Astrology Meets Tarot

IMG_0034

“People are going to quit getting Tarot readings from me,” I tell my husband with a sigh.  “I keep telling them things they don’t want to hear.”

“That’s not a very good business model,” he says matter-of-factly. I’m married to Captain Virgo. He’s very helpful that way.

Today’s Tarot is Temperance, from the Zodiac Tarot. Temperance is XIV, major arcana. As you may recall, the Zodiac Tarot focuses exclusively on the card’s astrological associations; majors are assigned either a sign or a planet. On those with signs like this one, a place is pictured. As Sagittarius is a mutable sign, the scene is sunset. And of course, what Sagittarius wouldn’t be happy with this illustration of a trip underway?

In traditional decks, we’re accustomed to seeing an angel for Temperance, standing with one foot on land and one in the water (grounded in physical reality, but also attuned to the intuitive/emotional world); in some decks, the angel is depicted as mixing water and fire in the cups. Typically, this card indicates both the idea of restraint and of synthesis of disparate energies. These aspects of this card’s message aren’t prominent in this version, although they are attached to Sagittarius itself to some degree. The Centaur is a half-man and half-human, after all, caught between two natures. And Jupiter’s expansive influence does marry diverse horizons.

The act of reading Tarot is an alchemy much like the angel’s, with one foot on the ground and one foot in the spirit world. You’re connecting to energy you can’t necessarily see or hear or touch, but every bit as real as that which you do. And sometimes what you get in the reading process isn’t sunshine and flowers, much to my dismay. This can be hard. I have a strict rule for any reading I do—whatever I get, I give. I trust the process enough to believe that I don’t get it unless I’m supposed to pass it on. So pass it on I do.

Thing is, sometimes what comes can be harsh. People don’t usually seek out a Tarot reading if the trip is smooth and easy. The call you when they’re in the soup and want a way out. There’s a good chance what they’ve tried thus far is failing, perhaps spectacularly so. Sometimes, it’s just a nudge in the right direction that comes through, which I’m happy to pass one. Sometimes, it’s more of a kick in pants. I certainly don’t take responsibility for the choices someone makes after a reading, but I am going to do my best to send exactly the messages I get. Otherwise, I couldn’t live with myself, wondering if I let them down when I could have helped by sugar-coating the punch right out of their message. If what I get feels like a kick, that’s what I’m going to convey, every bit as solid as I get it.

I’ve got Mars/Mercury. I am very direct. Like my Sag friends, I value the truth tremendously. Because of this, I’ve given folks readings that I know were not easy to get. I deliver without judgment and with as much kindness as I know how, but it doesn’t mean I somehow think it doesn’t sting. For that, I’m very sorry. But I’m also grateful I can manage this, because I think it can be incredibly valuable to get a slap at the right time, and know not everybody can serve this way. I’m willing to be the messenger of an unpopular message, so long as it can ultimately lead to freedom. My desire to make somebody feel good is much less important than being in a position to deliver help.

Temperance would not ask me to abandon honesty or bluntness entirely. That wouldn’t be very Sagittarius, after all! The truth does have the power to set us free. However, I can certainly work on expanding my perspective to further take into account the recipient’s reaction when I’m communicating whatever truth I have on offer. That could make it a little easier. And whatever the message is, of course, always deliver it with love. That’s the only reason to be doing it, far as I see.

Would you rather get harsh advice directly, or with sweetener on top?

This may sound surpricing coming from a Libra, but frankness is much appreciated here. In fact, if it hadn’t been for a couple of unespected expences last month that maxed out my credit card, I would have already got a reading from Elsa and you… Will be in touch as soon as I have this sorted out !

I totally empathise Dixie, it is hard but we know we need to get our own minds outa the way and give what flows through, i just remind myself they ALWAYS get what they NEED,which is not always what they want. I am trying to find a way to work away from my home at this point as clients are quite hot under the collar especially when they arent told that things are gonna go back to how they were or the future isnt now how they’d planned, but we arent god and I trust that being forward whether they like it or not helps them to be forwarned to deal with anything they arent able to change with a better attitude if they choose. Unfortunately many clients, especially newbies who have only just started to seek this sort of guidance because of the troubled times dont realise just how sensitive and caring readers need to be in order to do what they do and that negative reaction hits hard to the core. Healing thoughts to you, lots of us in the same situation and all we can do is our best to serve with integrity. (((dixie)))

Most definitely the truth – my reading with Elsa did not sugarcoat anything, and that was fine.

