Should You Marry With Mercury Retrograde

wedding-cake.jpgDear Elsa,

I’m trying to plan an informal wedding for this year and the two months we’re looking at are June and October. I’ve looked at the calendar and it looks like Mercury will be all wonky all through both of those months. My question is simply, is it insanity to try to plan for a wedding during a Merc retro period? Are we begging for the cake to go missing, the minister to be hijacked, and all the guests to get lost? Should we consider a different month or go ahead as planned and keep a sense of humor about whatever happens?

Engaged

Dear Engaged, this is absolutely not my area of expertise so you should take what I say with a grain of salt. I am posting this as an open question so others might chime in… but since you asked me, I would never ever get married with Mercury retrograde. ::smiles::

That said, it sounds as if you are drawn to and even may relish the upside-down-ness of it all, so whose is to say?

Further you are talking to someone who got married on April Fool’s Day and yes… that marriage was a joke so it seems to me it is all in how you approach the idea of your marriage. If you are looking for something solemn – well Mercury wonky sounds all wrong to me. But not everyone wants something solemn.

Anyone else?

  1. I’ll be interested to see opinions on this as I’m looking at October 26th as a possible date. The moon and Merc will both be in Libra which seem nice.

  2. I wouldn’t marry during mercury retrograde because legally marriage is a contract and I wouldn’t sign a contract at that time.

  3. to me, it depends. was the union a long time coming, a formalization and completion of some sort? have you or will you have been living together already? is it a first marraige?

in other words, if it was like “finishing” something i’d already started or began long ago, then fine (and triple-check details). also, if you find a detail, question, or issue just “pops” into your head, look at it again. this is my version of merc rx insurance.

i’m no astrologer, by the way. just a chick with a lot of merc in my chart. good luck on the union!

  4. I got married in 1996 with Mercury forward but making close squares to Saturn and Chiron; Saturn and Chiron were in opposition, this was a tough T-Square marriage.

I signed the divorce contract with Mercury retrograde. That worried me because I thought what harm can Mercury do here, I want out and I am getting out, and I know I am not getting back together with him.

What happened was, 5 years later due to reasons that flared up out of the dust, that divorce contract went into re-negotiation from the financial and custody points of view.

I read AFTER I got married never to get married under a Saturn Chiron opposition. The next Saturn Chiron opposition happens exact in 2067, so there is clear sailing here for us on that aspect.

If I get married again, I will pick a waxxing moon, maybe one in Taurus. I’ll pick the time so that the next aspect to the moon is a positive one, a trine to Venus would be nice. I would avoid Mercury retrograde, because at that point why bother looking at the astrology, if I know I’ll get married anytime anyway.

  5. bigskyastrology.com is a good place to go to find out about this stuff.

As someone who was born under Mercury retrograde, it probably wouldn’t bother me to marry under it because that’s how my life naturally goes anyway. (When everyone else’s computer shorts out, nothing happens to me. Hah!) But if you are not used to that in your life, perhaps not.

    Okay, probably definitely not.

  6. Hmmm, as satori says, legal marriage is a contract. So the ceremony itself can happen whenever, but the signing of the license- that should not be done under merc. retro. IMO

  7. Under mercury retrograde, I would not only worry about the wedding itself, but also about the marriage. I belive that the marriage date/time and location is Extremely important.

this would be especially true if the numbers tie in to one or both of the charts. Travelling with Merc. retro conj. my ascendent, for example, proved to be so entirely foolhardy that I will never again ignore the potential ramifications of Mercury retrograde situations.

    good luck!

  8. You could try having the wedding at the scheduled time, but signing the marriage contract(s?) well before/after the retrograde period.

  9. nah, I wouldn’t on a retrograde; unless that is it was to someone I was married to previously, you know a second time around affair.

Not everyone can get married outside the retro periods. Thousands get married all over the world during retro’s. I would like to see the statistics of those marriages versus non Merc retro marriages. You know, how the day went and whether or not 5 years after they are still married.

I still wouldn’t get married on a retro merc.

  10. Marriage is a lifetime, a wedding is a day. In my mind, you’ve already started the marriage process in getting engaged (promise of marriage) — the wedding day itself is a single event. I would be more concerned with planning the wedding under merc retro (when you’re expecting all the agreements to come into play) than to worry about the finished product (the lifetime of marriage after the day) but I recognize that i’m likely in the minority. I’ve also had two sangrias tonight and can’t communicate my thoughts to save my ass, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt (and maybe a lime and some tequila).

  11. I see that Mercury was retrograde when I got married for the first time. That marriage went down in flames about 2 years later. But also, on that day, I had transiting Neptune in Cap in my 7th house of marriage square my natal Aries Saturn in my 10th house of direction in life. This square was in effect basically the entire time we were together.

  12. Great points folks, thanks!

More info… I was born with Merc stationary. I wouldn’t have thought to look it up until Jennifer mentioned it.

This will be more of a finishing touch kind of thing than a beginning for us. We live together, our daughter is seven months old right now…

I’m also not terribly concerned about the potential impact on the marriage itself. I think it will take a lot more than marrying during a retro phase to jack this up… My concern is for the day itself as I would really rather not have a three-ring circus on my wedding day. I have Capricorn. I’m a control freak. I would be out of my mind with anxiety attacks. lol

But then again… I was born on freaking April Fool’s Day. So maybe I should loosen up and enjoy the potential carnival… ?

  13. I’m getting married in a month+…during a merc rx on June 1st…and again on June 4th. We are doing one with family and one for just the two of us doing a vow exchange. Hopefully the latter will take place on a beach somewhere, but anywhere is fine with me so long as we are together. We wanted to elope but our families were not keen on the idea…

I was horrified at the idea of merc rx for our wedding day as I had been reading about it for the last year or so. Pretty much since we have been talking about marriage. But he picked the date (which has sentimental value) and encouraged the idea of the two events for us. I think it fits and we both have natal merc rx…I suppose we will see what happens.

I am trying not to think about it and put my energy into loving us and hoping for the best.

  14. I hope so! 🙂

All of these astrologers are making me nervous…but I am hopeful. That’s what you can be right? If it’s meant to be forever, then it will.

  15. zen-under those circumstances, i wouldn’t worry about it much…i would make special point during the day to acknowledge (even internally) the historical part of it, and how it’s “finishing” the previous stage of your partnership in honor of the merc retro, and enjoy the rest of the day.

  17. Got married during merc rx on 06/01/08 and the only problem was I got there 5 minutes late, got dressed and ran downstairs and had the most PERFECT day ever! We are far from perfect ourselves but I am hopeful it will work out however is best. I am now trying to get prego so hope the merc rx is not a detriment…but again we both have natal merc rx.
