Daily Tarot, April 1, 2011: Karma Cards (Astrology) Deck Review

April 1st, 2011 @ 5:03 am by Dixie

Astrology Meets Tarot!

karma-cardsI usually stay away from Oracle decks here, although I own several. They’re just not topical for a Tarot column on an astrology blog! But I’ll make an exception for the Karma Cards, at it’s a divination tool centered on astrology. Very cool idea!

The Karma Cards were developed by astrologer Monte Farber. The cards are divided into Planet, Sign and Houses. making a deck of 36 total. In addition to using it as a divination tool, it’s a pretty friendly way to learn more astrology.

Daily Tarot, March 6, 2011: Universal Fantasy Tarot Deck Review

March 6th, 2011 @ 5:03 am by Dixie

Astrology Meets Tarot!

tarot-deck-review-universal-fantasyBeing a die-hard deck fiend, I’ve been known to pick up decks after laborious and loving consideration, or on a split-second of whim of impulse. The Universal Fantasy Tarot falls into the latter category.

I wanted some new blood—er, I mean cards—and have my work here to justify my habit. I love playing Dungeons and Dragons based games with my man, and thought this would be a cool extension of that interest. The box was pretty. So I grabbed it and went! I would have benefited from giving it more consideration.

Daily Tarot, February 27, 2011: Morgan-Greer Tarot Deck Review

February 27th, 2011 @ 5:03 am by Dixie

Astrology Meets Tarot!

IMG_0786When I mentioned in amazement I didn’t have ANY Tarot decks on my wishlist, Xenia stepped in to rectify that and got me hooked up with a the Morgan-Greer Tarot. Thanks, Xenia!

Morgan-Greer is a Rider-Waite-Smith clone from 1979. The artwork reminds me a lot of the Aquarian Tarot, if it were done with bold coloring instead of pastels. It’s indeed a lovely deck.

Dixie’s Daily Tarot, December 31, 2010: Housewives Tarot Deck Review

Astrology Meets Tarot

houswives-tarot-review

First time I saw the Housewives Tarot, I was simultaneously attracted and disturbed. I love kitschy fifties artwork. But on a Tarot deck? I wondered if it was one of the endless line of annoyingly mediocre novelty decks, or is there something useful there?  Are the cards spoofs, or do they address the meanings traditionally represented in Tarot?

I mentioned the Housewives Tarot as an example of an odd deck I was interested in, and Jilly got it for me for Christmas. Thanks, Jilly! So now I can share it with you.

Dixie’s Daily Tarot, November 7, 2010: Tarot Nova Deck Review

November 7th, 2010 @ 5:03 am by Dixie

Astrology Meets Tarot

mini-tarot-nova-deckI was in the market for a mini-deck to carry in my purse, hoping to feed my inner-deck fiend at the same time I went portable. While I considered a small Universal Waite, I have the Radiant Rider Waite already. Thoth comes in miniature and I’ve been wanting to learn it, but wasn’t looking to learn on tiny cards. The imagery didn’t have to be traditionally based, but I wanted the meanings to be so I’d be comfortable reading with it right way. Enter Tarot Nova.

Dixie’s Daily Tarot, October 3, 2010: Legacy of the Divine Tarot Deck Review

October 3rd, 2010 @ 5:03 am by Dixie

Astrology Meets Tarot

EmpressI eyed the Gilded Tarot Deck for months, drawn in by the stunning digital art of Ciro Marchetti, but just never felt convinced to take the leap, although I was certainly tempted. Afterward, the same artist had done the self-published Tarot of Dreams, another gorgeous deck. When I saw his third deck, Legacy of the Divine, I stopped eying and started buying.  Ha!

Dixie’s Daily Tarot, September 19, 2010: Mystic Dreamer Tarot Deck Review

Astrology Meets Tarot

7-cupsThe Mystic Dreamer Tarot was one of those decks I saw lots of buzz about when I was in the market for a new deck, so I took a closer look. It was lovely! The images are digitally manipulated photos, somewhat more modern than Rider/Waite, but styled to retain a fantasy/medieval feeling. Even for the most modern images, the burnt paper design of borders and embellished typeface keep the overall Renaissance mood of the deck intact. It’s indeed an engaging and pretty deck.

Dixie’s Daily Tarot, September 12, 2010: Psychic Tarot Oracle Deck Review

September 12th, 2010 @ 5:03 am by Dixie

Astrology Meets Tarot

IMG_0077It’s a pretty poorly kept secret by now that I’m a total deck fiend. I managed to keep it  in check for a long time, but after I started writing the Daily Tarot, I have an excellent excuse to indulge myself more often.  Even so, I do try to make considered choices, and The Psychic Tarot Oracle Deck by medium John Holland is one I looked over a few times before I purchased it.

Dixie’s Daily Tarot, September 6, 2010: Osho Zen Tarot Deck Review

September 6th, 2010 @ 5:03 am by Dixie

Astrology Meets Tarot

picCards_Zen023TheMasterI wound up with this deck quite serendipitously. I was browsing a local metaphysical shop, looking for a new “friend” if one happened to speak to me, and the fella working there was SOOOOOO excited about how great the deck was, I ended up buying it. I swear, his joy at sharing something he obviously loved  was infectious. I thought it was a beautiful deck, but wasn’t sure I’d be able to read with it. I actually bought it to ride his happy wave.

Dixie’s Daily Tarot, August 29, 2010: Shadowscapes Tarot Deck Review

Astrology Meets Tarot

deathThere’s no argument: the Shadowscapes Tarot, featuring watercolors by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law, is a gorgeous deck. The fantasy style artwork  is captivating and colorful. Each card is a work of art in it’s own right. And it absolutely has my favorite version of the Death ever—a phoenix, after he’s arisen from the flames.  In fact, there are lots of animals in the artwork. Foxes, birds, butterflies, lizards and dragons are favorites. Fairies, fish and owls also abound. There’s magic in every card.
