I mentioned in my last post that a few years back I went through a mystic Judaism phase. The more I thought about it, the more my mind drifted back to Aaron, the man who inadvertently sparked my interest in such a field of study.

A little astrological background first… I have Venus in the Third House (among other things.) I have this tendency to court knowledge sets. I find myself fascinated with a man when he knows something I don’t know. I express my love by devouring the subject so that we may have more to converse about. On the other side of that coin, I can quickly loose interest once my curiosity is sated, i.e. I get interested in something else.

I was working in a coffee shop in east Dallas. This was the in between period where I had just come back from China, before I decided to go back to school. I was living in a minuscule garage apartment in the Little Forrest Hills neighborhood and I rode my bike everywhere. I thought I was an artist.

Aaron was a semi-regular, Americano, no room. An actual Artist. He was a photographer/ found object sculptor by day, surgical assistant by night. Total Scorpio.

He came in one day in a fit manically flipping through a copy of D magazine. “I can’t find my friend!” He said that a friend of his was supposed to have been mentioned in an article, but he wasn’t sure which one or why. All he had was this little sliver of information and he wanted it confirmed.

“What’s your friend’s name?” I snatched the magazine and started scanning the pages. Somewhere in the middle, there he was. “So-and-So says ‘We go to Monica’s for the salsa.” or something trivial like that. I don’t remember exactly.

“You can help me!” He shrieked as though he had found some mythical figure in accordance with the prophesy of a fantasy adventure. Aaron had a dramatic personality. His Leo moon did nothing to tone down his Scorpio intensity. “I need you. When can you start?”

“What are you talking about? I have a job.” I gestured at the whole of the coffee shop.

“I’m trying to get my life in order. I had this other girl helping me, but she was useless. She wanted me to use these…” he turned his hands upward and made creepy crawly fingers like the legs of a marooned cock roach upside down on a floor. “…these paper clips! You don’t understand, they were horrible!”

Aaron had a habit of asserting that you, the listener did not understand.

“What exactly is it that you want me to do?”

“Look, I’ll give you money. Just come over. I have these files. They are my life! I need to get them in some kind of order so I can die!”

Aaron was so enigmatic to me that I agreed to take a stab at his “files” out of sheer wonder. What might they contain? What secrets could I learn from this clear master of personhood?

He scribbled his number on a slip of receipt paper and told me to call him when I got off.
