I have to share this with you guys. I was talking a couple weeks ago to the gal that is my stepdads relief caregiver about her ten year old son. She was talking about how he was into Harry Pottter. And that he liked to collect rocks and he wouldn’t throw any of them away and it was frustrating. She said he had them all laid out on a pillowcase on his nightstand and sit and look at it. And if she moved any of it he would get upset. I told her “thats his altar!” and explained the significance of the practice and she totally got it after I explained it.

I just thought it was so cool that he naturally created one. I gave her some palo santo for him to burn (because of course hes gonna wanna burn something right!?) and suggested that he might like some kind of simple (maybe animal) oracle cards to read. The next day she came back and said that they were going to make their own cards, which I thought was just amazing of her.

Love this topic too! The ones you shared are beautiful! (And Winter Moon’s too funny, so like her, it sems!) But this is logical, for such personal things to reflect the  personality of the owner.

I discovered home alters at a neighbor’s house the last time I was in California years ago. I thought this was so cool, so “california” to me. There are traditional ones in different cultures, usually religious, but the California style is something else.

I have “sort of” alters all over my place, they are more like a collection of feel-good objects. But I have a spirit lamp in the small entrance of my place, which I use for connection.

I took a pic of one group of objects in my bathroom, but my computer is currently out of whack so can’t send it from this tablet.

I love the story about your stepdad’s caregiver & her son. I’ve got stones in every room of my place – some dating back to my childhood! I can really understand this little boy! (The only place without stones is WC. Now that I think about it, might fond an appropriate specimen for that area too…)

Thanks for sharing!

Well, yeah, I call it California style b/c that’s where I saw it, & it was cool and informal, original & colorful too. Haven’t seen any others, like maybe a New York alter. Maybe that would look different, or Ohio alter… Alaska? Hawaii?

Actually, to me your alter does indeed look like California! 🙂

I think I figured out how to include a pic.

Must add that I do not practice Catholic religion, in spite of appearances…! I also have buddhas, ganeshes etc.

This group in in my bathroom.

I love it! That anatomy card looks like an Alex Gray card collection that I just ordered but with a different background. I can’t wait to put them on my altar!

It’s one of those cards where the picture changes when you move it.

It goes from a woman’s body, to her organs, then to her skeleton…

Morphing!

Oops, just realized I was misspelling altar. Sorry bout that.

The word altar to me is the physical representation of a focus place to worship or to contemplate on anything personal. I don’t worship my plants they’re on a windowsill but have been around a long time, propagating over and over. I care for them and know and respect they are living things. Little 25 cents half dead supermarket plants no one wanted brought home in mid winter. Low maintenance, unlike a pet or a person, ha ha.
