The internet became ‘a thing’ around the mid-1990’s, like somewhere between 1994 and 1996. What were you doing during that era? Were you in a happy place? A dark place? Was it just another time for you?

What do you think about the pre-internet days? What about the internet era? How has society changed since then?

I got a computer in 1993. I got online for the first time, in 1995.

I went straight to the alt.astrology blush

I posted something stupid… a Scorpio astrologer emailed me a nasty note (mars mercury).  My first email.

I answered the bastard… we became friends.

In fact, I wrote him (and vice versa) obsessively for six months… at which point we both detached for exhaustion.

He has a PhD and of course, I am a dipshit.

Anyway, he’s still around. He posts here on occasion.  He’s greeeeat!

Wow, you were an early user. I didn’t use the internet for the first time until 1998. Yeah!

To think you can know someone online for 25 years… it’s amazing.

One more thing.. The internet is an amazing tool but I would not mind to see a world with no internet.

Just conversations & real interactions. Sounds dreamy to me!

I like the internet pre-Social Media. I’m guessing around the late 00’s decade, was when social media become huge, like 2007, 2008, 2009, etc, etc.

Aug 1997. After an 8 month separation from my ex instead of a family vacation he buys a computer to have the internet. So I found his conversation log. Ha

Sept I signed on to aol. This was the first taste of the outside world. {grew up in a small town stayed there for 43 years.} I got to know so many people from all over the country. It was awesome. My mind had become stagnant and it was wonderful to meet so much intellect and creativity.

So by the end of Oct I had filed for divorce and the aol chat rooms became my therapy. I met my present husband on line a couple of years later.

Awesome topic!

I have to trace back to what city, what apartment, I was living in at the time because I am picturing where I put that first computer, which of course was a big box.

So that put some it around 1997 or so? I had it on a low coffee table (I would sit on the floor) in my studio apartment. I don’t remember the first website but I remember going on a dating site and meeting a couple people. A dud. Then a nice guy I dated for a little bit.

I still had that computer when I moved to Connecticut in 2000. I used to stream Art Bell Coast to Coast’s episode the following day. A lot of times the internet connection would disconnect. Remember that dial up sound EEEEEEEE RRRRRRR AAAAAHHHHHHH DING

At the time, we did have internet at my job and I remember having no clue how to go on a website. Someone had to show me how to type in an address on the search bar.

No social media. I didn’t go on any forums because I didn’t realize there were interesting ones there. Social media is nice, a good way to learn, connect, read things you wouldn’t get a chance to otherwise. But it can be more viscous than anything, except getting cornered by a gang with no way out. So it really is how you use it. It’s like a gun.

Art Bell’s show began in the early to mid-90’s, so it was in time for the internet!

Sept 1997. I had just started college. I took an intro class to computer science I think. I got a home computer a few months later because I needed one to do lots of papers and essays. My parents bought it for me and I’m sure it was used because they didn’t have much money. My moms cousin came over and set it up for us because we had no idea how to. I remember typing a paper early on and leaving the room for a drink and when I came back I unplugged the computer when I almost tripped, losing all my work. I think I cried. LOL

Around 2000 I started using the computer for more than college work with AIM (Instant Messenger) with friends. That was fun.

I just looked at my chart for that time. Pluto had just entered Sadge in my 9th house of higher education. Figures.  I loved getting to college and meeting so many different people from different cultures and backgrounds. Fun times.

I don’t think pre- internet days are good or bad, just different. My kids have no idea what it’s like to grow up without internet. We do use it a lot but we balance it out by being outdoors and being social. I make it a priority.

I just remembered that I had used a computer before this. Middle school I think so possibly early 90’s. Big clunky Apple computer. Black screen and green letters and these huge black floppy disks. It was around when Madonna’s Vogue had come out. I don’t even know how I remembered this. I don’t even remember what we did on it but I remember it being in a classroom.
