Dixie’s Daily Tarot, August 29, 2010: Shadowscapes Tarot Deck Review

Astrology Meets Tarot

deathThere’s no argument: the Shadowscapes Tarot, featuring watercolors by Stephanie Pui-Mun Law, is a gorgeous deck. The fantasy style artwork  is captivating and colorful. Each card is a work of art in it’s own right. And it absolutely has my favorite version of the Death ever—a phoenix, after he’s arisen from the flames.  In fact, there are lots of animals in the artwork. Foxes, birds, butterflies, lizards and dragons are favorites. Fairies, fish and owls also abound. There’s magic in every card.

The deck comes with a full-size companion book, over 250 pages. There are sections by Tarot expert Barbara Moore, including the obligatory introduction to Tarot and sample spreads, but most of the book is by the artist.  For each card, there is a full-page black and white image, a poetic narrative describing the scene, and a brief suggestion for interpretation.

While the general meanings of cards ares similar to the standard Rider/Waite, each has the artist’s own focus and the imagery is not necessarily related. In particular, I noticed cards that often feel harsh—such as Death—are less so in this deck. It’s an optimistic deck, I’d say.

There isn’t a particular focus on Astrological symbolism beyond what’s inherent in the Rider/Waite already, transferred with the meaning by default, and no specific mention I noticed in the book. I may have missed something, but it’s definitely not the focus. So whatever connections you may make will have to be on your own.

One complaint I’ve seen about this deck is the size of the cards. They are standard Tarot deck size, but the images are so detailed, it’s hard to see everything. I tend to agree. I’d like to have a larger version, so I could see more of the detail and not feel like I’m missing out on something. But even at standard size, there is plenty to see.

I am not doing full readings with Shadowscapes yet, though. This is the kind of deck I want to get to know . (I was the same way with the Osho Zen deck. Because the cards are unique and highly nuanced, it takes longer to get acquainted. ) I do enjoy working with it, though. It’s so beautiful, you can’t help but gaze on the images and get a little lost in the dream world.

I’d think it an especially nice choice, for Tarot visualization and meditation work.   It has a very dreamy, Pisces kind of feel—good for letting go of the everyday and seeing through the lens of the almost-there. You do get sucked into the fantasy, just enough to see another perspective.

I LOVE the look of this deck! Especially the Death card that you have singled out. I learned long ago not to take Death in the Rider Waite deck so literally. With that card, and the 10 of Swords, I try to view it with a Sun rising perspective (unless the other cards really point otherwise). Using a Phoenix is a genius move in my opinion.

Just Beautiful Dixie… Thanks for showing us, I haven’t seen it before but I’m going to have to search it out now.
I’m generally not into fantasy decks in that way. At the moment I’m learning a new deck “Cruel Thing” by Luciano Vecchio.. (an image of the Page of Swords should show up as my Avatar- haven’t got a pic of the death card- sorry).. which is more my type of deck =) The whole thing is in black, red & white & it took me forever to find it (it’s a Spanish deck).
I can’t use this for most people, it’s a bit scarey, but I love it. Have to be in a certain mood, I find it hard work trying to get my head into a new deck space =)
I’m liking the death card more & more over the years, guess that’s because I’ve had so much practice by now I don’t find it as much of a challenge, but the image you have posted for us pretty much shows HOW I try to explain it. I wouldn’t need to “warn” people they ain’t about to die with this one, for sure! It depicts to me all the positives of the card.
So… now I have a new set of cards on my wish list =) When I finally have Cruel Thing wrapped up, I’m going for Ms. Pui- Mun Law next.
Cheers Dixie =)

Dixie! My hubby and I LOVE your deck! It’s very beautiful, yes, but the fact that it contains such art work and the animal component really attracts both of us to it! We use the Rider/Waite and a renaissance deck. You’ve inspired both of us to get back into it. The reading Lupa did last Wednesday when she pulled a card for us was so spot on and gave us the confirmation we needed to make a major decision about moving 1,500 miles… We both get so much from the Tarot… Glad you read and post as often as you do!

Dixie, thanks for the link. The deck is exquisite! My birth path card is the Lovers. That particular version really speaks to me. Lovely!

Well that’s interesting Dixie. I had also heard the complaint that the deck was small, but I was under the impression it really was a small deck so I wasn’t even considering it. I didn’t realize that it’s actually a normal sized deck. Thanks for the posting, I do love the deck (I had posted a link to this deck back on the thread about being addicted to tarot).

I was watching the deck when they were just prints. Stephanie is really a great artist, and if I’m not mistaken, she had a surge of requests to make the deck available. I’m on the fence about getting this deck. Although I love the artwork, make no mistake about it, I tend not to get watercolor art decks. I like them for a time then give or trade them away.

Just an absolutely beautiful tarot deck. All the ones you feature Dixie are wondeful and each have their own place and feel. I’ve watched some of Lupa’s tarot videos and she features some wondeful decks as well.

I usually have a one deck that I work with the most but its wondeful to have others and tarort readers like you and lupa who introduce us to new ones.

I am particular drawn to this deck, possible due to my pisces rising. Definitely hoping to purchase this one soon. Thanks for the review!!!! <3
