Integrating The Astrology Cookbook: The Moon Needs…
“Astrology is a language. If you understand this language, the sky speaks to you.”
–Dane Rudhyar
When I started studying astrology I began, as most do, by reading “cookbook” descriptions of the expression of planets in signs, Moon In Capricorn, Mars in Scorpio, and so on. Early on I realized that none of these explanations was a complete reflection of my own experience. I then investigated what is the function of each planet, without regard to its placement. Learning astrology is like learning a new language. You can communicate by learning key phrases, “donde esta el bano?” but true understanding emerges when you begin to grasp the specificity of each individual word and its meaning, conjugation, and syntax.
It is my own personal bias that the most significant element driving human behavior is need. An individual’s needs are expressed by moon placement. I read cookbook explanations with an open mind until I get to statements such as, “the (x) moon thinks,” “the (x) moon acts,” or some variation thereof. The moon needs and feels. Mercury thinks; Mars acts. What appeals to Venus is esthetic, not need-driven. Before one starts mixing up ingredients in the astrological cookbook it is important to be precise or the results may be… odd.
Tomatoes and apples are both fruits but tomato pie, apple spaghetti? Ew. Know your ingredients, and then you can start pairing them in realistic, gastronomical (and astrological) delights that satisfy (the moon). When you understand what a particular moon needs, and can hold that singularly in your mind, you can expand the scope by comparing it to another element of the chart. Compare what it needs to what the person likes (Venus). Compare the moon needs to how the person acts (Mars) to get it. Now, how do these three compare? Perfect your biscuits before you move on to paella.
What planet jumps out at you first when looking at a chart? And why?

..I look at shapes that aspects make. How my eye is drawn around the chart. That is their view of things; how they’re moving in the world around them. I trust that the chart can tell me what I need to know to respect a person’s energy. Saturn in the 8th–it’s super important for me to respect another person’s nature/energies.
Great points, made with absolute clarity. Perfecto.
Nothing, still learning. But what you guys have taught me thus far. Live your sun, feed your moon. Your article on art made me realize something I never thought about before. I love Van Gogh and Tchaikovsky most of my friends don’t get it and tease me over it. I couldn’t explain it, well I have Venus Moon in Capricorn. I love the old masters, so now I don’t care what you think. If you come to my house and I am blasting the 1812 overture, oh well get over it. I am feeding my moon. Now when people ask me you like that shit. I just say yeah. But my thought bubble things hah it’s just my cappy moon feeding my cappy venus and pleasing my scorpio mars. So yeah slowly but surely I am learning.
My 11th house Pisces Sun, Aquarius Mercury and Venus all get frustrated with my Capricorn Moon. I dread to think what I’d be like without it though.
Jupiter. Cuz I’m a Polyanna.
Like crispito, it’s the overall shape which jumps out at me, rather than any one aspect. I’m disturbed by charts with everything bunched into little zig-zags in one small area for example; but I don’t know enough to know whether I should be.
Possible versions of my chart (using Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio as Ascendant) all have big angry red oppositions between Saturn and my Sun and my Venus – hard to look elsewhere first! It’s always strong visuals like that which draw my eye – then I’ll look to see which planets etc are involved
Great post.
I love this post!
It really shed a little “light” for me.
I really like this. I was just telling someone yesterday that I’m still in the “cookbook” stages of astrology, yet somehow I am able to synthesize some elements when doing readings for others.
When looking at a chart, I immediately note Sun/Moon/Asc. for a quick summary. I find it easier to explain those three first to people who know little outside sun sign stuff.
My mars jumps out at me first. It’s right up there at the top.
And you know, with a sleight change of ingrediants a tomato pie actually sounds tasty!
Love the picture you chose; I remember that old Twilight Zone episode well, including the last line “It’s a cookbook! It’s a cookbook!”
As far as my Aquarius moon goes, I am still trying to figure it out.
bahaha! you got it! I remember when one of my mother’s students tried to pass that off as their own work. the teachers had a good laugh over that one.
thanks for the compliments! they really pumped me up! I can leave the house for milk and swedish fish now!
satori you are wonderful:)
ROFLMAO.
Can you hear the cannons going off in the background as she blasts that poseur out of the water.
ditto chrispito <3
Thanks Satori ¡
moon in aquarius: square mars, square jupiter, square neptune : grand cross 1,3,7, 10
mmh… my moon wants to eat the world and that is impossible
i better tell to my moon where is the bathroom.
Thanks for this post Satori.
The “stars” I read in daily papers, magazines etc etc I call “Fast Food Astrology”
All these food analogies =) But hey, that’s what it all is.. a big boiling pot!
Cheers.
Wow, thanks, I don’t think I have given proper weight to my moon lately, with so many other heavy hitting entities hanging around. It is key, and a placement I had almost disowned, it contradicts so many other things in my chart. Time to reclaim the moooon.
A wonderful post Satori, and you have me thinking.
I ADORE swedish fish!!! Pick up a pound for me, Satori! I’ll serve them up with my man;-)
When people ask me about what the rising, moon, sun are in astrology… I paint the picture of the Sun being the Crust of a pie, and Rising being the top of the Pie, and the Moon being what the pie is made of the core… I love this post… it get’s you looking at how it all creates the ingredients to how someone relates to the world…great JOB!
I believe the Ascendant is key factor. It’s what I first see in terms of that person’s behavior.
Then I look to where the ruler of the ascendant is housed and the aspects to it.
