College Roommate – Setting Boundaries
Elsa,
I’m having a lot of trouble with my roommate. She is one of my good friends, and I know that often spells trouble. It’s not that she’s particularly hard to live with, I just think I never really got to KNOW her before.
We’re at a very demanding school and she is enrolled in two demanding majors- Engineering and Music. She has a lot of trouble motivating herself and getting her work done. She comes from a very traditional Chinese family and has always had lots of pressure to do well- but now that pressure is across the country and she hints that she wants ME to motivate her.
I’m not comfortable with that. I believe that motivation HAS to come from within. I’m not going to be her motivator. And it takes a lot for me to say this, but from what I see, she can’t handle it here, at least not in her major.
I think she wants to leave, except for one thing- she’s enmeshed in the social life here. She’s in band, she has friends in our dorm. She will cling for dear life to keep from having to leave that, but she doesn’t seem to want to put in the extra effort in her schoolwork to keep herself here.
I’m at a loss. I can’t deal with all this at once. I can deal with a few problems here and there, but she acts like her life is ALL problems, and I’m not so sure she’s wrong. I want to tell her the truth, from an outsider point of view.
How do I help her realize that she’d be happier somewhere else?
Resentful Roommate
Dear Roommate,
It sounds like she wants you to take responsibility for her, and this is a boundary issue for the most part. You need to define the line between you and her – and I don’t mean you have to lack compassion.
You can listen to her tale of woe, but respond in this sort of way:
“Yeah, that’s too bad. But at least you know what’s wrong. This way you can fix it…”
Get it? You’re not her keeper!!!
And as for the “truth”… I don’t think anyone should be telling another person what their “truth” is unless they ask. But if they ask, then it’s fair game!
“Do you think I belong here?”
“Hell no!”
And can you see this is another boundary issue?
That’s what I’d like you to take from this. Draw some lines with this girl and once you do, stay on your side. She will make it or break it soon enough and this is not your problem. Your problem is that you make other people’s problems your problem and luckily, this is very easy to fix.
Good luck.

Fairy Nature
Dear Elsa,
Lately I feel like I’m floundering. I’m trying to get my degree even though I haven’t picked a major. And to top it off, I don’t even know what I’m going to do with my degree! It’s just a stopgap measure while I try to get a handle on who I am.
Is there a fundamental disconnect in me that keeps me from finding my way? If this is the way my whole life is going to be, then I desperately need some advice, because I’m lost at sea.
Where the hell am I supposed to go from here?
Adrift
Dear Adrift,
Yeah, you’re pretty spacey but I’m not sure that’s a disconnect. As a matter of fact, it could indicate the exact opposite.
I understand you have no idea what you’re doing and feel as if you’re fumbling in the dark. But just think about being exactly the opposite of you. Think about being one of those people, who think they know exactly what they’re doing. You know, they’re twenty-four years old and they’ve got their whole life planned. They’ve got it all figured out.
You know what happens to them? Well, to a small minority, nothing. But most of them wake up five years later and say, “what the hell was I thinking? Whose bullshit life am I living?” And at that point, they’re very confused! They basically have to retrace their steps and try to figure out where they disconnected.
Fact is, a person who feels like they are flailing may very well be taking the shortest route to fulfillment. Because it is in this “void space” that real clarity comes. So here’s what I think.
I think you are very connected – you’re just connected to the ethereal world. And if that sounds too woo-woo for you, just consider traditional religion. Religious types pray to “God” for guidance. They pray for direction from a source outside themselves and no one bothers them about it! So this is what I would recommend.
I suggest you embrace your Fairy nature. Ask the universe to show you in which direction your path lies and wait for it to be revealed. Then, once you have your answer, gently adjust your oar and drift yourself in that direction, smiling all the way.
Good luck!

Double Sagittarius – Saturn Transit to Natal Jupiter
Elsa,
I have no idea how I ended up where I am. Me, crunching numbers for a living?! Blehhh, I was supposed to be a teacher!
I’m in a field that’s interesting but I’m not doing interesting work. Sending out bills from a law firm is something anyone can do, ya know? And answering phones? Arghh – I’m good at it, but don’t like it.
I just don’t know where I’m going career wise, and it’s really throwing me for a loop. Am I meant to be dealing with the public like this? Am I supposed to serve?
Any advice?
Scattered Sagittarius
Dear Sadge,
Advice? Yes! Go back to school! I don’t see any other way. Read your post – it’s there in your own words. “I was supposed to be a teacher.” And come on. With five planets in Sagittarius, it’s all about higher learning. And teaching, for chrissakes! The law is fine, but you need an education, hon. You just do.
And timing? Well check this:
Sadge is Jupiter ruled. At the moment, Saturn is transiting your natal Jupiter (higher education). And look what’s happening. A Saturn figure (me) is telling you to get your ass in gear. Go learn something. Take responsibility (Saturn) for your expansion (Jupiter)!
For the record, you can miss this window if you want, but your Saturn return is a mere two and a half years away. You’ll have a lot easier time then, if you make the right choice now.
Good luck.

