Cancer, Family And The IC
“We can speak without voice to the trees and the clouds and the waves of the sea. Without words they respond through the rustling of leaves and the moving of clouds and the murmuring of the sea.”
–Paul Tillich
The sign of Cancer is ruled by the Moon, motherhood, the emotions, femininity. Cancer rules the 4th house and the second angle, the IC or nadir. The 4th house is the realm of the family, the home, ones roots and ancestry. The IC or nadir is a point (angle) that can be analyzed to understand one’s personal attitudes and the conditions of one’s “home base.” The Moon itself can be examined to determine what is necessary for one’s satisfaction and the IC is complementary in its involvement as it shows our archetypal home, where we came from and, in a greater scope, where our needs originate.

The Fourth House – Your Base
Astrology for beginners – See all beginner posts
The 4th house in your chart reveals your base. For example, if Saturn rules your 4th or if Saturn in placed in your 4th house, I would consider you to be fear-based. If Jupiter ruled your 4th or was placed there, I would think of you as faith-based, etc.
The 10th house is public, the 4th house is not. Whatever is described by your 10th house is there to be seen by the public. In contrast only you and your intimates are likely to be aware of the qualities described by your 4th house. You do have to consider the entire chart as there are exceptions to this and I can serve as an example.

Natal Neptune In The 4th House
“Confusion is a word we have invented for an order which is not yet understood”
–Henry Miller
Neptune is a very slow-moving planet. It is considered generational. That is to say people of the same age will generally have Neptune in the same sign. Therefore its house placement and its relationship to personal planets are what personalize its impact. My own Neptune is in Scorpio which places me within a certain age range; all you have to do to figure that out is consult an ephemeris. My Neptune falls into my 4th house, moon-ruled and concerned with matters of home, hearth, housing and parental issues.

Kenny Rogers – The Great Mediator
Hopefully Coherent Ramblings
Yesterday I started telling you about “Cousin Gerard” and our trip to see where Arnold works here.
It was January of ’06. Mercury was conjunct Pluto in Sagittarius and Mars was opposite Jupiter at the time. People were making mountains out of molehills which was hilarious if you were an observer, not so much if you were in the thick of it.
Li-Tian greeted us with gracious intentions. All she had in the refrigerator were three eggs which she whipped up into a large flat omelet and set on a plate in the middle of the table for us all to share. I had just spent a year in China and had grown accustomed to this type of family style eating, Gerard on the other hand was visibly uncomfortable. He shifted back and forth in his seat and declined the offering.

Surreal Family Antics by My Neptune in the 4th
Hopefully Coherent Ramblings
Several references to Kenny Rogers around here recently and I am reminded of “Cousin Gerard.”
This was at the tail end of my Pluto to natal Neptune transit and I woke up in Las Vegas. We were staying with my boyfriend’s aunt from his mother’s side of the family, the Chinese side. While we were there his father, the travelling professor phoned to tell us that “Cousin Gerard” from Austria would be joining us. It was a very Wes Anderson-esque extended family comedy situation.

Capricorn (and Cancer) in Relationship – The 4th and 10th House
Ask the collective
Years ago I noticed there are parent/child themes in every relationship a person with an emphasis Capricorn or a Cancer forms. This includes people with emphasis on the 4th or 10th houses and I don’t think it’s wrong, it’s inescapable.
This weekend one of my friends (with Capricorn) popped off with this:
“You have little boys who want to be your man and I have full grown men who want to be my little boy.”
I laughed, but she is quite right.
Do you experience this? Which side are you on? Do you play both?
Double Virgo Moves Country, Wonders If She Should Go Home: Saturn Transit Through Virgo
Dear Elsa,
I left my home country two years ago to study in the States, and since then I have had a very difficult time coming to terms with my realization of how things really were back home. My mother is a very controlling and sometimes verbally abusive woman. My dad, although a nice man, is emotionally distant and my brothers haven’t bothered to talk to me since I moved here. The moment I stopped making effort to keep in touch, they disappeared.
So, here I am in the States all alone, with friends but not ones that are deep, intense or intimate. I was in a casual relationship this past year with a man here in the states who I loved very deeply, but who didn’t want to be with me exclusively. After going to therapy this past summer for depression, I started to stand up for myself, create healthy boundaries, and get angry for the first time in my life. After this change in me started happening, most of my friends back home just disappeared.
I feel very lonely and craving deeply to have a home to call my own. So should I stay here in the States hoping to eventually build a family of my own, or go back home?
Double Virgo
Macedonia
Dear Virgo,
I don’t think running home is going to solve this. Your chart reeks of everything you just described. For example, the disappearing partners? You have Neptune (erase) on your descendant (relationships) – so wherever you go, you are going to find this scenario constellating and only consciousness will help.
Same on the family issues. If you go home you are depressed around family. If you stay in your new land, you are depressed with no family but help is on the way.
However the help that is coming is Saturn’s transit through Virgo and Saturn is not some kind of light fare thing. Virgo will be called upon to grow up and define themselves and this goes for all Virgos not just you.
But specific to you, all your Virgo (and your natal Saturn) is concentrated in and around the 4th house / Moon which represents your family and your roots. And you can see how things are things are beginning to become concentrated here and I’ll tell you exactly what you are going to have to do to resolve this:
You are going to have to build (Saturn) your own family (4th house). You will have to be responsible for putting down your roots, wherever you want them and basically mapping out your piece of ground and I will use my friend, Denis as an example because he’s a good one.
Denis came to the US from Cameroon and he has been here 15 years or so. He is well established in this country but maintains connections with his home country both here and there.
He stays in contact, and is currently opening a business in Cameroon. Closer to home (this home) he is part of a network, a support group of sorts for transplanted Cameroonians who have relocated to this city. He has also formed relationships with people who have nothing to do with Cameroon… however he feeds them his home food!
I’m sure you get the picture. This is the answer. You can go home but if you do, you still need to map out and stake your territory and one more tip:
Personally, this is a 5 year odyssey you are heading into, so please adjust your watch to “very slow progress”.
Good luck!