You can’t change something if you have no idea what you are really dealing with in the first place.

Depends. I’m highly intuitive and I don’t need to be hit over the head with a blunt object to get the point of what someone is saying. I used to live with a man who would play me certain songs to convey how he was feeling and I would ‘get it.’

However I don’t mind some people being blunt–because I can sense it’s their communicating style, and why should I demand to be spoken to just in the way I want? I think my 11th House Uranus/Mercury opposition helps my tolerance level of others’ communication styles.

I think this must be much more difficult (giving harsh news) if you’re reading for someone unfamiliar with you. I’m very certain that you (Dixie) and Elsa both have the purest intentions, and do not pass judgements, and so I would be able to accept what either of you say easier than maybe someone who might not understand that.

A couple years ago when I had surgery and was getting ready to leave the hospital, I still had an IV in my arm. So the nurse had to take it out. It was held in place by huge piece of clear tape around my elbow, like you use for taping packages shut.

I don’t know if she was stupid, high, a sadist, or just didn’t like me, but she peeled that tape off my arm as slowly as possible.

:( That sucked.

Jilly, that’s a vivid image for this question. I think I’ll be seeing it in my head.

Dixie, you did a reading for me a few weeks ago and while it wasn’t all sunshine and roses, it was so clearly right on that I wouldn’t have wanted to hear anything else except exactly what you said and how you said it. Sugar coating would have just diluted the take-home message. I really appreciate honesty and bluntness, especially when asking for advice. I’ve noticed when I feel particularly sensitive to a message, it usually helps to look inside and figure out why I’m so bothered by the truth.

I’ve never had a sweet tooth. Give it to me straight up! :-)

Seriously… I HATE HATE *HATE* it when people do the Sugar First, Then The Message, Then Close with More Sugar thing. Whatever bright brain came up with that piece of con psychology must’ve been a wife beater!!

Set’er up with false ‘love’, beat her up good, then bring her flowers with a smile.

The managers in my department are of that ilk.

Needless to say, many are plotting their escape, and many have succeeded.

‘many’ meaning ‘employees’, of course.

alas, none of the ~managers~ are leaving!

Tell it like it is. If trouble is on the horizon and I get a reading that is all fluffy, how does that help me? Telling is like it is appreciated and professional.

I guess I’m the only one who needs a dose of Neptune every now and then? LOL

((((((Jilly)))))))–I saw a lot of that with my former partner when he was in hospital. They thought they were being nice and instead were just torturing him
(he was a Cap with Mars/Merc/Jupiter in Sag/6th and didn’t need to be “coddled” by a nurse, that’s for sure)

I agree with hydro: I prefer things straight-up, and if it hurts to hear then I delve inside to find out why.

Being rather introspective in the first place (all but one planet below the horizon in my natal chart), sometimes it takes a slap to wake me up to see the outside world. I cherish those who can and will do that for me, even when it hurts, because I understand that in the majority of cases it’s done with my best interest in mind — and when it’s not, I have my instincts to tell me about it. *grins*

True story:
The first time I ever asked E a question for the advice column, I told her she could be as blunt as she wanted and I wouldn’t take offense. It’s five years later and I’m still here and getting consults (now that I have the $). I call her my “favorite kick in the ass.” It’s appreciated. :)

for me, there’s a big difference between tarot & astrology, tho i love both dearly. astrology i find very accurate (w a great astrologer like elsa) but with tarot…well, here’s a question:

while it’s great to be straight forward about something, with all due respect, how accurate are tarot readings? what if the cards are interpreted incorrectly? so then you get the person all riled up or sad, depressed etc. and then it turns out the cards were read incorrectly. (i question horary readings for this reason as well…)

i have a situation now where i could really use good advice, but because the situation I’m in is so raw/delicate for me, and it is mercury is retrograde! so i expect error lol. but curious your thoughts! :)

Dixie, I can tell you that the reading you did for me – blind, knowing nothing of my situation – was not things I didn’t want to hear! You verified exactly what I felt was going on, but didn’t trust myself enough to believe in.

I’d recommend you to ANYone, ANYtime. If I want someone to lie to me, I know any number of people who are better at that than is acceptable in my world.

susan, that’s a great question. i’m writing tomorrow’s Daily Tarot about it. :)

Kristine, thank you very much.
