I’ve been pretty seriously worried about my husband since very early this morning, I thought he might be dead. I now know he is not dead but 15 minutes ago, I did not know that.

What I did know is he was either dead or asleep and as the hours and then more hours passed, the idea he’d overslept became less likely. How long can a person oversleep anyway?

The soldier and I were talking about lemonade which I do not like. He is distraught over this (his word) because he loves lemonade and he’s gone as far as to say if we’d have met a kids (little kids… 8 years old or something) he might not have liked me.

“I think I’d have wanted to have me a lemonade-drinkin’ woman,” he said. “You know. I want to drink some lemonade with my girl.” We were getting into the bathtub at the time.

“Henry (my grandfather) wanted a glass of lemonade once,” I said. “He was dying.”

It’s fairly well known I have no fear of death. I am already more than satisfied with the amount of life I have been given and could go in peace at any time.

The other day I told my husband (yet again) that if I had some hard core diagnosis, I would not want to take treatment. I just would not want to “fight for my life”, I would be much happier to be left to die peacefully with the pain controlled if possible. I explained the sterile environment is anathema to me, as is being wheeled around and having tubes sticking out all over in some herioic effort to save my life that I am going to lose anyway. “I would do it you wanted me to though,” I said.

From 2007:

When I was young I was inundated with death. People died, died, died, died and died. Having known nothing but, it never occurred to me this would or could ever stop until did. The string of deaths stopped abruptly when I was about 21 but I was so busy waiting for the other shoe to drop this did not register for about 10 years.

It’s now been 20 years and virtually no one has died anywhere near me. I have always assumed the deaths would start back up at some point. This seems inevitable although I don’t worry about it anymore because I feel much better equipped to cope.

To update in 2010, it appears I am going back into a cycle like this. I didn’t handle death very well when I was young. I had no elegance about me or about it but do think I am far better prepared now.

Have you ever had something rain down like this and then… stop?

“Yeah, she lost her grandmother and she has already lost both parents. I wonder if that makes it worse,” I asked my husband after writing the post on loss.

“I don’t know,” he said. “I have lost so much in my life. I have lost so much, I don’t know about that.”

“Hmm.”

“Everyone loses everything eventually,” he added. “I lost things very early in life though… I think. Really, I just don’t know about this, I just don’t know.”

He’s right. Everyone does lose everything eventually. Ever gone to an estate sale? They sell your couch so fast it’s a joke.

What matters is your legacy. So says my 8th house.

Scorpio and the 8th house are associated with death. I can’t think of where I might have read this specifically (must have been somewhere) but my personal experience tells that Scorpio and people like me with a heavy duty 8th house are not only exposed to more than their share of death, they can sense who is leaving and likewise, who is not.

I have had the experience myself, pretty routinely and have been on the other end of it as well. For example a few years ago I was called back for a suspicious mammogram and my ex (Sun, Mercury, Venus and Saturn in Scorpio) laughed at the thought I might be ill. Very simply he knew this: I wasn’t.

One thing about having a packed 8th house, everyone is always innocent but you. It sets up like this on a routine basis and has throughout my life. I think this is why people like me find and maintain an inner circle.

I remember some years ago the soldier told me he wanted someone to be on his side.  Be on side and stay on his side. It’s too much to ask of most but I understood him and while I didn’t say anything at the time (he’d have never believed me), I silently committed to being on his side from then on out, for the rest of my life.
