants people give him end up flourishing.

I’m thinking about plant metaphors and don’t know that much about taking care of plants. It’s foreign to me. I’d love to hear stories, both good and bad, because while I don’t garden or plan to garden, I think I could learn something.

For example, someone I knew used to talk about taking care of roses and pruning dead branches for growth. They used this story to teach.

I do have a green thumb, I’d like to post pics but I keep getting a ‘photo too large’ message.  I think if you want to be successful with a plant, first you have to know your plant.  Where did it originally come from?  Different plants need different amounts of light and moisture.  Giving a plant too much light can scorch it, too little will kill it too. If you live WAY up North you may not be able to grow some plants at all due to lack of light.  And the wrong amount of water will do it even faster.  What kind of soil does it like?  Rich?  Well drained?  Or none at all, like many of the tree orchids or cacti?  Does it go through a ‘rest period’ where it needs no light or water?  Amaryllis do this, many bulb plants do.  How often and how much do you feed it?  When it’s blooming or just in the spring?  If you do some research online or with books it can help you be successful with plants.

Not much to add to KaD’s good advice!

I have just to suggest (from my own experience):

– Lots of observation -> check out the plants often, including up close (parasites can be tiny & do a lot of damage befor you notice it)

– Don’t take on more plants than you can handle (or have room for), otherwise it gets difficult to care for them with attention

– If you’re starting out, maybe don’t tackle “difficult” plants that demand special needs/are delicate (I’m thinking Orchids, although if you live in a rain jungle this would not be problem)

I like Teresina’s idea about plant metaphors!

Note to Kad: somewhere here at EE someone (Glenn, I think) explained how to prepare images to be able to post them, but I don’t know how to find his post. Eager to see your plants!

On the pics…I did check the settings. I don’t see anything changed / impacted by the hack so I am assuming this is isolated. If not, please report on the site trouble thread.

My cousin said he just waters them. His friend does the same thing, but he kills the plants. He gives the same plant to my cousin, and it thrives.

I like the advice so far. 🙂
