This is pure theory of mine, based on observation over the years, combined with logic. It seems to me that depression comes in at least two flavors.

I have long seen that people who do not express their Mars energy (their anger and ambition) tend to become depressed.  This makes sense as raw male energy by it’s nature is overt. If it is repressed it can do nothing but pervert and most commonly this manifests as depression.  Mars likes to go and do, win and conquer and when people are depressed they tend to feel lethargic and want to sleep all day so you see the correlation.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and Leo In Astrology – POLL

September 5th, 2011 @ 7:12 am by Elsa

Astrology in real life.

Each year around this time, I pull up a post I wrote in 2006 about how I thought Leo (solar) types were predisposed to having Seasonal Affective Disorder. I’ve seen nothing in the last five years to change my mind on this and since I definitely benefit from one of using a SAD light, I like to let people know these lights are effective, provided you’ve not got an organic problem with depression and even then they may help.

Depression and the Natal Chart by moonpluto

February 8th, 2011 @ 5:17 pm by Elsa

“What is to give light must endure burning.”
- Viktor Frankl

What is depression? The definition seems to change no matter who you ask, whether it’s your internist, your manicurist, guru, mother, yourself, old psych textbook or new psych textbook, your first therapist or your um current one.

Now, I’m no stranger to The Big D, and the stigma of it, feeling ashamed for what I believe I cannot do. And so often I’ve scrutinized my chart for clues, keys, solutions. Answers. Where does the dark tendency come from? And I can read a book like anyone else, read about moon-Saturn contacts, for example.

And so often in depression, you find yourself thinking what the bleep is this FOR?

Learning As An Antidote To Depression – Help For People Facing Life-Threatening Illness

October 23rd, 2010 @ 12:28 pm by Elsa

Jupiter and Saturn are a natural pair.

I work with people battling life-threatening illness often enough.  In astrology, Saturn signifies depression and oppression, and also support.  Cancer treatment is oppressive. Realizing you may die is depressing. People facing these things need support.

Jupiter is the natural antidote to Saturn. These planets are a natural pair so when your life is heavily burdened by Saturn type things, Jupiter type things are the best remedy.

In the case of someone is ill, we’re talking jokes and laughter and optimism. Storytelling. A belief system. Getting outside if at all possible. Exposure to a a variety of perspectives.  These are all Jupiter-ruled things but I have really seen work well to buoy people is when they are LEARNING something and I am talking about SPORT.

Astrology-Based Advice: Gambling Addict Husband Is Depressed, Second Marriage On The Rocks

September 25th, 2010 @ 6:12 am by Elsa

Dear Elsa,

I’m only 34. After I got married, my husband changed. He is a gambling addict with severe depression, and his sex drive is nil. I’m torn between remaining a dutiful wife or letting go of our marriage of 3 years. Even with counseling, our home isn’t a pleasant place and I’m battling fearfulness of failure & loss.

Why can’t I leave my marriage? I can’t figure out if it’s out of loyalty, fear, spiritual reasons or emotional problems. I’m really trying to understand if it’s me AND him (it’s my 2nd marriage) or just him. Will it ever get any better or should I painfully leave him in my past?

If I do this, I’m VERY FEARFUL of another emotional mess down the road. Thank you for ANY advice as I will seriously think on it.

Second Marriage

libra horoscope shirt scalesDear Marriage,

Well, you sound perfectly miserable. I’m sure I would be same if I were married to a depressed man who threw our money away, while leaving me to shrivel up and die on the vine in the bed.

As to whose fault it is… well obviously, you have a very difficult partner here. However it was you who picked him. And why is that?  You may as well stay until you can figure this out and with that I can probably help.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Is Leo Predisposed? What About Light Therapy?

September 16th, 2010 @ 5:15 am by Elsa

Astrology In Real Life…

sunshineDo you suffer from SAD? People with Seasonal Affective Disorder get the winter blues and I recently have become aware of how prevalent and serious this problem can be. Deprived of sunlight, people see their mood drop and it stays that way until May or so when the days get longer.  I am not prone to depression and I don’t have SAD but I do have Leo in my chart and people with Leo absolutely need to exposure to the sun.

I agree with Charlotte but I think there is another angle, or separate phenomena that goes on here. One that can’t be stopped because it’s a law of nature.

Saturn Transit The Moon (Mine): Guideposts

February 10th, 2009 @ 7:48 pm by Elsa

Astrology in real life

I wrote these blogs about depression today, I am trying to pull my house together. I am depressed about this because if you’ve been reading me awhile then you know I already went through a living hell fixing this house some years ago (and court in regards to that ::rolls eyes) and now I have to do it again.

I also thought the soldier would be here to help me… er, I mean do it for me but as you can see that is not meant to be. He is helping me in the way he can help me (he working hard and sending money) but as far as doing what has to be done, I am on my own… again.

Regarding, Astrology, Society, Mars, Anger and Depression, I just want to make it clear, I am not Tom Cruise. In fact, I loathe the man for telling pregnant women how they do and do not feel when their hormones fall off a cliff as if he’d know.

I don’t know what major depression is. I do know what “depression” is though, when it is situational and I have a lot of clients who contact me when Saturn contacts their Moon and they find themselves depressed.

Saturn in Virgo and it is throwing many who have Sagittarius Moons for a loop. If your Moon is in Sadge, you are naturally buoyant and when you find yourself sluggish… well it’s so foriegn, many don’t even know they are depressed.

Commenting on the comments

Togi writes regarding the repression of Mars energy in our culture:

“We were just not meant to live this way. Look how many people are on anti-depressants and other mood stabilizers?!”

That’s right – people are drugged you and passive. Those anti-depressants do what? they kill the sex drive!

Don’t get me wrong, I know there is such a thing as clinical depression but for many, they’d be better off to treat the problem with endorphins.
