A canvas version of a Banksy icon, Balloon Girl, just self-destructed after fetching $1.4m on the auction block. Shredded in nano-seconds (Uranus) under everyone’s eyes (5H).

After all those years, the identity of the person(s) behind the Banksy moniker (and art – Neptune) remains a mystery (Neptune). Banksy is generally referred to as “he” and I will say “he” for the sake of keeping things simple. But he is an elusive (Neptune) artist (Neptune). He comes and goes unseen, ungraspable (Neptune).

You know he’s been by because like the tide (Neptune), he leaves his mark.

He is stealth (Uranus/Neptune) but at the same time very much a performance artist (Leo/5H), an astute businessman (Capricorn/10H) and a sincere? or mock? or opportunistic? anti-capitalist commenter (Uranus rebel?) ???

What is your take on the Banksy person / phenomenon ?

A video supposedly by Banksy showing the shredder device he implanted in the frame doesn’t make sense to me. The blades are not aligned at the right angle to shred the image the way we saw in the Sotheby’s live video. Anybody else notice that? Or am I just geometrically challenged?

I’m not sure about the teeth. At first, I thought that is stupid but if they were the other way then it might have gotten stuck like a paper jam in a paper shredder. They could be angled and sharpened on the back so that it is like sliding over very sharp razor blades.

I don’t particularly care for the art. I’m not against it I just don’t find it appealing. I do however find it interesting from the standpoint of how well it is thought out. The Steve Jobs one in the immigrant camp is brilliant.

I don’t know what I think about it shredding. Here someone thought they were going to be a big deal and show it off to their friends and it’s just a pile of crap now. But how disgusting to be cheated out of the money.

That is bizarre. Publicity stunt? Epic prank? Dirty trick? Art?

I am a fan of his street art… but not sure what to make of this. I imagine it sucks to not get what you paid 1.4 million$ for. I wonder if the purchaser will be compensated for damages? Some people saying now it’s worth even more though. Who knowshmmm_gif

I see Uranus (shock effect), Neptune (elusive), Mercury (prankster) and probably some Pluto (hidden/mysterious) at play too.

The buyer, a European woman, has decided to go ahead with the transaction for the partly-shredded piece, figuring she now owns a piece of art history. The painting has been renamed Love Is in the Bin.
