Taurus Moon Gives the Perfect Tomato

Hopefully Coherent Ramblings

I was talking to Jason last night about relationships and we got onto the topic of elemental communication and how someone can be telling you something (with their words, with their actions) but if they aren’t speaking your language, you may tune them out.

It made me think about the time my best friend gave me the tomato.

She’s a Cancer with a Taurus moon. She is notoriously “thrifty.” (She has to be, her Sadge rising spends all her money on plane tickets.)

Well, anyway, a couple of years ago I had a birthday party. I had decided to take responsibility for my own happiness at that point in my life and threw myself a get together. I invited some family members and a couple of friends to dinner. I told everyone “NO gifts, please. Your presence is enough.”

My sister, who has Venus in Pisces said that was pathetic and there was no way she wasn’t getting me something. She went on to describe some fake fantasy birthday party where I am left presentless crying in my cake and how she couldn’t bear the thought of it! (Even though she was thinking it.)

Other people brought cards.

Then my friend shows up. She takes off her backpack, reaches inside and pulls out a little bundle of hand dyed cloth. I know it’s hand dyed because I was there when she did it. She made a lot of it for a class. She put it in front of me and said “happy birthday.”

It felt weighty. I undid the simple knot at the top and and let the corners of the fabric fall. It was a single perfect tomato.

“I got a bunch of them this morning at the farmers market.”

“Thank you, it’s beautiful.”

Ignoring the fact that I asked for no presents, the two of us have a history of giving each other modest gifts (except for the time I got her the deluxe shot glass chess set, but I considered that an investment in everyone’s fun. It was 8 dollars on sale. Worth. Every. Penny.) To me the tomato was an expression of our shared values and a celebration of our friendship. I really did appreciate it.

After dinner, after she left, my mom said “What was the deal with your friend and that tomato? That was odd. I think she might have been smoking dope. Who does that?”

Have you ever given/received a very personal gift? What did it mean?

I gave my first cousin, who was a grown married man with kids, a race track for Christmas because he didn’t get one as a child.

He got down in my parents floor and played with it in the middle of everyone.

One of my finest moments.

I <3 tomatoes…

But I'm bad at gift giving =\ even with Venus in Cancer, Cap moon's dominance wants to give something practical over something sentimental..

I would love a tomatoe as a gift! Has anyone seen that youtube video of the kid who got a box of raisins for Christmas? He was ecstatic! This reminds of that.

Lovely post Nota! And I am loving the feel of this New Moon in Taurus too. I’m going to work outside in the garden today, but not too hard. Also going to enjoy spending time with both of our daughters today. What a gift! Peace and Love.

That’s a great gift! It’s simple, and shows love and forethought.

I always try to give personal gifts, often handmade. People rarely feel uncomfortable receiving something handmade, even if the materials cost the same as a store-bought item. I’ve given knitted things, bouquets of plants from my yard, olive oil flavored with home-grown herbs, homemade cheese.

One of the best gifts I’ve received recently was a tabletop vise from my in-laws, as a starter for an amateur metal workshop. I almost cried, bc we were tight on money and they wanted to encourage me. I use it all the time.

Your friend gave you more than the perfect tomato, Nota. She gave you the full Cancer/Taurus experience ~ feeding you and giving you a gift that you could relish with all five senses. She also gave you an incredible memory. Wonderful gift!

Haha your mum! I give edible gifts all the time…Taurus! What a great post.
My cranial sacral therapist just gave me a gift: she told me not to pay for the last 9 sessions. She asked me to do a very specific thing with the money instead. So sweet. She’s an elderly lady, and such a godsend in my life.
It meant I was seen for who I really am.

My hetero-lifemate/bff has rich parents, so I could never buy her anything that she’d be able to purchase dozens of. I quit buying her anything years ago.

I’d recommend her books to purchase, websites to look at, music to listen to, people to meet.

I don’t know. I just didn’t think there was any greater gift in the world than knowledge.

I gave her everything I could to see life and the world with the utmost richness and clarity.

Found this while searching for another older thread, so *bump*

@Nota, I would def get along with your tomato gifting friend. Never really understood why people feel forced to go into major debt over xmas gifts.

When I’ve had the $$$ I enjoy buying really nice gifts for my loved ones. But not having alot of $$$ has taught me how to get creative and I think these gifts are much more personal and in some ways much more appreciated.

Ok….I guess because this is a “blog” and not the boards it cannot be bumped:(

Oh well, I’m an older lady and I have very basic minimal computor knowledge.
