Tarot has been helpful for me too.

Just fyi, septic tanks rarely (like every few years) have to be emptied. Theres bacteria/yeast that you can put in there that breaks it all down or often it’s just naturally occurring. So hopefully that’s not a thing you have to deal with!

Oh really! The landlady said I need to call the service every three months and not to flush when I pee! That was what my city brain couldn’t take. Maybe they have a different system?

I don’t know maybe your tank is tiny? I just know that we only empty ours every few years. I’d probably listen to your landlady though! That’s not something you wanna mess with lol. In any case, sounds like it will be a good retreat for you.

I have a septic tank and we only get it pumped every 2-3 years.  It could go longer, but I don’t like to take a chance.

That tank sounds like it’s too small and has a problem.  It may have too small of a seepage pit.  That means that if you flush too much it could flood the area of the yard where the pit is.  That would be very bad and smelly.

From 20 years of government work, my knowledge says your septic tank may really be what we would call a holding tank. You live north of temperate climate.

In temperate climate, septic tanks are part of a system. The tank allows solids to fall to the tank bottom while liquids flow to lateral lines, wetlands, or spray systems to dispose of the liquid. Essentially, plant life takes up the liquid. The settled solids are pumped when they accumulate to a set level.  The solids should not be allowed to fill the tank and flow into and clog the liquid processing equipment.

In areas where the lateral lines, etc., are not possible, the septic tank is used as a holding tank that must be pumped out when it is filled. There should be a gauge to show when the tank needs emptying.

Too much info? smile

Never too much info. 🙂

Would wood be your only source of heat?  I hope not.  We have a wood fireplace that supplements the regular heating system.  You can go through a lot of wood just for 1 fire.  You need dry, seasoned wood.  Fresh cut wood won’t burn.

My house is in the woods on a mountain and our winters are mostly snowy and freezing.  We wouldn’t make it without a snow blower.

I might need to ask for your advice Jo France, in the very near future. I am literally like a babe in the woods (see what I did there?) in terms of living in the countryside, owning a house or facing the elements in winter time.

Its tough, Curl, if the weather is bad.  You’ll need to prepare because you’ll be on your own.  If you’re snowed in you’re not going to easily get out.  Its survival mode sometimes.  No one can get to you either.  You need to be self sufficient.

I’ve lived in my house for 30 years and when I first moved to the country I was open minded but unprepared for a lot of things.  Still, I wouldn’t change what I did because I discovered the beauty of nature in every season.  I became part of it and the animals in the woods accepted me as part of their environment.  Nature changed my life with their innocence.

Despite any hardship its all worth it.

I don’t know. I live in the country and I wouldn’t sign up for that hardship even though I have lived without an indoor toilet and heated the home with wood. Maybe think about it again after Venus gets farther away from Neptune

Curl, you are giving me Susan Branch vibes, lol!

She took it a bit further, though, by moving cross-country (from Southern California to New England, staying for three months, and deciding to make it permanent by buying a house!

Ha! I will have to look her up. Existential crises make people stark raving mad. 🙂
