How Are You Dealing With Inflation?

I don’t know if this is fighting inflation but some time late last year/early this year, I needed heavy cream for something (probably Christmas, actually). I had trouble finding even one pint but I did. Remembering this, the next time I saw it on the shelves I bought a pint and put it in the freezer, just to have.

I took it out a couple weeks ago to thaw and I was going to make scones, but was short on time and I made something else. So it was sitting there and I couldn’t let it go. So yesterday I shook it up and whipped it into butter. But I already have butter out so back it went into the freezer until I need it!

But now I have buttermilk and I can’t stand to drink it so I found a bread recipe that uses it. I know you can make pancakes, etc, too.

Anyway, it pains me to throw food away (if it can’t be composted or fed to the animals).

@allie120 I hate to waste as well. My mom talked about her father picking up habits from the Depression and I always took that very seriously. I had a few years where that mentality really saved me. Also, your buttermilk story reminds me of when I volunteered at a house museum when I lived in New Orleans. We gave demonstrations in the 1830s (outdoor) kitchen and took home to eat what we had made. My husband loves to do all the cooking in our household, but if we needed to prepare a beehive oven or cook over a fire with a pot on a swing arm crane, I'm ready for it!

Edit to add, my elder volunteers taught me about the egg test. If it's past expiration date, fill a cup with water and drop an egg in it. If it sinks it's good, and if it floats it has gasses in it and should be tossed. This has saved me a lot of the years but particularly recently.

@tbb That’s so cool about volunteering and demonstrations you did! No matter what anyone thinks, it’s always valuable that someone knows how to do those things. And thanks for the tip on the eggs.

My mother used to (probably still does many of these things) reuse tea bags, save and reuse foil, waxed paper, etc., if they’re not dirty. I have the ration books from WWII from her and my grandparents and uncle. She was born during the Depression but she remembers a lot from WWII

The tooth fairy has been dealing with inflation too. My granddaughter lost her first tooth this week. The tooth fairy left her $5.00. When l lost my teeth l received 25 cents. Says an awful lot doesn't it?

Prices are just outrageous anymore, I have a family of four and am spending at least $300 a week on groceries and that's about double what it was pre-pandemic! I have two boys and they have very hearty appetites!

I also have noticed shrinkflation as in there is much less in the packaging for the same price! I recently bought some hard taco shells (old el paso) and I swear they are half their normal size, mini tacos now!

I have also noticed the packaging on cereal boxes is so flimsy that when you hold the box to pour the cereal the box caves in.

In reading through the comments it's funny because around Christmas time I also had the darnest time finding heavy whipping cream at my grocery store, it was quite frustrating because I had so many recipes that I wanted to make that called for it. Spoke with the manager and they said they were having a hard time getting it in. I went to the walmart grocery and they had tons of it! I guess walmart got it all. I hate shopping there because they have only self check outs and I don't like to do that especially for a big shop but I did get my heavy whipping cream.
