The New Year’s Sun In Capricorn
“Would you like to swing on a star, carry moonbeams home in a jar, and be better off than you are… or would you rather be a mule?”
–”Swinging on a Star” Lyrics by Johnny Burke
Every year at the turn of the year the Sun is at about ten degrees Capricorn. This means that every New Year the same part of your natal chart is illuminated. All the other planets hit your chart in different places from year to year, but the Sun is always the same (within a degree). The reason it’s such a good time for setting goals (New Year’s resolutions) is that it’s a regular benchmark for seeing how things are going.
For me the New Year’s Sun is always applying into a conjunction with my Moon, a personal new moon. This makes it a particularly good time for me to set intentions for the coming year. However, you can look to the ephemeris to find the date when the Sun hits your own Moon every year, your own new moon, if you want to find the most powerful day for setting intentions for yourself. Monthly, you also have the date when the Moon hits the degree of your Sun. That’s a particularly good time for short term goal-setting.
In any case, it’s interesting to look at the yearly aspects the transiting Sun makes to your chart from ten degrees Capricorn. Every year with the Sun on my Moon it also sextiles my Mercury Sun and squares my Venus. It sets off the most personal and also problematic areas of my chart. This is reflected in the way I experience the holiday every year. However, I can also see clearly the growth (or lack of growth) from year to year. It’s a great learning tool.
Do you know when your own personal new moon occurs? How is the New Year’s Sun hitting YOUR chart?

Thanks for putting these questions out there. My next personal new moon will be March 30th.
The New Year sun is in my 7th house trine my moon 10 degrees Taurus and my Pluto 10 degress Virgo. Although NYE is always a grand trine for me, its also a time of emotional transformation. Not always a pleasant process.
Cool
Never thought of it this way before. The Sun trines my Mercury in Taurus. I’ll have to think about what this means.
I started thinking about this around Halloween, how the sun is hitting your same places each time. I always remember there being some moodiness around those days, so it got me thinking. Looking now, it seems Oct. 31 is 2 days shy of being my personal new moon. New years has always been a “loaded” holiday for me as well … 2 days off of sun opposite sun. Interesting story, a friend of mine has his decedent at 10º Cap, yesterday he apparently asked a mutual friend to marry him in 10 years if they were still single (she said no!) then at midnight he tells me he’d marry me, lol. All I could look at him and say was “I know you would.”
I’m a Capricorn Moon too, although it’s a couple of degrees further to the sign than the New Year Sun. I never make New Year’s resolutions as such, but yes, I start planning. Usually, by the time Sun will be conjunct my Natal Moon around Epiphany, I’ve worked out a plan.
Thanks for that insight Elsa!
My personal new moon is on 18th May.
The Capricorn New Moon trine my Saturn (which conjunct my NN and oppose my Sun). On the first day of a new year, I find it therapeutic to evaluate the year that had just passed (like saying goodbye) and set new goals for the new year.
Interesting! My Personal New Moon is 16th of September. The New Year Sun is in Capricorn/9th. Natally, it always conjuncts my MC, squares my AC, Uranus, Chiron, Juno, and trines Mercury. I usually have deep thoughts around this time.
Transitwise, the Sun conjuncts Pluto, trines Jupiter, and squares the Moon and Uranus. I’m feeling good about changes in my life this year.

Good information!
My personal new moon is on September 14th. I didn’t know to use this date. Cool.
The New Year’s Sun is in my 7th house. Depending on the orb used, it’s opposite my natal Jupiter in Cancer.
