I tend to naturally and subconsciously create an altar space, wherever I live. I find that it really helps ground me and focus my energy. I don’t have any specific theme, just stuff I think is cool and has good energy. Lots of natural found objects. Tumbled gemstones in a grid, feathers, acorns. A Buddha/Shakti statue. Tarot or oracle cards that I’ve pulled. My Native American flute. A chalice of water. Candles. Palo Santo in a bowl (but I have several things I burn to consecrate it and myself when needed, sweetgrass, sage, cedar, dragons blood incense). My pendulum.

How about you all? Feel free to post pictures. (I had one posted and then suddenly felt not right about that so I took it down, but still please I’d love to see those that feel comfortable with doing so).

I had an altar, years ago, when I was inquiring into Orthodox Christianity. Home altars are common with them. It allows the faithful to worship from home when they can’t go to the services (like now).

After I made mine, I took pictures, but doubt I kept any of them. Basically I had a nightstand covered with a scarf, a picture of Christ, picture of Mary, crucifix, a palm frond from Palm Sunday service, a small prayer book, and a vigil candle. The candle was tricky to do, since I had to fashion a wick-holder from a paper clip or something, and fill the candle holder with olive oil. Technically a vigil candle stays lit 24/7 to represent prayers but I work outside the home so that was a no-go.

Not sure if you know your pic is still visible, but I’ll post a couple so they don’t get lonely.

I’m the the same way. I think it’s an inherited thing, too, as both my parents and most of my family have/had some version. I think my parents and grandparents started it for me, and my first one consisted of my angels and a pink candle. Now I have about three in my room, with certain things in other places. My angels and angels boxes that hold my rosaries (inherited) are by my bed, I have an altar for my family with some other objects on my desk, and the third one is on a small table in front of my window (that’s the one in the pic). Found objects, gifts from friends and family, lots of inherited things. All my angel/boxes, saints, and animal figurines were from my father and grandmother, except for the bears and owl you’ll see pictured, which are from my mom. Water in the blue bottle behind the owl, which has a braid I made of twine tied around it. Soil from my favorite sacred place. Candles, crystals, shells, and some other things. My burning things are mostly here. And my plants, of course.

Showing you the corner of my desk altar, as we have the same Buddha/Shakti statue:) I think the beads are sandalwood and carnelian. pic is flip flopped but you get the gist.

So awesome! Thank you. I didn’t know my pictures were available, oh well.  I love your clay bear. And thats pretty cool we have the same statue lol.

I also love that you honor your lineage, I think that’s really beautiful.

Haha! The way I wrote this makes it sound like I still have my first altar in my childhood bedroom lolol. That is not the case, just the beginning of the tradition and a very vivid memory. Anywhere I’ve lived since then, I naturally create the altar, and for some reason I usually end up with three, which is one of my favorite numbers (even when I was a child). Never plan it that way, but it sure feels right.

I generally don’t, but now I think I might. I like the focusing of energy in a spot like that. Thank you for posting 🙂

Love this topic heart. I totally relate to you describing the alter creation process as “subconscious”. I never once consciously thought that “this particular space, will be an alter”; it just evolved 🙂.

My alter developed on 2 shelves in the main living area. The top one began with a Buddha and 2 candles 🕯 either side of it. I received some rose quartz and pyramid shaped aventurine as a gift so I placed those up there and decided to add my own amethyst. On a birthday I received a ceramic lil elephant with a plant in its back. I read this means good luck in feng shui so it had to go “up there” as well. I got given a Buddha saying on a piece of wood which stands there as well. It’s funny how I realise as I’m writing this, the amount of stuff which was gifts.

On the shelf below is pictures of my deceased grandmothers and pets with small candles and flowers. I often say hello to them and ensure they are dusted regularly 🙂.

This space does provide a peaceful contemplation point. I cannot imagine my home without it. It feels like a physical manifestation of my soul.

Ohhh I forgot to mention that when I was at a market prior to lockdown I discovered a beautiful book titled “cat couture”. Of course I had to put this near Buddha 🙂

Its really cool that many of you say it just evolved!

I think there’s something encoded in us that needs to define a sacred space. I realized yesterday that its a practice that balances the masculine and feminine. Masculine- deliniation Feminine-sacred.

Another random thought I had about altars is that I think somehow they are all connected energetically and form a grid of that balanced energy across the Earth. Like theres small altars that add up to a large Earth sized one. I guess potentially making Earth the sacred place it’s meant to be? I don’t know, I just get the impression that there’s a greater purpose to the practice. Don’t Know if that makes sense!

I understand what you’re saying regarding this practice being encoded in us and perhaps serving a higher purpose that we may not be consciously aware of.

At first I was likening this process to instinctual and innate behaviours essential to survival such as nesting. Although to me, it feels this way, it isn’t, not physically anyway, because we can’t eat our alter..lol. So I come back to placing it in the spiritual/higher purpose needs box 🙂.

It’s so funny because as I was driving around taking mom to docs etc, I couldn’t stop wondering about this topic and wanting to find some time to do some research to understand this more.

It’s good to see you’ve already started..lol.Thanks for link, my gawd, this is so fascinating! Unfortunately I’ve got more tasks to do, but as soon as time permits I want to do further investigating 😄
