Gosh—I have mothering on the brain lately. Maybe it’s Mercury in Cancer. The issue seems to be cropping up so much in my life, I am not sure what to make of it.

If you keep a Tarot journal, even using different decks, you’ll see the same or similar cards appear repeatedly as you work through whatever’s on your plate. Suits, numbers, or general themes will also repeat. Today, we get the Zen deck’s version of the Queen of Pentacles: Flowering, Queen of Rainbows. I’m glad this Queen’s a friend of mine.

This mother-focus strikes me as utterly ironic. For all my maternal meanderings, I was the never-having-kids-chick who always said, “Kids are no good until they’re old enough to threaten.” Circumstances and choice of mate stepped in long before the biological clock. Now, I have one kid or three, depending on how you count, and a mom who’s getting older freshly settled nearby. But even with an empty nest, I’m somehow connected to mothering on a daily basis.

The Queen is similar to the Empress in many respects, as both represent Yin/Mothering energy. Tarot As a Way of Life: A Jungian Approach to the Tarot presents Major Arcana (e.g. Empress) as part of the Hero’s Journey into individuation. The Fool’s Journey is clearly a Hero’s Journey, after all. Minor Arcana (like the Queen of Pentacles) thus represent practical, everyday applications of the processes described in the Major Arcana. Sort of like outer vs. inner planet transits.

Here, the Queen’s flowing sleeves are full of seeds. They scatter with the wind, and she lets them flow freely, not attending to which goes where. Evidently, this works well, as she surrounded by blooms. She sits atop a Lotus, signaling her purity of intent.

The Queen tells me to share love freely in my daily life. When I direct positive energy outward, all that’s necessary is that I maintain pure intention. What happens afterward I don’t control, but I don’t need to. I have absolute faith that whatever seeds I put forth will land where they need to land. This is an incredibly freeing concept.

When your goodwill offering is completely without strings, demand or expectation, it doesn’t matter how it’s used! There’s no follow-up assignment to doing good. You get the power of that? There’s no anger because your advice wasn’t followed. There’s no upset over being adequately appreciated. Your only jobs are giving your best, and deciding which direction you want to aim your sleeves. You can be truly gracious with others, and you have more to give, because you’re not busy fertilizing your ego. Saturn in Libra approves.
