Does growing up in a bad environment predispose someone to become a criminal?

It seems criminals come from all walks of life, but it's still widely believed that it's life conditions that drive a person to become a criminal.

What do you think?

I think there are several factors involved.

External circumstances (does the individual have their essential needs met or not?) indeed have an impact on a person's desire or refusal to commit crimes. And then, there is personal willpower that determines whether a person can resist the temptation to commit crimes or not, and whether a person is willing to listen to Saturn figures or not.

I also think emotional self-mastery and social skills (how well a person can react to challenging life circumstances such as a tense relationship, or getting laid off, or dealing with considerable stress, or struggling to fit in) are factors too.

I think it's free will, but agree there is a genetic component...sure of this, being from a family of criminals and all.:)

A person with organic issues such as neurotransmitters imbalance can be largely affected by the setting and upbringing provided by the family if its members are not capable of handling their share of responsibility. Unhealthy patterns of attachment, emotionally unavailable parents, and such, can do horrible things to a person's mind. And it's difficult to get rid of a deeply distorted perception of the world once it has been forced upon you. I'd be tempted to go for "bred", but I'll say both.

I can tell you my grandparents were wonderful hardworking honest people. My dad was a criminal until he was too old to be one anymore.

He was raised in a very nice home with nice things and was also given opportunity. He decided to run with a pack of wolves and get into trouble.

He practically killed his parents with worry. And broke them financially until they just decided to stop throwing money at it.

I know he wasn't bred that way. No bad examples were ever set for him.
