The Mind And Communication: Mercury Trumps Pluto? Yer Crazy, Elsa P!

I was talking to satori and she reminded me of this old post. The comments are amusing. I was right about this. I would not have made the claim if I couldn’t back it up!

I think this is such an important topic and rarely (if ever) discussed in life or in astrology.

/ˈnoʊʃən/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [noh-shuhn] Show IPA Pronunciation
1. a general understanding; vague or imperfect conception or idea of something: a notion of how something should be done.
2. an opinion, view, or belief: That’s his notion, not mine.
3. conception or idea: his notion of democracy.
4. a fanciful or foolish idea; whim: She had a notion to swim in the winter.
5. an ingenious article, device, or contrivance; knickknack.

Mercury which rules the mind is given far less weight in astrology then it deserves. There are exceptions to this. Most notably Lois Rodden wrote a book: Mercury Method of Chart Comparison. She explained how important Mercury was when comparing charts to judge compatibility. Basically if there can be no meeting of the minds, the relationship is going to fail over time.

Common sense tells you this is correct. It ought to tell you this planet and its functions are in fact undervalued because you never hear this kind of thing. Virgos and Geminis? Who needs ’em? Mercury? Who needs Mercury when we’ve got Pluto to focus on?

Well I mean to show you that Mercury can readily take out Pluto. Who believes me?

  1. Thank you for bringing this topic up. It made me look at my synastry with my guy. My mercury is square his venus. Does it mean I’m the one who is to blame everytime we have a communication problem?

  2. Humm…something about this smacks of truth. I have Mercury sq Saturn with this guy. I am dying to get into his undies but we can’t talk…literally. We can both charm the pants off of everyone else except each other. Trying to just start a conversation with him is painful I don’t even bother anymore. I just lust in silence. I think this bothersome square trumps everything else that we have going for us. Ugh.

  3. Me- Virgo Rising, Scorpio Moon… Him- Gemini Rising, Virgo moon… Both of us- Mercury and Venus in Scorpio.
We fell in love in a coffee shop over a strategy game. I made a few moves that really blew his mind.
There is a scene in the film Human Nature where Rosie Perez’ character says “you F&^# the mind, you F*#@ the mind.” I love that quote.

  4. I’m all kinds of Mercury! Can’t wait to hear this.

If Mercury can take out Pluto, and you have Mercury-Pluto, does that mean you’re unstoppable? Or they cancel each other out? (I’m kidding.)

  5. Well I mean to show you that Mercury can readily take out Pluto. Who believes me?

I do. But I think any of the seven can take out Pluto at any time.

    [‘And Uranus and Neptune sometimes.’]

  6. I think Mercury is important, especially for communications in a relationship. My husband and I have conjunct natal Mercuries in the last degrees of Sagittarius. — When Pluto was retrograde between our natal Mercuries, we were having 4th generation discussions on what the other one said. It was the worst we’d ever been at understanding each other. Then I remembered transisting Pluto and let it blow over.

I guess that didn’t help prove your point. Unless, we consider my mind (Mercury) worked on the cause of the problem. We both have natal Mercury trine natal Pluto.

As for notions, my Mom commented that both Dad and my brother had problems with getting notions in their heads that weren’t right that no one could talk them out of. I commented that my daughter was the same, and by the way, they are all three Aquarians. I just checked their three natal charts. All three of them have Aquarian Mercuries (Fixed opinions!) to go with their Aquarian suns. Dad and brother have them conjunct.

    Interesting subject. Thanks.

  7. Mercury take out Pluto? Don’t make me laugh.

Anyway, I always consider Mercury in compatibility b4 Pluto because it’s a personal planet, and I tend to study all personal planets first.

However, I don’t like comparing. U need both: Mercury is conscious, deliberate thought while Pluto is subconscious impulse and intuition. They complete each other.

A partner needs to vibe with u on both levels — more so on that hidden subconscious level because that’s where the magic and chemistry are.

  8. mercury is far mroe slippery than pluto gives him credit for. speed is a darn good defense against a precision weapon… as long as you can see it coming.

or, to say, i can out-think your manipulations.
with enough practice, anyway. it gets easier.

uh, but i have a mercury (chart ruler) in taurus opposing a uranus in scorpio so i look at all of this from quite a slant 😉

  9. There is no question in my mind, after years of study and research, Mercury is critical. I think that the two (1 planet, 1 luminary) which are critical CRITICAL to reasonably intact mental health, not to mention smarts as well, are Mercury and the MOON.

