I was talking to my husband last night about, Phil Donahue, primarily. I used to watch his show regularly and really enjoyed it. This is due my Libra. I love discourse!
I liked, Phil, a Sagittarius. While his views on various topics were always known, he allowed others to express their beliefs and provided them an incredible platform or forum for this. He’s the one who who launched talk shows and I was enamored with him because I just love discussing things.
Oprah came next and I have to say that she blew, Phil out of the water. She was fresh and somewhat coarse and I loved her show too. Phil himself said she was incredible. She was really the next generation and I think, Phil showed a lot of grace with his remarks and actions which was not surprising. He’s a real Sagittarius archetype in that he is truly high-minded.
So I watched these shows for years but my interest in and admiration for someone who can present issues and opinions that are controversial goes back much further. It all started for me with, Andy Rooney on 60 minutes.
Now I think, Andy Rooney has lost his mind but back in the day… I am talking 35 years ago, he was really good at getting people thinking and talking. He’d come on 60 Minutes and in 60 seconds he would express his opinion on something and really provoke an emotional response.
There were some failures on the talk show circuit. Maury Povich and Jerry Springer come to mind and there were others who were just plain cheesy and/or lacking. Setting that aside though, I loved these shows and the celebrities who hosted them and I wish I still did but I don’t.
I hate talk shows these days. It’s all bitching, posturing, intolerance, pontificating, low-ball… ugh. We’ve the art of discussing things of import. The ass of Lindsey Lohan is not important, see?
I thought I’d write this to expose my roots and my values and give you some insight into what drives me behind the scenes of this blog. I just want to have a place where people can gather and exchange their ideas. A place where people can take some energy… and leave some of their own.
A lot of you help me with and I am deeply grateful. Thanks for 10 years of support!

I grew up on this show! (My mother was a fan and I became one)- always had a big crush on him too – I can still see him running around with that damn microphone – so lanky.
All that aside, happy anniversary!
WOW… Happy Anniversary!
You ARE the Donohue of online astrology! Love him, love you! Cheers!
Thank YOU, Elsa! And congratulations!
Interlocution is a lost art. Discourse, dialog. We all HUNGER for meaningful human interaction. We have friends, or most of us do, and as we live more and more of our lives on line, we seek similar venues for congregating with friends. I’m reminded of the “bar” theme “happy hour” thing that happened here a few months back on this blog. In many ways, what this blog provides is a gathering place for people with common interests to share ideas and be social.
The immense popularity of Facebook and even, yes, ghasp, craigslist personal ads and on line dating services, points to the need/desire/want to communicate with others when we are alone, turning to our virtual lives and virtual friends. This blog is different in that it is content based. You can’t have discourse without a topic, without a scope of conversation. Message boards underneath articles are one thing, but posing a question to a group of people, as if you’re in the room with them, is another entirely.
This blog is a really high level of human interaction on line, and I’m impressed by the personal, cordial, respectful way things are written here. People have identities on here, so you aren’t as likely to be a jerk and mouth off and hide behind anonymity. Rather, there’s a community of people here, who participate more or less, and get to know eachother’s stories. It is refreshing to have a network with which to discuss some of the most important issues in life with people. And you can do so at your leisure — the text is always here, the content is always here. You go to the grocery store, do errands, work, live your life, but you can come to this website at your leisure and add and read and enjoy as time allows.
The choice of content you find important/interesting (star du jour’s ass may be interesting to some, we have discussed such things on here too) is up to you. But there is a general level, standard here at this blog: we aren’t going to be assenine, and if you are, don’t be surprised if you get called on it post haste.
I am thankful for this blog. Lots of entertainment, good insights and discussions. Hope this and blogs like it continue in the future.
Cheers to the interlocutrice Elsa and all who write/contribute content!
I miss those days too and totally agree that talk shows have since gone down the toilet. I hadn’t thought about it until you posted this, but this blog does remind me of those earlier days of interesting discourse, and I for one am very grateful! Thank YOU, Elsa and congratulations on 10 years (and counting)!
