Dixie’s Daily Tarot, September 6, 2010: Osho Zen Tarot Deck Review
Astrology Meets Tarot
I wound up with this deck quite serendipitously. I was browsing a local metaphysical shop, looking for a new “friend” if one happened to speak to me, and the fella working there was SOOOOOO excited about how great the deck was, I ended up buying it. I swear, his joy at sharing something he obviously loved was infectious. I thought it was a beautiful deck, but wasn’t sure I’d be able to read with it. I actually bought it to ride his happy wave.
It is beautiful, though. I had to give him that. The artwork is colorful and striking. Many of the images Eastern-flavored, using highly saturated colors and some modern day imagery. The pictures are engaging and expressive. It IS the kind of deck you may get just to admire, because the cards are just flat out engaging.
The teachings espoused in the card interpretations are from Osho, a Zen master. Osho himself was quite a colorful character, controversial, but he definitely had some interesting teachings . I was mildly annoyed when I discovered there is an extra major arcana described as “The Master,” representative of transcending the cycle of life and death, illustrated by a painting of (the deceased) Osho himself. This felt overly contrived and self-indulgent to me, considering the concepts within the deck should be enough to introduce his perspective. Y’kno? But it’s easy enough to nix that card if you don’t want to participate.
The suits are Fire, Water, Clouds (Air), and Rainbows (Earth), represented by elemental icons For each card, the companion book has black and white card images, a selection from Osho relating to the card’s meaning, and a less poetic suggested interpretation. (Some of Osho’s selections may require extra consideration if you have little exposure to Zen.) No particular attention is paid to astrological correspondences beyond whatever is inherited by the semi-traditional card associations.
I actually did have it for several years before I learned to read with it, because I was initially put off by the variation from traditional decks. I was concerned I’d have trouble interpreting it. Once I got to know the cards a little better, I found I could indeed get accurate and helpful readings with it. Card interpretations are similar to the Rider/Waite, but sometimes focus on specific aspects or angles of the traditional meanings. Suits are represented by the colors in the diamond icon at card’s bottom, and court cards are designated by their corresponding elemental symbols to make identification easier.
I find messages from this deck to be direct, sometimes on the blunt side. I don’t consider that a criticism, personally. I highly value directness. I also am a fan of Zen—I find freedom in detachment and see gifts in mindfulness. But not everybody feels the same, so bear in mind your own preferences when considering this deck.
Some of the imagery packs a punch, and there are a number of cards that some may consider bleak. Here’s a sampling:
I would recommend this deck for people who like Zen-flavored perspective, prefer straight talk and are willing to put in the time needed to get to know these cards. In return, they’ll return vivid imagery, new perspective, and to-the-point advice.
You like this deck? Anybody read with it?

I think it may have to be the next deck I invest in! I keep becoming more and more intrigued with and in tune to with this deck everyday. When you first started daily tarot on on here, that was my giant shove to get back into it. I saw your osho deck and really liked it, but didn’t want to start back with ‘unfamiliar’ cards. I searched decks on amazon and found the deviant moon deck and fell in love immediately. Needless to say I ended up with a bit of what I was trying to avoid, but the connection to the deck is very much there for me.
Thank you for your wonderfully insightful daily readings, dixie!
p.s. – Is anyone here familiar with the deviant moon deck? Its so hard to find anyone who uses this deck…without wanting to lock it in chest and throw it into the bottom of the ocean immediately after. *sigh* always the oddball, never the bride =P
That picture reminds me of the Baghwan Rashneesh.
I got this deck when my cousin was visiting…It was her deck of choice. To me it is one of those decks that I love to frame up on the wall for the wonderful imagery and energies of the deck.
I do enjoy the readings from the deck as well. it is very to the point and accurate for me. Insights do add the the clarity of the moment and thought forms.
I love my Osho Zen deck. I haven’t had it terribly long, nor have I done much with after a month straight of pulling the same cards, but I’m still excited to have it and read with it. I’m going to do a read for myself tomorrow as part of my New Moon prep.
This deck spoke strongly to me right out of the box. I haven’t directly studied much Zen philosophy, but many other studies I’ve been undertaking for the purpose of self-improvement incorporate Zen concepts. Picking up this deck felt like meeting a new friend with many common interests.
I also love the imagery, even the negative-type stuff. I think it’s very demonstrative of how certain thinking/feeling patterns keep up trapped and unable to experience life fully.
danielle, thank you.
Lupa has Deviant Moon and has said she likes it. I know she’s done some one card readings with it on some of the Tarot threads. this thread has some – http://boards.elsaelsa.com/topic/happy-thursday-tarot-with-lupa
haha, curious wanderer. i know how that goes. maybe you can ask for different cards to review or ask a different question than you have been to get something new.:)
I’m a little different than other readers I don’t know if I would ever try this deck, and I’m not actually that crazy about the Deviant Moon deck either. Maybe I’m a bit more traditional? In fact I don’t find that many decks that I really like…maybe I’m just picky?? lol
Ohmygoodness Dixie, thank you SO much for that link! So very useful.
And thank you snapdragon, for weighing in. Any information or opinions are always very much appreciated =)
Sorry for the delayed gratitude, impromptu labor day trip.

I used this deck a while ago and found it very helpful. I enjoyed the imagery and the interpretations. When I read with this deck I often felt like I ended up with added perspective in addition to more clarity.
