Dixie’s Daily Tarot, September 11, 2010: Loving Mars in Cancer
Astrology Meets Tarot is a
Mars in Cancer is another one of those placements that just doesn’t get any respect. It makes me feel compelled to speak up for the other side. While I’m not an astrologer, I am a fan and I pay attention. My dear husband has Mars in Cancer, so I have had long-term opportunity to become acquainted. Today, I asked for help in illuminating the often misunderstood Mars in Cancer.
Today’s Tarot is the Ten of Swords. This version from the Legacy of the Divine is particularly stunning rendition. I think of Tens in Tarot as that void between the end of the cycle and the beginning of a new one, holding both the completeness of what’s been and the birth energy of what will be in tandem. Swords are, of course, the Air element, so we’re discussing how one thinks. Astrologically, this card is associated with the Sun in Gemini. The ten of swords shows up for me both when someone has been heavily betrayed, or when someone’s overreacting. Whenever I see this card, I think overkill.
And yes, the whole overkill thing can be an issue. Because Cancer is so sensitive, even slight attacks are felt very deeply by Mars in Cancer. You may not even have idea you were responsible for one of those swords. Maybe you consider the reaction out of proportion, but you’re not the one with the swords in your back, huh? Be aware that being part of a Mars in Cancer person’s “family”–the inner circle–is a hallowed position of trust. If you want to stay there, never ever take a stab at his soft spots. You’re doing much more damage then you realize.
You’ll often see Mars in Cancer characterized as passive aggressive, and like any generalization, there is some truth to it. That’s certainly one way for the energy to express. I think it most likely to come out that way when the individual is not sufficiently mature, or particularly if Mars in Cancer folks do not feel heard. Mars most often acts more directly. But if the direct way is blocked, Cancer will express indirectly. One way or another, that frustration is coming out. Acknowledge conflict and listen kindly, even when (especially when) your viewpoint differs, and you will have much less trouble with passive aggressiveness.
One of the coolest things about the placement you don’t hear enough about is the loyalty factor. Mars in Cancer will defend their home and their family, birth or chosen, vigorously. The quickest way to rile a Mars in Cancer person is not to attack them directly, but to attack a loved one. When that happens, they pull out all the stops. Furthermore, they will genuinely and deeply care about your safety and security at all times, doing their best to quietly, gently look after you.
The Mars in Cancer man may check to make sure your tires are well inflated, fill your windshield wiper fluid, or remind you about ice on the road. The Mars in Cancer woman will not only feed you well, but also make sure that meal is nutritionally balanced and healthy. In other words, they will act (Mars) to secure your well-being (Cancer), both physical and emotional. Mars in Cancer often expresses love in a very tangible, practical way. As a bonus, Mars in Cancer will generally respect your feelings, having an innate understanding of the role emotion (Cancer) plays in your actions (Mars).
The Ten of Swords reminds us that the pain Mars in Cancer feels is both real and intense, even when it may be (at least partially) self-generated. To successfully relate to a Mars in Cancer native, don’t ever be a wielder of one of the swords. If they are wounded, let them have their time to retreat, heal, and gain perspective. Be sensitive to their needs and clearly express the value you place on all those feelings they’ve got. A Mars in Cancer person who is secure they are heard and loved as-is will be less likely to overreact to small slights or become passive aggressive. Treasure their loyalty and devotion to your well being. Not many people will go to the lengths they will in order to protect you and make sure you’re secure. They don’t commit with their mouth—they commit with their heart and express it by action. That’s worth the trouble to manage, don’t you think?

(waves) Mars in Cancer. Right here. I get stuck quite often and have trouble acting unless I’ve sized up a threat for a good long time!
Mars in cancer here…You’re husband is a lucky man…we are exactly the way you explain it…this reading made me feel great…thank you for that…
I too have Mars in Cancer and I was just amazed to hear myself explained so well. If only others had your insight… Thankyou Dixie
Oh, yeah!!!
Love seeing you Mars in Cancer folks represent! Whatever you’ve got, work it the best you can, you know?
Thank you so much ,i saw me exactly in your description, very much appreciated. I admit i can be passive aggressive ,but only when i allow frustration to simmer by what seems like others discounting my feelings or opinions. As i’ve matured i just give one try at explanation then if they dont get it/me i shrug and keep it moving ,unless its someone important in my life lol .Then i might put a little more effort/me into it
Huh Dixie, chance would be a fine thing! Try loving a Leo sun / steelium with Moon in Aquarius AND with Venus in Gemini, when you have Neptune all over your composite chart in the 12th HA!!
