Mars Conjunct Pluto In Capricorn – DDOS Attack

ddos-attackWe’re all aware of Friday’s DDOS attack. There’s a discussion here. This is a great example of Mars conjunct Pluto in Capricorn.

Pluto is concerned with the use of other people’s energy or resources.
Mars attacks and Capricorn rules business.
Businesses were attacked,  but it might also be someone’s business to attack.

Capricorn rules government as well.  It’s possible the attack (Mars) was State sponsored (Capricorn). Reality (Capricorn) is hidden (Pluto).

I wonder also, if this was a controlled (Capricorn) show of force (Mars), intended to intimidate (Capricorn) and manipulate as opposed to an all out war.

What do you think?

  1. I see it as a “look what I can do”, State sponsored or not. I think we as citizens should see it as very valuable information. No one died but money was lost or delayed because of it. I am checking my end to make sure that all of my passwords are mine and others should as well. Check all devices that you own that are attached to the Internet and make sure that you are not using the manufacturers password.

  2. THIS ~~~~~~ I wonder also, if this was a controlled (Capricorn) show of force (Mars), intended to intimidate (Capricorn) and manipulate as opposed to an all out war

  3. I thought it was a controlled show of force, intended to intimidate and manipulate as opposed to an all out war the minute I knew it happened.

  4. I agree with Soup! I think some entity is teasing us with what they can do — It’s a warning. The tech community has long known that the Internet of Things was going to be a big problem, where the gas and power companies are tied to the Internet with not nearly enough security, hack-able concerns that could result in entire cities being blacked out, etc. I think this is just the tip of the iceberg (2020, here we come in the USA?).

This said, it’s an important warning for us to get our collective shits together, tech-wise…

  5. This aspecting perfectly describes the released Wikileaks e-mails from the Clinton Foundation and presidential campaign. In fact, this topic is the front page featured article in today’s edition of USA Today newspaper.

  6. Pluto is concerned with the use of other people’s energy or resources.

Is it? Never thought of it that way.

Mars attacks and Capricorn rules business. Businesses were attacked, but it might also be someone’s business to attack.

    Yeah.

Of some state. Or element of some state.

I was initially thinking dry run and have since changed my mind. This was an attack on one provider. But they stopped and restarted three times. And of course, the malware used is basically open source at this point. Not a dry run, too loud and obvious. Wikileaks suggested it was supporters getting cranky but that doesn’t explain why Dyn. (Why not Akamai or somebody like that? If they can queue a big enough botgun…) Weirder, it disrupted traffic all day long on a Friday. Not the optimal day if intended for disruption. Hard enough to annoy, not hard enough to hurt.

No reason to run it during business hours and then shut it down. (Although it will mean something if they start up again Monday morning.)

And nation-states typically don’t risk/waste/lose an advantage by releasing their malware as public source. From a certain perspective, handing out rocket launchers to 8th-graders and telling them the one that makes the neatest boom gets a prize, would induce some chaos… but chaos is chaos, it isn’t coordinated for maximum damage.

Now if you thought perhaps IoT was a big risk, maybe you create some proof-of-concept unsophisticated malware and release it to get the powers-that-be’s attention. (Think of the October 2001 anthrax attack.) There was some suggestion that the possible suspects intended it as a warning of the potential dangers.

There’s also al-Qeada and Daesh, but I hear no claims of credit.

There are of course, various malware-friendly types who might do it for the lulz, companies that think they might gain, people holding interesting positions in Dyn stock looking for an advantage, and possibly someone with a grudge against Dyn. Or someone that wants it knocked out as a possible M&A target.

As for the Russians, it doesn’t strike me as their style – they might save up such an attack for maximum inconvenience (election day, basically), but I’m not sure they’d do it at all. (Of course, it’s possible they wrote the malware and then let it into the wild. That would leave no fingerprints. But they have tended to run up to the edge of the line, not actually go over it. Disrupting a Friday work day is not a critical interest of Russia, unlike the Crimea.) It’s pretty definitely not the style of the Chinese.

    Dyn says:

    What We Know
At this point we know this was a sophisticated, highly distributed attack involving 10s of millions of IP addresses. We are conducting a thorough root cause and forensic analysis, and will report what we know in a responsible fashion. The nature and source of the attack is under investigation, but it was a sophisticated attack across multiple attack vectors and internet locations. We can confirm, with the help of analysis from Flashpoint and Akamai, that one source of the traffic for the attacks were devices infected by the Mirai botnet. We observed 10s of millions of discrete IP addresses associated with the Mirai botnet that were part of the attack.

So based on the evidence to hand, we have got … nothing. Unknown malware author wrote a simple piece of code, and it was used by a fairly sophisticated but very large botnet, controlled by…somebody. Might have been as little as a single person controlling the bot.

Very little direct evidence, very little of the way of indirect evidence, basically nothing can be inferred from the target choice, excepting maybe someone has it in for Dyn. Unless they were just wrong DNS provider at the wrong time.

  7. Capricorn is a ruller of programming. Programming is very scrupulous and accurate job. So you discourse on a right way. And there has been hackers attack already. But now Mars is going away from Pluto.

  8. “I wonder also, if this was a controlled (Capricorn) show of force (Mars), intended to intimidate (Capricorn) and manipulate as opposed to an all out war.”

    oh yes.
This is very spot on for my own personal life. My ex decided the day of the exact conjunction to remove me as a friend on Facebook.

He has Mars in Libra, 5th house Rx natally and Saturn and Pluto here as well. Pluto is transitting his 8th house. He is an expert at passive aggressiveness and a very clever manipulator… I’m pretty sure he did it to make a statement and hurt me. Truth is – yes he hurt me deeply – but I think it was the best thing that could happen. The war is over.
