Scorpio Season – Prejudice: “Getting Along With People Is A Hell Of An Edge…”
Astrology in real life
This is from the Bawdy astrology class. I am sorry it’s out of context but it’s a good thing to explore as-is.
I write:
“…We do form prejudices (for good or ill) when we are young. For example, I have had really good experiences with older black men. I have had great, great experiences with them since I was a child and consequently, when I see an older black man, I am wide open when I meet him. I totally expect to get along with him and he with me and for the the two of us to laugh our heads off.
Now, because of this, 9 times out of 10 when I meet an older black man, we hit it off. My guess is that he has little to do with it. The bell goes off in me and no doubt, I approach the meeting with a huge, welcoming grin and total acceptance which sets the tone…”
The picture is of my friend, LB Meridith (read about him) from the Old Man’s Bar (tag). When I met him (at 19), this pattern was well established. I love, Taj Mahal, and if I like Herman Cain, I can’t deny that this could be a large part of it. I am wired to like, Herman Cain.
What is deeply embedded in you? Does it serve you?
When I was pregnant, I moved to the most integrated city in the United State for this single purpose: I wanted my kids to grow up exposed to people of all races. I did this because I was aware of this old black man thing and I was also aware of people who were downright terrified when they met me because I am so er…uncivilized. I wanted my kids to have an edge and I think that getting along with people is a hell of an edge (Mars in Libra).
Can you name one of your prejudices?

I am prejudiced against homeless people and old 40-80-year-old white men with beards, glasses, and baseball caps. Both for good reason because statistically speaking those are probably 95% of the creepy people who have come on to me, grabbed me, groped me in public, etc. They are all crazy, I guess, but still.
I’m prejudice against people who reject too many people. If I see someone rejecting person after person, that person immediately is dubbed ‘snobby’ or ‘stuck up’ in my mind. Where does this prejudice come from? From me being rejected in the past.
Hey, a prejudice is a prejudice, whether it’s reasonable or not!
@Jennifer. You mean something like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOCAvxLByi8
I’m prejudiced against arsonists, rapists and murderers. I know they’re probably mostly decent folks who just have a funny way of asking for help, yet I can’t but discriminate them. If that makes me a minority hating bigot, so be it. Perhaps the problem might be solved by segregating them into places with bars in the windows. Just for their own security, of course…
I work in a DV shelter in rural northwest Georgia. We still talk about prejudice a lot because our shelter serves all races of course. Being a young white girl with too much attitude and too little understanding of presence, I sometimes catch unimaginable hell from people concerning whether or not my actions are completely fair/perfect/ready to be judged by anyone who wants to pay more attention to me but isn’t willing to admit they admire me.
It took me a year to figure out why this kept happening to me because I’ve got the most fair outlook anyone could have, I’ve been called “white trash” enough times to get comfortable with it, and I’ve got so much Cherokee blood in me that my ethnicity isn’t even decipherable. And I’m a lesbian, so … I’m desperately trying to achieve a totally fair living space for our guests at the shelter.
It used to make me upset when I got hit with that accusation. I wasn’t defensive, I was just plain hurt by it. But … somehow I’ve learned to be comfortable disagreeing and standing my ground. Although I’m certainly not the slightest bit prejudice, I am brave enough to talk about why we keep returning to that mindset, and I’m willing to learn how to clear everyone’s minds of their doubts.
I dislike bullies if that’s a more direct answer to your question. People who exploit weaknesses leave a pretty nasty taste in my mouth.
I guess you would say that I’m prejudiced against bigots, bullies, and name callers. I can’t remember when I have not thought people who are bigots or are so prejudice they are blind to all things good were just plan stupid. Bullies I usually pity and feel sorry for they are so insecure they have to pick on other to feel like a person or feel like someone. Name callers well they are usually in the same class with the bully because they are usually one and the same.
great video. My sister used to work at a high school that was tough and inner city. Kids would dress up like gangstas and pretend they and their little posse were bad guys. She’s tough broad and was fearless in dealing with them. She reminded them that if it walked like a duck and talked like a duck that people would think they were a duck. Other really BAD GUYS not posers would too!
i’m prejudiced toward “oreos” or “coconuts” – biracial people or people who are brown on the outside, white on the inside, etc. i assume they are like me and have a good sense of humor about always being an outsider.
I’m prejudiced against people who refuse to at least consider the other side. Raging evangelical or raging atheist, if someone insists that their POV is the only legitimate one, I’m going to be severely annoyed.
Show me a middle-aged, grumpy person who thinks I have crap for brains, and I’ll show you someone I can work into a smooth puddy with just a bit of emotional elbow grease.
I don’t know where I got this talent from. I was not well liked by any adults in my family, so maybe it began as overcompensation.

I automatically think any guy wearing those penguin jeans, where they have skinny legs and the crotch at the knees, must be an insecure moron who is so desperate to fit in, he never bothered to look in the mirror to see how asinine and unattractive he looks in them. I was just at the mall the other day, and those stupid pants really irritate me. If my daughter ever brought home a guy who is wearing those pants, I will immediately hate him.
