Hard Aspects, Difficult Energy And Free Will
“When you hang a man you better look at him.”
–Clint Eastwood, Hang ‘Em High
Times are tough, tougher for some than for others, markedly. Yesterday in the salon a woman was sitting with foil on her hair. I walked by with the trash and she stared at me, followed me with an intense gaze. I smiled at her and she just stared. Any number of things may have been going on with her, most of them benign, but I noticed and I noted. As I walked to the dumpster Clint’s line from Hang ‘Em High popped into my head: “When you hang a man you better look at him.”
It’s such a small thing but when people are stressed small things can take on a greater significance. Mars is squaring Neptune. Your actions may be misinterpreted. Be aware. Be aware of the signals you’re sending. A stare like that in a bar could get you in a fight. And I will remember. It makes me suspicious of her because her actions were covertly aggressive and unreadable (Mars Neptune).
Last night my son checked out at a store and shoved the change in his pocket. He got out to the car, pulled out his change and realized the gal had given him a five rather than a one. He knew if he went back and tried to rectify the situation he might be looked at with suspicion, but he has integrity so he went back. I’ve met a lot of people who would sell their integrity for four dollars, and I remember that fact indefinitely.
The cashier was very relieved. She had realized her mistake immediately after he left. Had he not returned she would have remembered him, and not in a good light. He did it for integrity’s sake, but it’s also a good lesson in human relations. People remember how you act. They remember how they perceive you in a given moment and it colors the way they see you and treat you. Be mindful of your actions, especially now.
Do your actions reflect who you think you are?

I should mention there was another woman in the salon at that same time. when I walked by she looked up from her book, met my eyes and smiled at me. I will remember her as well.
I try to remind myself of this. I was thinking today how much I have appreciated Elsa’s blog and her circle here for upholding the value of acting with integrity.
As for my actions reflecting who I am…yes, for the most, I think they do.
Thanks Satori I really need to read this and reflect. Again thanks!
Your son did an honorable thing & it comes from good parenting – WAY TO GO!
thank you! it comes from within him as well. however, I do remember when he was two, taking him back inside the Target store to pay for the candy bar he dropped in the bag. he apologized to the cashier too.
Ughh! I have so much to say about this, but I’m getting lost in translation here. Need to think about this a bit more. Thanks for the post though, Satori!
Yes they do. Good on your son! I’d do the same. The only money I keep is money I find on the ground with no obvious owner.
so funny. for about two weeks i kept accidentally stealing things. (it stoppped about a week ago.) in all cases i went back, explained, paid, etc. i was met by shock and surprise. odd, that.
(and yes… it is possible to accidentally steal something.)
“when people are stressed small things can take on a greater significance”
Agreed. I see this dynamic more and more.
BTW, talking with my dad the other day about similar instances to the above examples and we were remarking on how cheaply ($10) some would sell their integrity…
Then it occurred to me and I said that they had probably sold their integrity long ago, so they didn’t care how cheaply they sold it for now.
This is so timely. I’m feeling crunched and scowling, which isn’t my usual nature. I’m forget how that translates, though! I’ll be more mindful tomorrow. Thank you! and my coworkers thank you, too.

Yes, I think so. I’ve been more mindful lately of how I treat others and allow myself to be treated. I do fail once a day during my commute since I cannot seem to control my irritation but I’m working on it.
Yesterday, I found a Peet’s (like Starbucks) card in our copy room. I had an idea on who the owner was so I returned it to her. Her response, “You could have just kept it.” My response, “But it wasn’t mine to keep.” Her final words were “You’re really honest.”
You made remember a similar situation. I had 4 of my Kids at the store with me one night and a full basket if groceries under the chart was cat food or maybe it was dig food but either way the cashier missed it in the chaos. I got to the car a realized it and drug the protesting kids back in with me. They were frustrated and tired and didn’t understand why when we were broke we were going back into pay I tried to explain it would be stealing to not go back. I hope the message stuck and they remember me with integrity and hopefully will make the same choice if ever in the same situation. If we don’t set the bar who does?
