I think you can learn a lot about the signs by looking at them in their ruling planet pairs and seeing the similarities between them. Like how Taurus and Libra (the Venusian signs) are focused on pleasure, peace and beauty in their own earthy or airy way. Or Sagittarius and Pisces (the Jupitarian signs) who are focused on freedom, spirituality and inspiration in their respective fiery and watery forms. I think it’s easy to forget that Leo and Cancer are also paired up as the two luminary signs- one being the fiery, extroverted luminary, the other being the watery, introverted luminary. And like the other pairs they share a lot of similarities and core motivations that stem from their luminary rulership. I’ve bolded the primary traits:

Playful and highly affectionate. Both children at heart.
-Highly expressive (self-expressive Leo, emotionally expressive Cancer)
Luminous and unforgettable (Leo’s radiate and exude charisma. They dominate a room like a monarch or a rock star. Cancers shine with the subtlety and soulfulness of the moon- a beacon of solace on a dark night. They leave powerful emotional imprints on the hearts of those they meet, who are endeared to them like family. As a result both signs tend to stick in peoples memories)
Dramatic (Leo’s drama queen tendencies are very well documented. Nothing more needs to be said lol. Cancers can be highly emotionally dramatic- overreacting, acting out irrationally, and pulling everyone else into their tailspin.)
-Incredible actors (Most great actors have Leo or Cancer influence. Leo’s are born entertainers, they belong on the stage. They bring a style, a flair and an enthusiasm that is unmatched. Cancerian actors, being cardinal water, embody the emotions of their characters and make the audience feel every second of it. They make you weep. They are the most powerfully moving character performers.)
-Both crave attention and validation (Leo from the “crowd”, Cancer from loved ones)
-Both are internally fragile. (fragile ego Leo, fragile hearted Cancer- both signs have to deal with insecurity and can be exhausting to deal with)
Creative (Leo is bold and theatrical and plays with every colour in the box. What they create comes from the very essence of their being. Cancer is literally the sign of the womb and the birthing process- the rushing waters of life. What they create comes from their soul. The 4th and 5th House rule over family and children)
Loyalty (both signs are fiercely loyal and protective of those they care about- kingly Leo’s have their pride of Lions, and den mother Cancer rules over families/ tribes/ clans and packs)

Let me know what you think or if there are any other similarities you have noticed  smile

This may fall under “attention” but I find that the ones I know what to be pampered (not that others don’t). One of the men in my office is a Cancer Sun so I make sure I offer him food and tell him I made coffee. I give him candy when I have it etc.

You just made me a little choked up. I’m a Cancer Sun/Moon/Mercury in the 4th house and it feels nice to be understood, even in a description on the internet. ❤️

the leo part sounds like aries in a way 😀   child at heart.  Fire signs seem very child-like. I see Cancer more like “old soul”…the way Capricorn is. i like Tam’s description too, of being pampered. With food !! 😀

My husband doesn’t have cancer placements, so he’s not into the foodie as much. but he does say i’m a “Feeder” and that my power is feeding him LOL, one of the things i said to him is, I don’t control you that’s for sure, you do what you want. and he said, “yeah but you control me with FOOD” …  taurus trait? lol XDlaugh

Cancer is introverted, Leo is extroverted. 😀

Hospitality. Hosting is often given to Libra, but I think it belongs here. Leo generosity and life of the party, wants everyone to have a good time, too. Cancerian nourishment and love of the home, does too, and wants everyone who comes over to be comfortable, feel welcome and at ease.

The list you’ve made is excellent. It’s one of my favorite things to think about, and I think it’s easier to remember the relationship between the luminaries when we read the zodiac from beginning to end (but, of course, it’s a circle lol). When we do that, we see that the ruler of each sign is seated next to its natural planetary pair (aside from the outlier, Mercury, who could travel between worlds), in addition to being on the axis of its complimentary sign. Like this:

Aries (Mars), Taurus (Venus)

Gemini (Mercury, outlier)

Cancer (Moon), Leo (Sun)

Virgo (Mercury, outlier)

Libra (Venus), Scorpio (Mars)

Sagittarius (Jupiter), Capricorn (Saturn)

Aquarius (Saturn), Pisces (Jupiter)

The dimensions to astrology constantly trip me out.

How the old planetary rulerships were assigned to the Astrological Signs…they were designated according to the speeds of the visible planets from Earth’s view. Off the radiating Sun and reflective Moon, everything fits beautifully. Amazing to learn and understand all the ways how different astrological relationships fit each other in everything, Planets, Signs, Houses and Aspects. The astronomy is in the astrology and the astrology is in the astronomy. wink

Thank you, WinterMoon. I think I understand but would like to clarify.

So you said the planets were designated to the signs according to the speed of the visible planets from our perspective on Earth, starting from the Sun and the Moon. Like this:

    S–J–M–V–M–Moon, Sun–M–V–M–J–S

                                  Earth

That makes sense to me. Is that correct?

Sorry for not responding in a thread, I wanted to make sure the formatting didn’t disrupt the clarity of my question.

Yes that is correct. I use a blank chart with the Sun sigil in the 5th and Leo on the cusp with the 11 others drawn accordingly, it shows the old rulers of the natural chart signs starting with Aries on cusp 1, good visual to explain it to someone interested.

Perhaps I’m asking the wrong question or an arbitrary one, but does that mean Leo was essentially the first sign assigned a planet (Cancer, second, etc)?

It gets obvious the more we learn, the natural wheel which uses the tropical zodiac based on seasons, was the result of careful observations by many over long periods of time and when the natural wheel was drawn the assigned rulers of the astrological zodiac signs were all based on the visible planets’ speeds and cycles from long and careful observations of the actual planets. In the time of astrological zodiac sign Leo the Sun is in the heart of summer, Aries time is spring, Cancer summer, Libra autumn, Capricorn winter. The seasonal energies were observed, measured and assigned from nothern seasons but the core Astrological energy meanings apply to all Earth as the Sun and planets are in their same astrological zodiac signs at the same time for both hemispheres.

That I was familiar with, thank you for the refresher! I have many more questions but I think I’ve imposed enough on your knowledge. Thank you again 🙂