Brainy Dropout – Cancer, Capricorn and a 12th House Moon
Dear Elsa,
Over the past few years of my adult life, I have made terrible career and life decisions. I’m supposed to be the ‘brainy’ one, the one that should be doing GREAT things with her life. But it hasn’t worked out that way.
First, I dropped out of school due to bullying. I tried to go back to studying… but my heart was not in it. So I joined the armed forces as an engineer… but even though I was pretty darn good at the job, I just was not happy. I realized I was just trying to make my parents happy and proud, and so I dropped out.
There have been many other career paths that I have failed at. It’s getting to a point where I don’t want to try anymore. I feel completely lost. I have no direction in my life and no sense of purpose. I do try to come up with new ideas to make it all seem worthwhile, like trying to get my degree or maybe setting up my own business. But I just can’t seem to make any of these things happen. All I do is dream.
I’m lost and sad with no one to turn to. Please help!
Sign me,
Hurting
Dear Hurting,
I agree you are a brainy one. You’re twenty-three years old and you just laid out your whole birth chart! Your whole character, I mean. Everything you need to know about you is in your post. Most people reach thirty, forty, or even fifty and still have no idea who they are.
Now here’s my advice. SLOW DOWN. Slow way down, and take each of these things one by one. It’s like this:
You’ve frantic because you’ve identified all these parts of your personality and they don’t just automatically gel together. Imagine a body moving herky-jerky style as opposed to all the muscle groups working together to create movement that is smooth and flowing. For some people this comes easy. But others have to train and you’re one of them. So let me take this apart for you.
- You have Cancer in your chart and your parents matter. You also need to hole up now and then.
- You have Capricorn in your chart and you need to achieve. You are also inordinately hard on yourself.
- You have a twelfth house moon. You need to dream.
Get it?
Now go up there and read your post. Can you see how these sides of you are in a state of chaos? They are. And you’re going to have to slow way, WAY down if you want to untangle this.
Your ultimate solution will respect all sides of yourself. Like this:
Go to work at a job with status (Capricorn)… call Mom when you get home (Cancer)… and then unplug the phone, turn on the music and drift (Twelfth house Moon).
You’re brilliant for a reason. It’s so you can figure this out. And your dreams can help. You can do it, and nothing is more classy than that.
Good luck.

Faith – Pisces and Scorpio with Capricorn
Dear Elsa,
I am not sure where I’m going in my life.
I’m a year away from graduating college with a degree in Religious Studies – not a very marketable degree when it comes to getting a job. I have mediocre grades, no money, and more importantly, I don’t know what I want to do for the rest of my life. Grad school is pretty much out of the picture.
I used to have specific goals and plans earlier in my life… but then I realized that they really weren’t my interests. The plans that were my own got lost in a jumble of events, primarily the death of my mom last year.
At times, I’d like to pursue writing as a career. But it’s like somebody disconnected the creativity and ambition wires in my mind. Why even write, when so many books have the same storyline?
The other path I would possibly like to take would be to work with survivors of domestic and sexual violence. But then I question my ability again. Am I just trying to solve my own issues of an abusive past?
I’m wondering how apathy took over my optimism. I’m having difficulties trying to motivate myself to start school. Will this indecisiveness ever end?
Sincere thanks,
School Dazed and Confused
Dear Dazed and Confused,
Oh my! Your chart is shocking. It’s painful to look at, but it’s very easy to read.
Now I am loathe to tell someone what they ought to do with their life. For one thing, I don’t want the responsibility! But your case is exceptional, so here’s what I think, in plain language:
Regardless of supposed impracticality, I don’t think religious studies is a bad choice of study for you. On the contrary, you’re a faith-based person. You’re all about what you believe. Although you’re lost in the moment, over the course of your lifetime I think you’ll go back again and again to what you’ve learned in school. And this will work for you! So maybe you can see that in the grand design, you’ve not made a mistake. You’ve made an investment in your future.
Now as for working with trauma victims… by the look of your chart, this seems an extremely good fit for you. For starters, you have significant Pisces in your chart and you’re simply going to have to serve or suffer. So that meets that need.
Furthermore, you have Scorpio prominent, so you’re a natural in the field of psychology. You know how to swiftly get to the root of something, and better yet, the capacity to heal others. So what’s holding you up?
It’s your Capricorn. You feel you are broken in some way. You say so in plain language.
You’re interested in effects of violent trauma. Never mind how you got that way, the fact is that not everyone is. This is a focus for you, while the person next to you may be interested in Wall Street or engineering. So who do you think ought to go into this field, hmm?
And I’m not ignoring the money issue. It’s just that I have faith too. Look for the resources and if it’s meant to be, you will surely find them. Good luck.