My husband is an Aquarius with moon and venue in fire signs–and Mars in Cancer. Incredibly nurturing and loyal, he makes me feel loved and protected like no other man has before him. The only downside: he is virtually unable to see the truth about some people (family members) and is sometimes manipulated/taken advantage by them. He is getting better about maintaining boundaries by watching me though. LOL.
my ex is aries sun with mars in cancer. but his mars opposes pluto. your description is very accurate, except my ex took this to the extreme and so was very controlling. for example he would use my son against me: if he didn’t like what i was doing, he’d say i was a bad mother and i should think of my son.
i know deep down inside it’s over but he’s still holding on. i still let him spend time with my son because i know how much it would hurt both of them to end their relationship. but my ex would say, “i’m gonna marry you one day” and i’m just thinking nononononononononono!
My Leo guy has Mars/Cancer and is very loving. Soooooo loving, it is awesome! He’ll carry my groceries etc–never been with a guy like this before–an old fashioned gentleman.
Talk about synchronicity, my husband and I were just talking about his Mars in Cancer this morning. All of what you’ve described is spot on with him.
Another thing I noticed – he’s got Cancer on the cusp of the midheaven and Uranus in Leo in the 10th house. He is an Interventional Radiology Technician and loves the patient-care part even more than the technological side. If he is on call and gets called in middle of the night, out the door within five minutes, because in his mind he’s got a family member waiting on the table.
In the same vein, nothing makes him angrier than when an employee neglects a patient and he’s been known to say things like, “Tell me, why did you keep your stroking mother waiting an hour while you showered and applied your makeup?” or “Did you just leave your father alone in that room sedated?” (Is this passive-aggressive?) He is not usually aggressive at work, but he’ll go toe-to-toe in a heartbeat when it comes to a patient’s well-being.
excellent analysis. Mars in Cancer here too! And hell, chrispito *I’d* carry your groceries! LOL
I know you would
Mars in Cancer are also very good at cuddling.
I’d totally cuddle your groceries, esp if you bought some manchego!
lol
I have some goat’s chevre at the moment–and a fresh fig spread I made from a local fig tree near my mama’s house. do you want to cuddle that??
actually–i made the fig spread from the figs, not the tree. in case you were worried.
thanks for clarifying about the fig spread. I was worried! Hee (yum)
One of my siblings has Mars in Cap in the 4th house.
I have Saturn in Aries in the 4th house.
My other sibling has Moon conj Saturn in Taurus, bQ Mars.
A few years ago a peripheral ex-family member attacked us – a completely incorrect interpretation about how we were caring for our elderly parents. Not stepping up to our responsibilities, etc.
(For one, the Taurus moon/saturn spent like 100K of his own $$ for 24/7 care so our parents could stay living in their own house as long as possible.)
We all went berserk on her. Our Aries eldest brother just sat on the sidelines watching. LOL. I’ve never seen anything like it since LOL.. I’m cracking up thinking about it.
Thanks so much for this! I have this placement and I feel like we do get a bad rap- too emotional, moody and too sensitive. This describes me to a tee.I guess I have it really bad because I am a Scorpio and my moon is in Cancer too. But I like being in touch with my emotions! Wouldn’t trade it if I could
jilly that’s wild!
It was like someone pushed a giant red “don’t fuck with my family” button LOL.
Makes me laugh every time I think about it LOLOL.
Thanks Dixie. I’m Mars in Cancer and so is my boyfriend. I’ve always been very happy with my Mars.
Mars in Cancer here, going through a hell and a half in the past few months… I am always touched by what you have to say, but your words were like a balm to my heart today, thank you so much, Dixie.
My Mars is in Cancer & I think it can be quite painful, but that may come from other aspects, I don’t know. Maybe cuz I have Mars conjunct Saturn & Midheaven, or that my Moon is conjunct Pluto in the 12th house.. but it is true, I have weak boundaries, & care about friends & family more than most things. I go through life feeling, so that can be very painful…esp. when you feel people don’t see you as genuine when you really are, or it’s hard to go through a normal world when you don’t feel normal or behave normal.. intuition guides a Mars in Cancer, not logic.. so we don’t always make sense & can piss people off sometimes..
