Gaining Education Via Exposure To Different Cultures + Some Depth Thrown In To Make A Meal Of This
Astrology in real life
I don’t know that there is anything more interesting to me than interaction between people from different cultures. Struggling to understand another person’s mindset or on a deeply level, what could be considered to be “in their blood” definitely expands a person.
I hate the idea we should all be “one” like the Borg but don’t worry about it much because I don’t think this will ever be achieved. Human beings are clannish (Moon) just like they are violent (Mars) and spiritual (Jupiter) and have egos (Sun), etc.
My grandfather, Henry, was a triple Capricorn. He had Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Chiron and his north node in Sagittarius and he really taught us that exposure to diversity was the basis of education. In other words, you’ve got to leave your comfort zone to expand yourself and become educated.
Today I am aware that I am Italian and people who are not Italian don’t act and react the way Italian people do nor do they necessarily understand my actions and reactions. I acknowledge that some might not be as deeply rooted in their culture as I am. I really don’t know if this is true, I think it’s debatable.
Your root may be as deep as mine but you may not be conscious of it and I can use my sister as an example. She is nowhere near as identified with the Italian culture as I am, in fact I think she finds elements of it to be repulsive, yet I see her react the same way I do when the knife cuts deep enough.
This stuff is super-relevant with all the Cardinal energy bearing down on Cancer / roots / the 4th house.
Tell us about your connection to your clan…and your feelings about venturing out and away from it.

My connection to my clan is very deep. Familial tradition of wandering far and wide, emotionally and otherwise. So much so that when one of us grows old/senile/forgetful the expression is “wandered in the mind.”
I really love that expression “wandered in the mind”–to me it speaks of our wandering roots.
This is the song I want played at my funeral. My mother used to play it on the record player and to me it is one of the most meaningful songs there are….I have Venus/Mars/South Node in the 4th.

Sagittarius ASC with Sun ruled 9th House.
Oh my gosh, I have so much to say on the subject I wouldn’t even know where to begin.
But I can easily state the astrology, which is Neptune on my IC in Cap, Pluto transiting my IC, Merc and Sun in my 8th house, my Sun & Moon on my progressed chart in the 8th house, as well as pPluto on my Asc.
Basically, my deep ties to my family/family legacy are what help me to expand and become educated.
h, I love Joan Baez and that song! Johnny Cash also has a version and I love it too.
I do idenify with the Italian background I possess but like my parents also said I happen to resemble and act a lot like our one French grandparent and was raised a lot like him. I do have the Italian temper I believe is in the water they drink in Italy. I try to temper it but it’s there.
Yes, some Italian things make me crazy but at least I admit them! I try to fix these things in myself!
Mabel, I love the Johnny Cash version, as well:)
Annalisa Scottish people have a murderous temper. But you know, as long as you don’t cross us, we’re fine;)
4th house Cancer moon; the clan is everything to me. This is tempered by my Jupiter in Sagittarius; I have been out and about; I’m interested in other places, cultures, points of view. However, home and family are the foundation of my life (family includes any loved ones); I will never leave that behind, no matter where I may go. Scots-Irish Appalachian American heritage.
@h: ha, ha! I agree about the murderous temper…..threaten home or family and you get pulverized
Fourth house moon conjunct pluto/uranus. Very strong familial foundation like Demelza said. Very strong tie to the land.
Facebook menagerie that is hysterical. Venus in the eleventh house.
The zigzag crossings of my life are perfect imagery for the deep roots of my Island clan. Hawaiians and the rest of my island-bloods have been voyagers … I remain that as well. My 10th house S Node stellium in Scorp and 4th House in Taurus plant my roots deep … and I dig ‘em up over time to make sure I haven’t missed anything:O
I love that journeying is part of my nature … I thought I would ‘fix’ that at one time, but see I’ll always be on the road or ‘wandering in the mind’@ h I LOVE THAT EXPRESSION!! Home is important to me with that Taurus N Node and it’s all that time digging and expressing between the S Node and North that gives such an education!!!
It’s hard for me to say, because I am a first generation immigrant who has advanced considerably in the ranks to the point of having a second generation mindset/do and don’t identify with what it means to be “Jewish”/can’t identify with what it means to be from Soviet Russia/and consider myself, most of all, a “liberal arts kid.” I am very hip to the “Stuff White People Like.” Mostly, I notice that I have trouble identifying with people who I talk to, and I talk to all kinds of people, who have blue collar jobs or are hemmed in by things like, fundamentalist religion, tradition that makes them pick who to marry, and tradition that places elders above them or keeps them doing things that don’t make them happy in a way they can’t change. Unfortunately, sometimes I am jarred by people who like to stay home or can’t do anything on the weekends, don’t ask me why.
When people find out I’m from Soviet Ukraine, they either expect me to speak Ukrainian, which I don’t, or “of course you drink vodka, you’re from Mother Rrrrussia,” or oh, you must love borzois like in Tolstoy/understand Bulgakov, or eat kishkes because you’re Jewish. I don’t identify with people who have the dough to just travel and bum around, nor with those who visit their parents only two times a year. At the same time, I can’t own that Woody Allen Jewish quality. My family likes My Big Fat Greek Wedding for reasons they don’t verbalize, and I can jive with the similar cultures like those of the Chinese, Indian, and (a little bit) Americanized Italian friends we have. Though Americanized Italians are different.
I guess I identify with Russian Jewish transplanted slightly out of place of liberal arts kids. Yep, the liberal arts, that’s my clan.
the scotch and irish definitely come out (there’s LOTS of aries in my family) not so sure about the french. but they were mountain french… border people…
I moved away from the clan as a child, but it’s always there and it’s my root and insides. I have always said diversity and tolerance are my flags, but it helps to know where I come from and how I was raised so that I can freely learn about others.
My grandma told me that our last name has the zodiac sign Cancer…naturally I’ve always derived a lot of comfort from my last name and my country.
I have sun in the 9th and moon in 11th, and pluto in 4th.
My clan is part appalachian and part cajun. Both elements put a high empahasis on family being a big part of everything. You go to the hospital and the clan goes. You get married, the clan comes. You get a new house, the clan blesses it for you. (using this word clan is funny because we usually call them the mafia)
It is an interwoven unit that spans many generations. At the moment, I’m working on building another branch that will probably function pretty independently from the original clans on both sides.
Funny as I was reading this Headline News had a story about how Northwestern University has released a study on how schools today are actually LESS diverse than they were 20 years ago. It’s all economic of course. Poor kids (brown kids) all live near each other while middle class kids (white kids) tend to live near other rich kids. Instead of bussing kids in, which is more expensive, “neighborhood” districts are observed so nobody interacts with each other. Interesting stuff.

Just reading through my FB page is an exercise in diversity and I love it. Sometimes it really cracks me up, because I have such a hodgepodge of people I’ve known and interacted with over the years. I’ve lived in rural backwaters, suburbs, and major cities and feel fortunate for these experiences. I’ve been exposed to quite a bit of diversity, and not only in terms of gender, culture, sexuality, religion/spirituality, education, ethnicity, race i.e, the standard indicators of “diversity” as the term is currently understood. I wouldn’t have it any other way. I like to think it helps me out in terms of balance and perspective.
