What Do You Fear?

lion roaringEveryone has fear. Everyone has that one slinking, insidious thing that stalks the darkest corners of their mind. The beauty of Halloween, and of horror in general, it that is allows us to engage with symbolic representations of that fear, to explore and experiment in a low-stakes environment as we attempt to grapple with what goes bump in the night.

In the natal chart, Saturn rules fear. Taking a look at Saturn will give us a sense of what our deepest fears are, and in turn, what kind of horror gives us the spine-tingling chills. For example, I have Saturn in Sagittarius in the 8th house.  I am most terrified by creeping, slow-burn psychological horror that leaves the world looking just a little less controllable long after the last page or scene. I’m also horrified by stories that involve being surrounded by people who are all insane, sharing the same delusion. Hand me a Shirley Jackson novel and I’m toast. This ties in to my real-life fear, which is of the darkness that exists and can be activated in each and every one of us. In my personal horror story, every human is just a few bad circumstances away from madness.

Or take my partner, who has Saturn conjunct the Moon in Cancer. The horror that gets to him the most are traditional haunted house stories. The feeling that your very home, the place where you are supposed to be the safest, turns against you. And there is nothing you can do to defend yourself or your family. This can be tied to his real-life childhood in which familial chaos almost beyond imagination was an everyday occurrence, as well as his deep desire to be a protective figure for his family as an adult.

When we consume our scary tales, what we are really doing is confronting our own psyche. We are examining the fear, holding it up to the light, and trying to come to terms with its power. We find the little cracks, the small absurdities that exist within it, and we come away a little stronger and a little more in control. So this Halloween, as you are enjoying the shivers down your spine, take a moment to look into your fear, and let your fear stare back into you. Isn’t it delicious?

What kind of horror gets to you? Can you tie it to your real-life fear? Where is your Saturn?

  1. Saturn retrograde in 11th house libra… I was always scared of possession horror movies like the exorcist. I cannot watch those kinds of movies at all. Too scary!

  2. Saturn in the fourth. I deeply value a safe n’ stable home life. The thought of being uprooted or placed in a dangerous, out of control environment terrifies me.

  3. People who have no impulse control. I mean we all got a dark side, but some got no filter. I steer clear. 1st house Saturn in Scorpio.

  4. Betrayal, ghosting, dominance and disrespect/disregard for my feelings by my closest people, especially partner. Saturn 7th scorpio opp mars. They haunt me i haunt them. Forever. Go figure why ive actually come to appreciate it once i finally see it from a distance…

  5. Saturn/MC/Juno in the 11th or 10th depending on what house system.. being insignificant, never amounting to anything, being incapable of loving my family, being a sociopath/autistic person, old people.. this doesn’t show up in the chart or maybe it does I don’t know. The fear of insignificance made it hard to enjoy nature til recently. I was raised with depressing Oscar movies I find scary.. my family tends to find horror movies beneath us. I only saw silence of the lambs so far. It’s childish to fear whatever I fear. It’s even childish to fear success or failure (Mars in the 12th).. but I see so many people whine when they get it that it didn’t make them happy and now they feel empty.. but also sitting here and not trying for success is making me feel useless and undeveloped as a character. I think trying for success is worth something and does build your self esteem even if according to Buddhist principles it doesn’t amount to anything. Trying for something difficult feels more satisfying. I say that as I avoid something basic.

  6. I was also always afraid of thinking about the future which checks out because I have Saturn in sag. I’m also very slow to figure out what my passions are. Others seem not to be that slow. I am terrified of everything and have been dissuaded of things since childhood by my family. Who watched me do nothing and gave up hope and pushed me toward safe shit. No.

    1. Oh jana 🙁 same
But do you fear your own individuality/independence? I know a lot of people responding to this placement by keeping to the status quo when they really want to break away especially professionally.. not wanting bosses or conventional marriages.. but they seem slow to act on their freedom needs

  7. Saturn in the First in Sag. I just fear being out of my comfort zone-teaching for that far off goal, fearing failure. But as far as spooky stuff, I love psychological horror and ghost stories-but then I fear attracting spirits. I have had some paranormal experiences but never felt scared in the midst-just curious. It’s later I think about them and get kinda freaked out.

  8. Saturn in Cap in the 10th. Bones and teeth are creepy with breaks and bites, I hate vampires! Zombies too. Hydrogen bombs and flesh eating organisms. Autopsies and tortured surgeries. The house placement probably means fear of corporate or government control of workers. Human robots/slaves for the elite.

  9. My Sag Saturn is exactly conjunct my 10H/11H. My inner Sag centaur (and Aqua ASC) hated saluting the “corporate flag” and being a member of a traditional church.

On a shallow not really serious level, I have become more aware of something I have always been a bit afraid of that is female vampires.

I see some women have a desire to cause damage to feel their own power, this sometimes manifests in girls that make a big deal of things and complain and get whatever authority is available involved for their own attention.

And a lot of internal more negative impulses that they can’t manifest because of small weak fists, imagine if an attractive woman, a being already with a lot of power, had the ability to simply take someones blood straight from their neck. But outside that theory, there is just a feeling to them. Like even when I’m watching a film with a vampire in it I’m like… Did I need to see that female vampire eat someone?

    Saturn in 8th house Sagittarius.
