At midnight, Georgia’s shelter in place orders for all but the medically fragile will expire.

I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing, hang back for awhile, and see what happens. Governor Kemp has asked that we keep wearing masks and social distancing for now. Riiiiight. Most people aren’t doing that now!

Things are gonna start re-opening here too (Canada), starting Monday.

I have no say in the matter, and can see the pros and cons.

Where I do have agency is in what I choose to do myself.

It’s gonna be very simple: I had made the decision before anybody else in my family, workplace and town: I would go to work (I’m a grocery worker and cannot afford to be without income) and then go home and stay there (other than walks, post office and gas about once a month, and a couple of other strictly-no-contact obligations I had).

This is what I will continue doing, possibly/probably for the next 18-24 months.

Everybody else can and will do as they deem fit, as they have all along.

The whole situation is very complex and there is no One Perfect Solution For Everyone.

All I know is I want to have a (reasonably) clear conscience when this is all said and done. (I am not perfect and hindsight being 20/20, I may regret a thing or two, but hopefully nothing too flagrant or plain stupid.)

If I survive this shitshow, I want to be proud of myself.

This doctor talks about his experience working with COVID-19 patients, and how the medical community may need to take a different approach in treating the respiratory issues that come up (in some cases, the ventilators are doing more harm than good).

I’d like to see studies on how COVID-19 interacts with red blood cells–I read somewhere that it separates heme iron from RBCs when it invades cells, and THAT’S what causes people to go into respiratory distress so quickly. Without iron, RBCs cannot pick up oxygen from the lungs. As the virus attacks more cells, the effects accumulate. If that’s the case, ventilators won’t do much good.

Also, I want to see studies done on why the blood of COVID-19 patients gets thicker.

Maybe these studies are already going on. I would like to see us get a clearer picture of exactly how this virus works and what it does in the body so we can attack it with more confidence, short-term and long-term.

Anyway, check this out.

Yes, I agree, my gosh, we need some study results. The scariest part of this covid is the unknown factor. It is so new and unique that doctors are learning as they treat. What I can’t get over is how one person will be okay and another will be fighting for their life. Too many people are falling in the latter category. More may be able to pull through, but not without ICU intervention.

I have read what you are saying regarding the attacking of blood cells, disallowing the efficient carrying of oxygen. It’s disturbing how this disease causes clots and even strokes in all age groups, and that blood thinners have to be administered.

Yes, apparently ventilators should be used as a very last resort and avoided if you can. Best to just get oxygen treatment & IV meds, as once you are placed asleep on ventilation the stats are not so favourable. Thankfully, some do pull through, and if there’s no other options we just have to pray and maintain the faith that our loved ones or ourselves would be one of the lucky ones.

I’m sorry for your and your friend’s loss, Liz.

The people who die are not just statistics, they are all each and every one someone’s loved one – parent, child, sibling, spouse, friend, etc.

Thanks for letting us know, sharing this with us. I don’t care about the daily numbers spewed out on the news. I care about the stories of the individuals affected.

Take good care of yourself (emotionally and physically) and of your friend.

Thanks.  Sad really.  The north east has gotten hit really hard.  In my county there are 5500 cases.  She was in Philadelphia.
