Developing Agoraphobia In A Pandemic

cancer crab paintingCancer is the sign most commonly associated with agoraphobia. This disabling condition prevents a person from leaving their home due to fear.  Cancer the crab, rules the home and known to retreat into their hard shell

The 2020 Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto conjunction in Capricorn saw people locked in their homes all over the world. I contend, this was a traumatic event. Human beings react to trauma!

During this period, I wrote a lot of posts, picturing mountain goats on ledges. The planets in the stellium in Capricorn were retrograde at the time. I felt we pretty much stuck in place, but eventually the time would pass and we’d move off our ledge.

This time has passed but many people are struggling to move off their ledge. I compared this to being like Hans Solo, stuck in carbonite.

As more days and weeks and months pass, I’m realizing a significant number of people are developing some degree or form of agoraphobia, as well as depression. Both challenges are tied to Saturn and Capricorn.

goat on a ledgePluto remains in Capricorn. Pluto is concerned with psychology and death as well as transformation. You might say that fear is a killer but this combination also denotes a degree of fortitude that is out of this world.  If you’re having a problem, this is what you can tap into to find the strength to face your fears.

I realize there are a certain percentage of people who really prefer to be at home.
I also think the lopsided sky has some play here.  This is quite serious, I hope you’ll check the link below.

But I am becoming more and more concerned, if people don’t face their fear now, they are going to become permanently disabled.  Here’s the upshot…

You might have thought you were going to die but chances are you are not going to die. The longer you wait to get back to life, the harder it will be to get back at all. We have all had our teeth kicked down our throat. It does not have to be a death blow.

Just consider this: you may live for decades! I have an example!

My Scorpio friend’s mother-in-law lived with her and her husband for fifteen years, dying when she was 100 years old. Her husband died and left her very well off.  But no one expected her to outlive him, thirty years!

Do you want to live on a ledge for the rest of your life? You’ve got to move and face your fear.

  1. I can.
I had this anxiety last year and I got into treatment.
In our group there was a girl who would get anxiety attacks if she had to be home alone or go somewhere alone. That’s pretty harsh. She stayed with her grand parents.

I think this conjunction had people’s pathology roaring up in the pandemic. You couldn’t hide it with surface stuff anymore, and the blow has been huge on us.

I have been at home since January 2020. I vibe with the sentence about getting up and out, facing the fears. I feel it too. I am not afraid of going out anymore, but it will be a strange new world. Anyhow, life WILL go on. In another fashion, but on to the next ledge for sure!

  2. I didn’t get clinically diagnosed with it, but I went agoraphobic right after having to start working from home. I live alone, I didn’t *have* to go out much and I learned very quickly to be afraid of all other people.

Now that I am fully vaccinated, I am trying to go outside more often, I’ve eaten in a few restaurants and I’ve seen other fully vaccinated people. I don’t know if I’m going to declare myself “over it” yet though. I ended up not leaving the house again this weekend (mostly just tired and it was insanely windy out) and at this point it feels comfortable to just not leave, as well. I hope sometime everything can go back to normal. I at least have less worry about my own safety going out now, which really helps.

      Appreciate this message, jenfullmoon!

I think it’s because for so much of last year (in the US), our fear was based on something I’ve witnessed to be real. Nothing was controlled, no one knew who was sick or spreading it, hospitals were filling—then filled—and nurses were breaking mentally, and there was no vaccine available. To protect high-risk people in my family (we have healthcare workers in our fam), we had to be “different” and so I HAD to listen to the survival part of my brain. So we’re still here. It wasn’t a bad thing to be agoraphobic.

Now that things have shifted a bit. It’s like… gotta recalibrate a bit! 🙂 Rational brain has to re-kick in to be like, let’s hold onto the things that worked, check to see if things are alright. And it probably is on many levels. Looking at the weather report, inspecting for jellyfish & dipping my toe in…. *fingerscrossed*

So I feel your comment. Definitely.

  3. My adult son has a Cancer stellium (Pallas Athene, Venus, Chiron, Jupiter) in his 4H. He loves being in and working from his home. He is dreading the prospect of returning to his workplace. As a child, he was always holed up in his bedroom. He is not depressed, he just enjoys his quiet time with his wife.

  4. Cancer moon and ascendant. Its my dream come true to stay home as much as possible. I hate going out. I finaly feel rested and my head is finaly clear. I might even start writing books or doing an art project.

  5. I have noticed a definite shift in my ability to deal with crowds since this started. While they’ve always made me nervous, they are now making me confused! I don’t know how to navigate them anymore.

Part of it could also be due to the nature of the work I do. Home care can be very isolating. During the pandemic, it was much more so, for my clients especially. One of the agencies I work for locked its front door and I would just exchange paperwork, gloves, etc. at the door to avoid a temperature check and screening. I actually prefer that because now I absolutely cannot stand to go into the office unless I have to. With all the driving I do for work, I think I’ve taken on the personality of a truck driver, lol.

  6. Yes think teenage grandson too complacent with his little cottage ( rent free) winter has left there is a bitter spring at hand ; hoping a bug will get in his bloodstream to get
Him on the money train. But what to do, we shifted nicely for safety
And that we have become ,safe at
    Home?

  7. hi elsa
you pointed out quite correctly that people are scared of the pandemic and, of course, death. but it could lead to agoraphobia? I didn’t know that. anyways, I don’t know about others, but i know for a fact that i’m going to live much longer.
    thanks for the blog!

    1. Sure, if you’re afraid to leave the house and be around other people because you might catch the disease from them. I definitely heard stories of people catching it because they absolutely had to have a repair person come into their home and that person was infected, going to the grocery store, etc.