Just in case, I wasn’t the only one that had to look up interlocutrice…
interlocutor
1) a person who takes part in a conversation
2) (Also called) middleman the man in the centre of a troupe of minstrels who engages the others in talk or acts as announcer

Happy Anniversary Elsa !!!!!….and many moorrre lol
sorry if that post duplicated ….sighs ( any wonder i lurk ) falls back in a dead faint
Can’t say what I feel about this blog any better than krustallos has… so I say ditto! No wonder I feel so at home here. People who remember and liked Phil Donahue are my kind of folks. Do you remember the show where he and Marlo first met… and she said, with stars in her eyes, “you’re a very nice man…”?? And in true Sag fashion, you could tell by the expression on his face … he just melted. And the rest is history… so romantic. *sighs*
Happy Anniversary!
norah, I saw that show with Marlo too and we talked about that last. I also read his book and he so bewildered when he found himself dating after a divorce. He said he would go out with a woman and then come back to her house and she’d play her answering machine messages and there would be other men on them saying, see you on Tuesday! He didn’t know if he was old fashioned or what but he just felt hurt!
Thing is, I knew women back then who would do that, very deliberately. Matter of fact they would save an old message for this purpose or even have a male friend call and leave a message so they could communicate that the man they were on a date with had competition. I was on Phil’s side here and really happy to see him with Marlo who he said rescued him… obviously.
My family lived in Dayton, Ohio when I was a kid and that’s when and where Phil was just starting to break big. My Mom worshipped him. So he’s my original perception of a media icon. And those early shows are how I visualize talk TV. Nothing too flashy, still small enough to be a little weird and a guy running around with a mic.
This blog definitely fills a conversation void for me. When I find myself spending a lot of time on here, I remind myself that there are people who actually know me who might appreciate a phone call from me. But I’ve gotten really selfish with my time. I talk about stuff on here that my friends and family aren’t interested in.
Thanks for this forum, Elsa!
Now when someone disagrees with someone they call them a moron,..or worse. They wave their hand to dismiss the person completely… or worse.
Life used to be a lot more interesting before it became black and white. There used to be nuance and it was actually possible to make a point.
Nuance. What a great word.
Unfortunately, I think most talk-show hosts these days come with an agenda attached. And you never got that from Phil. Even Oprah gets a little too Oprah-centric for me.
I’m not sure when nuance went out of vogue, but today it’s all about shock and diva drama. The popularity of rap music absolutely stuns me, as does Michael Jackson, Rhianna and others. And these people are truly talented, so what a waste that they have to add shock and baseness to their acts. There are entertainment exceptions..The King’s Speech for one.. I can’t believe it got an R rating for language, used in a context totally inoffensive and appropriate… while any 2 year old can see and hear the most horrendous stuff on a daytime talk show. The King’s Speech to me was a beautiful depiction of nuance. So thank God it’s still out there, here and there.
Happy anniversary
I’m grateful for all the knowledge and conversation on this blog – it enriches our lives! Congratulations on 10 years!
I remember Phil too and watched him although I was young. I think in a lot of ways Jon Stewart is like Phil was back in the day. Phil, like Jon, is left-leaning but moderate and had the wisdom to be open-minded. Jon, like Phil, is also a Sag. It’s kind of sad that Jon, a liberal Jewish comedian is one of the few voices of moderate centralism in the media in our crazy, messed-up, country. He calls it as he sees it – whether it’s a Tea Party mishap or Obama. I have respect for his ability to cut through the b.s (again like Phil) of the situation and see if for what it is. And you know what? He’s usually right.
Happy Anniversary!!!
Blessings !!!
Dick Cavett was great back then too and even Jack Paar and Johnny Carson!
I stopped watching them years ago, but I also liked donahue. I used to watch him on MSNBC, as well, when he had hos show there.
