Dixie’s Daily Tarot, October 17, 2010: Professional Tarot Readings Frequently Asked Questions
Notes on Getting a Tarot Reading
Folks getting Tarot readings have had some great questions for me! Some answers are specific to how I work, but many are applicable to anybody getting a professional Tarot reading. So I thought I’d share them in case they’re helpful to those considering a professional Tarot reading for themselves.
- How much information should I give? Share as much or as little as you like. I can work with anything from "General reading, please" to "Here’s my convoluted mess–can you help?" The amount of detail makes no difference in my ability to tune in. The more specific your question through, the more specific the answer. If you really want a particular question answered, best to be clear about it so your reader can be sure to request the exact information you want.
- Do you need birth data? No. Some Tarot readers do request birthdates for astrology or numerology work, though. While you’re very welcome to discuss transits or other astrological issues in your readings, I do not read charts in conjunction with my Tarot work. Satori, Nota, and of course, Elsa are all highly skilled astrologers; if you’re interested in getting your chart done, you can’t go wrong with any of these ladies!
- Does it matter how I ask the question? Yes and no. Constructing questions properly is very important in Tarot work. But as the reader, it’s my job to help phrase your questions in a way that works for Tarot. So beyond being clear about what you want to know, you don’t need to worry over this.
- Can I ask about other people? I will not do a reading on a non-consenting third party. You can, however, ask about others in the context of your relationship and interactions with them. It’s your energy I’m connecting with anyway, so the reading is already going to be framed in that context. Questions directly related to you work best.
- Can you tell me what somebody else is going to do? No. Just like astrology, Tarot cannot tell you exactly how another is going to exercise their free will. Tarot excels at uncovering hidden, underlying dynamics in a situation and bringing important factors to light. We do look at outcomes, but always with the caveat we’re talking about what’s likely provided the energy keeps trending in the same direction as when the reading is done.
- How many questions can I ask? You can ask one question or several. The more questions, though, the less in-depth treatment each gets. I find for a half-hour reading, one question can be covered very thoroughly. Once you get much past 3 or 4 questions, unless they are very closely related, it’s hard to cover much ground on each in the time we have.
- Can I ask for clarification if I don’t understand something? Absolutely! I want you to get the most you can from your reading, and will do my best to make sure whatever we get is communicated in a way that’s accessible and practical for you. That’s my job!
- Are email readings as accurate as phone readings? For me (and most others I’ve heard discuss this), yes. The interaction is a little different but they both involve back and forth discussion. As Nota pointed out, some people prefer email readings to go back and review later. Other people prefer the immediate give-and-take from a phone reading. And people have different learning styles, so different formats suit different people best. I can find no difference in the quality of readings from one format to another.
- How long does it take to get my email reading? I do most email readings within 24 hours, many quicker. When you request a reading, I email you to let you know I’ve received it and give you an idea then of when to expect your reading.
Do I get to see my cards? Yes! I start most readings with a Celtic Cross spread, and photograph your cards before I get started with my free-form/messy personal style of reading. I also may photograph especially important cards occurring in the spread, or extra cards pulled on specific questions or for a take-home message to share with you. - Do you want feedback? I LOVE getting feedback. It’s my favorite part of the process, and helps me grow as a reader, so I very much appreciate people taking the time to share their perspective on the reading. If you don’t want to provide feedback, of course, I totally respect that. It’s certainly not expected. But know you’re welcome to update me on your situation if you’re so inclined. I’m rooting for you!
- Privacy? Nobody has actually asked me about this yet, but it’s too important not to mention: your readings are confidential! If you refer a friend or family member to me (even if you have already chosen to share your reading with them), I will NOT discuss information from our conversations. Please know I take confidentiality VERY seriously, consider your trust sacred, and will do my best never to violate it. (Saturn in the 7th, man.)
Was that helpful? If I missed question you have, feel free to ask it in the comments.
And if you’d like to get your own Tarot reading, I’d be happy to help via Email or Phone.

Hey Dixie,
You might also want to include whether or not you help give advice to create better outcomes.
You know we love your posts! Keep on, keeping on!
Be Blessed!
MagicMark
I’m a Dixie Fan!!! She has given me 2 readings – one on this site and one over the phone. I am hear to tell everyone she is a blessing. Very concise, compassionate, and tells you what you need to hear.
I HIGHLY recommend her for a reading!!!!!
Carole – Excellent point about time zones. And thanks for the question. Rates for email readings are the same as phone – $40 for a half hour reading. I have no clue what the word count turns in to. I can try and look at some I’ve done for an estimate. I know it’s going to be very similar to the length of phone readings in terms of how much is said, because I dictate them instead of typing them.
Mark, yes, absolutely I focus on helping people figure out the best way to use what they’ve got on deck. Some times are easy and some times are hard, but always want to look at doing the best you can with what you’ve got.
AriesSun, thank you so much! I appreciate that.
p.s. I was going to have a regular post today for the column, and post this info separately but ran out of time.
Carole- I have thought about this, and I really don’t want to go back and figure word counts. The right sentence at the right time is worth a hundred pages of prose. The point is getting to what is most needed and that’s what I focus on regardless of how many words it takes to get there.
And yes, I will always provide clarification if someone has questions about a reading.
I’m a Dixie fan too..have recommended her to other people too and all have been amazed by her accuracy…keep on the good work Dixie!!
Carole here…. my question about “how long” as in word count is refering to previous readings I have had else where…. very short like three sentances per quesiton.
Then to clarify was a bit cryptic….like I hadnt paid enough for full explantion – or was supposed to work it out myself…?? quite frustrating.
Also as a budding newbie into tarot… learning as I go along – it would have been nice to know what cards were drawn so I could start to see how the links were made – even is a lot was down to intuition of the reader…. this was not given in the previous readings I had else where.
I am very tempted to book one shortly with you reading others comments
– thanks, Carole
Thank you, redro.
Ohhhh….Gotcha Carole. Thanks for clarifying. Nope, not a couple cryptic sentences from me! I have a mouth, can you not tell? Har! I would say my readings are comparable length to my daily column here. I always include card images an am happy to explain finer points of what we’re doing to those interested in it.

As I am in the UK – phone reading would not work very well with the time difference.
How much do you charge for email and how long reply is email(as in word / page length). If I dont understand answer, can I email back for clarification ??