Wonderful Post Satori!!! I dont think I look at particular planet unless I have personally motivate to look at a particular planet
however when I look at at a chart for the first time, I look for what sticks out to me whether they have a stellium in a sign or house. An overbalance of elements or modes or any thing that is reinforced or if a chart is got every finger in the pie by being spread evenly. I love looking at aspects though.
key phrases like ‘donde este el bano’ hahahahahaha

Hugs Mariana!
Oh crap! Typo! I meant someone is asking directions for the bathroom, and the person they are asking points and says ‘over there by the full moon.’ [Right near the mercury retrograde] Sheesh!
Tomatoes and apples are both fruits but tomato pie, apple spaghetti? Ew.
OK, that cracked me up, and stood as a challenge to Uranus (rebel always on the lookout for a cause) who is my chart ruler!!! I so want to go make some apple spaghetti!!!
What planet jumps out at you first when looking at a chart? And why?
I usually go looking for the person’s Moon. And if I don’t have the data to know their Moon for sure, my interest in even looking at their chart plummets instantly. Why? The Moon is the key to the clock.
“…who is my chart ruler!!!” totally made me think, “who’s your daddy??” although I suppose if we’re talking moons it’s, “who’s your mommy!!”
Well, to continue on the above theme(s)…
My Moon (mommy) is in Cancer (mommy) so what do I ~need~? Mothering! A mother!
Cancer Moon in ~6th house~ (“Virgo”) specifically needs a mother who is ~clean and cautious (thinks before she acts)~!
…which my mother was: a clean and cautious Cancer Sun!
Who’s my daddy? My Saturn (daddy) is in Capricorn (daddy)… in the ~11th house~ (“Aquarius”)… which brings us back full circle to Uranus (my chart ruler)… Can we see my eternal struggle between discipline (Saturn) and rebellion (Uranus)?
And I have Sun-NN-Mars-Merc in Libra (square my Saturn)
which leads us right to your next post!
A river finds its own way to the ocean. I don’t always use a formula – I let my intuition guide me when first looking at a chart. I feel first, and analyse later. But there are certain things I do with every chart I look at. I look for recurring themes. Recurring themes in a chart confirm character traits that are definitely present. For instance, it may be a ‘splash’ chart (planets splashed everywhere around the chart, which indicates a diversely talented, ‘jack of all trades’ type of personality). Then I will notice Jupiter sitting in Gemini. This placement reconfirms the splash tendency. And there may be more indicators in the chart that keep reinforcing that particular theme, or indeed other themes.
I also look for sub-personalities, which are contradictory indicators within a chart. For instance, a Libran with Sun, Venus and Neptune conjunct in Libra may also have Mars in Aries. Therefore, Mars in Aries would be a sub-personality.
Another thing I always look at is the planet that rules the Sun sign, (because this planet disposits the energy of the Sun) and the sign that that dispositor occupies. The Sun is a very powerful body in everyone’s chart, and the planetary ruler that displaces this energy holds a lot of power, and often takes that power to another sign. This in turn ‘flavours’ the Sun sign. (For instance, an Aries with ruling planet Mars in Libra will be an Arien with a particular ‘flavour’).
The planet that rules the rising sign is also important, and its sign and house position and aspects to it are well worth noting. And so on and so on.
There are many, many other factors to consider of course. For instance, Chiron and the asteroids tell a story on their own.
But I always let my intuition lead, because each chart is individual and different. And this is the part of astrology that no computer alone can ever do.
Oh¡ I see: @Orlando
some thing like this:
“Sr”, the bathroom is over the full moon, run like a hell before the crap reachs you ¡¡¡
HAHAHAAA
HUGS ¡
Wizron, You are making me itch to go back to my natal and start over AGAIN….. I have just started looking at astroids and chiron was controling my mind last week spent a good deal of time geting that out of me. Sometimes I’ll be working on something when all I can see in my head is another part of my chart natal or solar or or or… and off to get what I see out of my head I go. Sure would be nice to get focased and stay there ….
My moon stands out to me and the stellium in Libra. The moon because it’s in my first house conj my ASC and I lead with that. My stellium because it holds my sun which is deeply relationship oriented (Libra 8th). My Pisces moon leads me to enter situations on an emotional level..mine or yours. My Stellium is me (sun) driven (mars) to relate (Libra) through (trine) how the situation feels (Pisces moon). Put those two..sun and moon..together and that’s me.
I am always drawn to the planet that is most heavily aspected. I think it’s a habit that developed because I’m not trained and have never drawn a chart myself. So when I see a chart it is electronic and immediate. The aspect lines make the first impression.
I look at the rising sign first, then at the Sun and Moon both. These three things tell me so much, that the rest is about nuance and details.
Such a good point about the moon! I have my Moon, Mars, and Venus in the same sign, so it is hard for me to distinguish these three from each other. And with my Moon-Mars being tightly conjunct, I am dumbfounded by people who are able to suppress their needs for long. In my case it would be like trying to stop a volcano from erupting :O
“I read cookbook explanations with an open mind until I get to statements such as, “the (x) moon thinks,” “the (x) moon acts,” or some variation thereof. The moon needs and feels. Mercury thinks; Mars acts. … Compare what it needs to what the person likes (Venus). Compare the moon needs to how the person acts (Mars) to get it.”
VERY, very helpful. Thank you so much.
I really enjoyed this. Gave me a bunch of food for thought.
Pluto in the 6th stands out. It forms aspect with my Sun and jupiter and thats it. All my other planets are in weird triangles with each other (sorry Blessed Place I have a creepy chart like that), except for pluto which stand alone. I have NO other planets in house 1-6. All of my planets are in houses 11-7. :/
I tend to look at Mars… the way somebody goes about getting what they want helps me deal with them. For example, I’m more than a little suspicious of a manipulative Mars.
