Astrology Makes You Whole!

wholeI’ve recently been reading a lot about Internal Family Systems therapy, also known as parts work. The idea is that each of us have multiple sub-personalities, or pieces of ourselves. When they are in conflict, suppressed, or otherwise weakened, we often experience distress, depression, health issues, etc. But when the parts are integrated, we become stronger and more able to function in the world and achieve our goals. This is an evidence-based modality that has been proven to treat a number of physical and mental issues.

To me, there is a direct line between that and what I do as an astrologer. When I look at a chart, what I am seeing is essentially a blueprint of all of someone’s sub-personalities and how they interact. I can see what planets offer protection or escape or tension. I can see which parts are placed into exile and which are welcomed with open arms. It’s a map of the psyche.

The goal in parts work is the same as with astrology. It is my job to analyze all the disparate parts and find a way to bring them together into a cohesive whole. It’s to help people own all of who they are and to put all the parts to good use. In both systems, parts that appear to be liabilities can become enormous assets. When everything comes together, people function like never before. It’s amazing to see a psychological modality confirm what astrology has always told us!

When we acknowledge all of who we are, we can use all the parts of ourselves to become healthy. The engine within us revs op. And when we’re firing on all cylinders, we have the power to achieve our dreams and live the life we’re meant to live. In that way, astrology makes us whole.

  1. This is a cool way to think about astrology— thanks, Midara! Sounds similar in a lot of ways to that method of drawing up ‘persona’ charts for each of the planets (I haven’t experimented too much with it myself, though).

Question for you about conjunctions. Following the ‘family’ analogy, since conjunctions tend to manifest as one functional unit, would you think it fair to say that each planet in the conjunction has some boundary problems with the other? 😉 It could be possible to overextend the analogy, but I’m having fun thinking about a codependent Venus-Sun, or Mars projecting onto the Moon— and so on!

  2. I got excited seeing the title of this so I didn’t read all the way down yet. I’ve been enjoying a podcast called Psychology in Seattle which is hosted by a Systems therapy educated psychologist. He admits he’s 5-10 pc on the narcissism spectrum, however, which makes me wonder. (For instance, he’s super into attachment theory.) But, I’ve been enjoying his takes all the same. I have Mercury trine Pluto. Astrology does help me understand and integrate myself, it also helps me find a vocabulary to communicate with others without imposing my advice on them and predict how they will communicate with me :/

    • Maybe some people are just parts.. like people with seesaw charts.. idk if oppositions can ever merge..
Thinking of my oppositions, they are weird and I still don’t have a handle on them.. I’ve been such a lower chart person, having an upper progressed chart is really refreshing.. I’d like to have more 9th and 10th house placements..

  3. Astrology has absolutely helped me understand myself – far more so than any session with a trained counselor and for a fraction of the cost! An experienced astrologer can see your life issues, challenges, innate gifts, relationship dramas, etc. at first glance.

  4. It has helped me so much, especially when I am identifying with one part more than the others. I remember reading a great tip from an astrologer “don’t let any one planet or luminary control the party.” For many years my eighth house moon was in charge 🙂
