Semantics, Google And How We Learn
“You should always go to other people’s funerals, otherwise they won’t come to yours.”
–Yogi Berra
When you’re learning astrology your best subject is yourself. The reasoning behind this is the fact that it is ourselves we may know best. You can think you know another, and perhaps you do, but there are more variables involved. Direct observation (of another) is helpful but is no substitute for direct experience (within yourself). I find it helpful when talking about what I “know” and listening to what others posit to use the rules of court for admissible testimony and questioning. “Objection, your honor, conjecture!”
So when you read an astrological description of something in your own chart it’s much easier to decide if it has merit. Does it ring true? That’s important if like me you like to Google astrological questions. Sure I have my own take on whatever it is, but sometimes it’s good to look for someone else’s perspective. There’s so much out there, some good, some bad, some weird.
If you’re going to Google for information it’s important read with discrimination. One way to do that is to scrutinize the language used. Is their word choice accurate? Sure this is semantics, but sloppy word choice can reflect sloppy thinking or communications. Check to make sure the terms used agree. One big mistake I see in astrological descriptions is using the wrong verb for the planet. The Moon feels, needs. Venus likes and wants. Mars acts. Mercury thinks, smells, hears, processes. When someone writes, “Mars feels…” I stop right there. If they’re not accurate in this regard I doubt their conclusions.
Is Mars involved in feeling, does its position affect feeling? Of course! All our parts interact and impact each other. The way we act affects how we feel. But if someone doesn’t communicate accurately how can you trust what they say? How do you know what they really mean?
Another common problem to look out for is something that is too specific to be true universally. For instance I Googled “Moon square Venus” and got a description that stated “tradition and history don’t interest you.” Well I have this aspect with a Capricorn (Saturn) Moon and an 8th house Aries Venus. Capricorn uninterested in tradition? Aries uninterested in war (much of history is about war)? Pffft.
If you’re interested in figuring out how YOU learn and want to fine tune that process the primary planets to investigate are your Mercury, Saturn and Jupiter. Mercury describes how you think and use your senses. Saturn placement represents your relationship to rules and authority and the particular type of wisdom acquired through age and experience as well as that which is passed down. Jupiter is philosophical and experiential, in the moment, in the body learning. Figuring out how you learn is a great way to maximize your astrological self-education!
How critically do you read astrological descriptions?

Sadge’s are athletic, hahahahahaha. I once broke my foot while sitting on the floor. My mercury is in Sadge and my neptune is in libra. My inner ears are messed up bad, I have no sense of balance and I a suffer from vertigo and wear hearing aids. Athletic~NOT!
“it’s good to look for someone else’s perspective.” YEAH!!!
great article

Wow… This is really great.
I am very critical before I take in information as gospel.

Then again sometimes I don’t see things as they are.

As a student of linguistics, I agree with what you say. Semantics and language in general play a profound role (actually shaping our thought processes) in our everyday lives. And you are right when you say that the verbs are key to understanding ourselves and others better.
Even something that most people don’t understand is the power of suggestion through presuppositions found in our verb choices. As a magician, I carefully craft my scripts based on what I want the audience to experience and not just believe.
Great post, Satori!
Be Blessed!!
Wow Satori! Excellent point! When I first started reading about astrology I was all bumfuzzled up because of some of the descriptions I found online. For one thing, many of them are way to generalized. But what you mentioned is key and I never thought of it that way before.
sheesh, I can never write much in response to what you say cuz you always leave me thinking
Thanks for that!
I only take online descriptions lightly.
I was told I would be good at real estate. Worse thing I ever did to myself!
lol Tam!!! “Worse thing I ever did to myself!” =D Sorry it went that way.
& yep… I use myself as a barometer. If anything sounds off key, I’m gone. It really IS the only way you can honestly make the call.
Satori,
I appreciate the focus on the ‘verbs’ in a piece of writing. Affixing action to the planets when I read something new, I nearly always bounce it against a writer I’ve come to trust over the long-haul then, see how it applies in me.
This is my favorite:
“Your ability to relate to others with warmth and friendliness is blocked. Your sour disposition may cut you off from social interaction. You have few close friends since others find you cold and unresponsive. You feel inhibited and self-conscious, and often have difficulties in marriage or finding a suitable spouse.”
Saturn sq asc *IS* my least fave aspect of mine right now but come on.
[libra sun sextile jupiter and sadge mars (which trines jupiter)]
Starting out was rough. It all sounded so point blank which was why it was important for me to read alot of different sources. Reading about transits was good because I could see how an astrologer could arrive at their take on the transit even though it wasn’t exactly what I was getting. I found out that astrologers are human too and the information comes from their individual experiences. But heavy trashing is always a turn off. It really says more about the writer than anything else.
It’s stange. I have a way of bookmarking info in my head somewhere unbeknownst to me at the time of imprinting. Somehow it pops into focus later down the line when I am ready to process it. And it is always great to get an aha on the spot.

I balk at descriptions of Venus in Gemini being the ultimate sluts of the zodiac. Or living so much in our heads, and not actually *feeling* much of anything. Calling us liars and cheaters.
I don’t know. I’m very sleepy, sorry.
