I’m going to read about the health of a person’s intellect. Their sanity, basically.

Reminds me of back when Saturn was in Virgo – work for your mental health.

It may sound stupid to some, but I don’t think losing your mind would be that enjoyable.

How can an intellect become ill? Any ideas?

I think you can ruin the intellect with drugs. I went to high school with one of the most intelligent guys I’ve ever met. He had 2 severe losses during Jr. and Sr. years, with one parent dying in a car accident, and the other by suicide. He was never the same. He got really heavy into drugs. He started his own religion and last I heard he was homeless and completely out of his mind.

I agree, in regards to drugs, kab.

I also think skills degrade if they aren’t utilized.

This book is interesting. I am barely into it and captured by it. I will write about it when I have a chance to think things through. It’s hard right now, with the site stuff going on and a lot of consultation, which require my focused concentration.

But he’s writing about how the words, “unimaginable” and “inconceivable” have become interchangeable…in the 1940’s.

He’s right about this in 2014, that’s for sure.

I don’t know. I have a lot to say, once I can get the chance to say it! :)

I’ve had the same experience as kab (pretty much).  One of the sharpest guys I’ve ever known completely lost it when he started drugs.  It was a shame…  🙁

I also think you can contaminate your intellect with not examining your sources.  Not sexy, I know, but with the glut of info out there you never know whether some[thing] is reliable unless you check, check, and recheck.  Yanno?  GIGO.  Easy to go down the rabbit hole.

ETA:
Also agreeing with disuse.  Just didn’t know how to phrase it.  🙂

Agree on drugs and misusage. But also think, one can ruin his / her own intellect by too much thinking. One can get obsessive about a topic and start thinking in circles. Getting back to the same point but in different ways, having more solutions to one problem but not using any solutions to get past the problem, starting again. The multiple solutions exist next to each other and after a while you can’t tell which one is true. You bend reality.

That’s interesting too, whynot.
I’m reading about the bad effect, imagination has on the intellect. :)

Drugs.  Especially if your intellect isn’t too keen to begin with and you have dormant mental issues that were brought to the surface by heavy drug use.

Also if being smart or sharp or curious are discouraged.  This is way more common that you would think.  As a Virgo Mercury peep, it scares me.

Lack of proper stimulation; intellect, like other things, I think, needs to be nurtured. If you lead an intellectually poor Life, without valuable intellectual inputs, without learning, without developing at least a little bit of curiosity and without the proverbial “food for thought” then you’re wasting this gift, your intellect will become atrophied and unhealthy. Healthy intellect needs dynamism, a curious mind.

Anyone who holds onto strong beliefs.  You know, so tightly that their knuckles go white.  They can do this for a lifetime too!  Strong beliefs mean that something has to definitely be ‘this’ and can never be ‘that’.  Remember they used to think the earth was flat, and burn people at the stake for suggesting otherwise?  That type of thing.  Think how much difficulty there was for all the brilliant scientists when quantum physics came along knocking Newtons theories out of whack.

Intellect needs an open mind to function healthily; strong, fixed, beliefs keep the door to it stuck fast.  Even keeping it ajar is a good plan…

But of course it is in human nature to want certainty – that includes me!  Sigh, the battle continues :)

Actually, I’m wonderin’ if this is exactly what Pluto/Uranus aspects are designed to do, whump the ass off old ways of thinking.
