The Astrology of Geography
Or, mundane astrology! My normally prominent 9th house is super activated by transit right now, and I’ve been digging into the cultures of different countries around the world.
I was looking into Ireland recently and after awhile knew that the country must have an emphasis in Aries. Many countries don’t have a precise date of unification, which is the case for Ireland. Their war for independence was in the late 19teens and early 20’s, but they officially left the commonwealth on April 17, 1949, and that’s the chart I found to be most referenced. In that chart, the country has Sun, Venus, Mars, NN, and IC in Aries which really came through in my research—direct, funny, warm, and so much of their culture is derived by their collective struggle for independence.
On another note, I’ve read about the Saturnian nature of Japan (possibly here on the boards), but the culture also seems Scorpionic, too. Subtlety is highly valued, as well as non verbal communication—seems very psychological, though nothing really stood out to me looking at the chart (so far).
There are some technical differences when using mundane astrology v. natal astrology, so I’ll include a link in case anyone wants a quick reference. But for this thread, feel free to be as technical or flexible as you’d like. Astrologically, what jumps out at you about other countries (or your own, wherever you are)?

Here’s a list of significations used in mundane astrology:
The Sun– Head of state.
The Moon– The people, public opinion.
Mercury– Communication and transportation. Younger people and teachers.
Venus– Arts, entertainment, younger women, glamour, financial spending.
Mars– War, military, police, militants, conflict.
Jupiter– Clergy, high courts, brings favor wherever it falls in the chart if well aspected.
Saturn– The elderly, mines, conservatism. Reduces advantage of the house it falls in.
Uranus- Technology, outer space programs, unruly events, wild changes in weather.
Neptune– Socialism and programs related to the well being of the less advantaged. Drug companies and drug problems in the population.
Pluto– Nuclear power, upheaval of governments, terrorism, lone terrorist attacks, mafia and drug lords.
First House _ The country and its citizens. Will represent the image and characteristics of the country and people.
Second House– Money, as in personal charts. Economy and ability to purchase.
Third House– Transportation and communications.
Fourth House– Housing, real estate, and living conditions.
Fifth House– Children, entertainment, lotteries, and gambling.
Sixth House– The workers of the country, labor, public health, medical services.
Seventh House– Foreign relations, war and peace, agreements, open enemies.
Eight House– National debt, mortality rates, insurance and social security.
Ninth House– Foreigners, universities, religious organizations, legal systems.
Tenth House– Corresponds to the ruler of the country, president, prime minister, the government and the leadership of the country.
Eleventh House– Allies of the country, institutions of the government such as local governments, senates, and other legislative bodies.
Twelfth House– Prisons, hospitals, spies, secret enemies, crime and criminals.
That is fascinating about Ireland. They are called the Fighting Irish and that explains the reason with all that Aries.
I think of America having Pluto in Capricorn the sign of governments and Pluto being the planet of power and control. We are well known for our secret government that tries to control the world.