Mercury and the moon are the planets of the ‘mind’ which goes both to happiness, mental stability, brains (right thinking versus insane/crazy thinking) and since one of my areas of expertise is mental health, I love these two planets. I first learned about the total importance of Mercury when I first took up reading James Braha, but it has just moved and developed from there over the last 6 years or so.

Hey Wyrd, I have Merc in Taur opposition also…my case it opposes Saturn in Scorp, Merc (2nd) with sun, and Saturn in 8th.

  10. Haha yes, I think so, too!

And I find this funny. I had a crazy time with a guy whose Pluto was conjunct my Mercury. Talking with me transformed him/healed him? Sounds plausible.

  11. My BFF and I have Mercury conj in Taurus. My Sun also conj. his Mercury. I knew him from the moment we met. We are worlds apart in many beliefs, but kindred spirits. I don’t know how we’d work as lovers, but as friends who love each other, we’re the best.
I also tried dating a guy whose Mercury was sq. my Merc and Sun and conj. my Saturn and Pluto. We just couldn’t talk even though we liked each other and had a lot in common. It just never felt easy.

  12. Mercury is essential in synastry. I can’t stand guys who have their Mercury in Virgo squaring my Sun and Uranus. Mercury sq. Mercury sucks too. Then if my Venus trines or conjuncts a guy’s Mercury, I love their voice and love to listen to them and talk with them. Essential. This is coming from someone with a packed 3rd house so I’m biased.

About Mercury kicking Pluto’s butt, I suppose it’s entirely possible. Personally I have Mercury aspecting Pluto, Mercury in 3rd and Pluto in 1st, all I can say is power of mind and thoughts makes all the difference in one’s life. Mercury is indeed CRITICAL for one’s sanity.

  13. The pen is mightier than the sword. I have pluto trine mercury in Sag on my MC. My blurts can cut like a knife. I have to watch it.
The urban dictionary says it well:
“The pen is mightier than the sword” means a person can cause people to change their opinions(e.g., to fight a war)and on a large scale whereas a sword can only change a peron’s opion by force and then often only results in the person’s death.

  14. I have many planets in gemini including my sun sign, chiron and part of fortune. Therefore I love everything about Mercury! Six in fact! Bring it on sista! lol.

Well I think there are people who know my intellectual powers and prowess and those who overlook it bc they lack their own. I have been told I can do anything I set my mind to.. And this is true. It was pretty ridiculous someone said I should be the next president they were totally trying to inflate my head or tease, seriously who wants that job?! The problem is I liked so many darn things at once that I couldn’t figure it out until recently and things are starting to get better this year. As a gemini it is very healthy to engage your mind not only your heart. One needs balance. I would have to say though that I think Virgo’s are much more capable of getting things done than Gemini’s. And you know I don’t know why? Its not that I don’t get things done oh I have about 12 stickies to do a week! But, its they do it better and more efficiently.

If you look at it this way Hermes in Greek Mythology could see and know all by traveling around and gathering information and dispensing it to whom he pleases. And knowledge is power as they say.

Lastly, I think the most important planet is Mars believe it or not. Cause that is where you act. If it is afflicted your pretty much in trouble, and if it looks good you got good things going for you. Oohh how I wish I had Mars trine Venus or Venus trine Mars then all my musical projects would come and be completed in a day!

I can go on really. But anyhow I wondered what it would be like to have Mercury in Pisces but I have mine in Gemini. And in regards to communication and partnerships of course it is, I love speaking with Leo personalities the most because they most appeal to childlike qualities that I fancy 😉

  15. I am Mercury ruled with Virgo and Gemini all over the damned place in my chart and I do believe that Mercury can and will beat Pluto’s ass!! Bring it on Pluto. Mercury pulls me through when all else fails, I would be NO WHERE without my mind.

  16. YES!

I have 3 planets in Scorpio, Mercury included and it’s conjunct Pluto. But I am mercurial all the way.

The way your mind works is indeed a powerful thing. Somebody can plant an idea, good or bad, in your head and everything changes. The way you see things changes.

  17. I’ve got both Pluto and Mercury in their ruling sign. Pluto in trine with Uranus and Neptune, Mercury opposing Saturn and conjunct Chiron.

I guess Virgo and Scorpio could be the two prominent signs in my chart, with 4 planets in them in total, including the Sun, plus Chiron and the North Node.

(Off topic: I also don’t know if I’m more influenced by Libra (where I have Venus) or by Taurus (my rising), both being related.)
