Tribute To Astrologer, David Roell By Frederick Woodruff

zodiac lighter vintageAstrologer, David Roell died last year. I contacted him, ten years ago with what I thought was a favor. He replied to explain I was impossibly stupid and not at all to his liking.

Later, he linked my site from his. I was surprised and grateful!

Astrologer and gifted writer Frederick Woodruff has written a wonderful, in depth, personal tribute to the talented and controversial, David Roell.

Please pop over and read about this authentically interesting man – David Roell: Mercury’s Maven and Maverick

  1. I miss David Roell. He was knowledgeable and acerbic. I still refer to his weekly blogs, which I saved.

  2. David Roell was a trip! He lived right here in Maryland, and I went over to his house once. He was very encouraging to young female astrologers, SMILE. Told me he couldn’t make heads or tails of Vedic astrology, and asked how did I find anything useful in it? Talked with him a bit more, and it turned out he knew a little Jyotish after all. WINK

  3. Fascinating read. I’ll have to investigate further and read Roell’s books. I love how he claimed to have Goethe’s chart on steroids. 🙂

  4. Man… I didn’t realize who this was until recently. I love his site (astroamerica.com) for all the book reviews; most of my astrology books I cross-checked with his reviews before buying. I also received his newsletter for a while, and it was always extremely insightful, and honestly it helped me see what astrology is truly capable of revealing, if you know what you’re doing.

    1. I didn’t realise who he was not that he was behind Astroamerica till now.

I decided on countless occasions to buy books based on some of his comments. Got into Blaschke thanks to him.

Rest in peace…an original, daring and controversial at times thinker.

  5. wow, i didn’t know he died. went to his shop in the garment district in nyc back in the day…

    fascinating read.

  6. I also wondered why everyone seemed to know who he was and I didn’t, considering I was active in the astrological community since the mid-70s. But now that I know he ran the astroamerica.com site, it all rings a bell. I never knew his last name! I only had contact with him once and it was about some book that I was looking for that was out of print. He was very nice and that’s all I remember. When I get a chance, I’ll read Frederick’s article.

  7. “throat-based craft”…hysterical…seriously, this made my day! Very fun reading…I so enjoy hearing the astrologer’s story and I have one too and yes, my Jupiter is in Aries in the 9th which trines Mercury in Leo in the 12th which opposes Saturn in Aqua in the 6th and round and round. Thank you so much for sharing, Elsa!

The thanks so much for the David Roell article. I looked forward to reading his material every Monday. I had some correspondence with him about William Lilly and other things which I lost when my computer crashed (wish I had copied it). He was a brilliant, cranky iconoclast and I was saddened by his death. I still go there at least once a month to read Deb Houlding’s(sp?) blog as well as other British astrologers.
