From Perception To Action: Mercury To Mars

February 4th, 2012 @ 4:31 pm by Satori

“I like to keep an open mind, but not so open that my brain falls out.”
–Judge Harry, “Night Court”

Judge HarryThe way in which you perceive information is represented by your Mercury placement, aspects and the 3rd house. The way in which you act is influenced by your Mars placement, aspects and the first house. How we act is influenced by many different areas, emotions (the Moon), interests (Venus), to name just two. However, any action you consciously mull over is definitely filtered through your Mercury, your thought process. Any action that is precipitated by eternal events is also influenced by Mercury to some degree: your perceptions. You may act (Mars) on an emotion (Moon) but if the event you are reacting to is external it has been filtered through your senses (Mercury).

Other planets aspecting Mercury influence the flow of information we process. Saturn in hard aspect may call for judgements before all the facts are in. Neptune or Jupiter in aspect may expand or confuse the information gathering process to the point where no judgement is ultimately achieved. The relationship between Mercury and Mars is indicative of the point where perception/judgement meets action.

Investigating your Mercury and Mars and how they relate is one of the best things you can do to improve your aim in pursuing your goals. Understanding what your strengths and challenges are in regard to these two is the first step in improving your accuracy in action, your personal effectiveness.

Where are your Mercury and Mars? How would you judge your personal effectiveness?

This is one area I lucked out…Mars is in Aries, and Mercury is in Gemini, so thought and action are fairly swift.

I do have some oppositions like midchart Pisces to aggravate Mercury and all the seventh house Capricorn for Aries mars. How that affects things is not clear to me…

2 degrees apart on my cancer ascendant. I want to say how I feel about something fast, otherwise it will bother me until I do.

Mercury sextile Mars, but Mars conj Neptune. I can figure out what I want to do but it can fall apart during execution.

WoW Satori- What a great post!

My Mercury and Mars are just 4 degrees apart in Pisces and they are trine my Scorpio Moon/Neptune/AC.

I hear with my heart, my mind is driven by my feelings, my actions are motivated by my emotions.

Great post, Satori!

The only relationship between Mars and Mercury is that my Taurus Mercury resides in a house ruled by Mars (my 5th). Aries Mars in my 4th.

I have Mercury/Uranus/Saturn in a T-square (Saturn is the apex) and Mercury trine Moon. I’m adept at processing quickly and acting quickly, too; this is despite the fact Mercury squares Saturn. Uranus wants in on the game!

I would rate my personal effectiveness as very solid. I don’t rate myself as perfect at anything–too much Saturn:)

There’s another angle on Mercury-Mars, “talk the walk” thought to action, and it’s not a pretty one: There is a lot of evidence from various disciplines that there is a great big “gap” between thought and action in ALL of us. We think (Mercury) that we will act a certain way and in congruence with our values (Venus), BUT most of us DO NOT. It is not uncommon but distressingly often the case that we can act in total contradiction and violation of our values. A prime example of this is people who say and believe they are lacking in prejudice and hold the principles of equality and diversity highly, but their actual actions with people unlike them are filled with prejudice. Not to mention the total gap between what a political candidate says he will do and what he actually does. ‘Walking our talk’ (Mars doing Mercury) is the exception to the general rule. My question is, what, therefore, should the astrological rule be, here?
