“I recognize the pattern in this,” I explained to my husband in regards to the book, Five Years to Freedom: The True Story of a Vietnam POW.  “I’m starting to wonder if it might be universal or… er, have you ever heard there are only a certain number of stories in the world?”

“No.”

“Well, I’ve heard that (from HQ a number of years ago). There are only a certain number of stories and they just replay and I don’t know if that is right or wrong but I do recognize the story in this book…  and I recognize it well, I’ve lived it.”

“Yeah, so he’s going to take his pants, he’s patched them somehow and it is his intention to seal off the bottoms and fill the legs with air and then put his head between them and float down the river like that. And he wants to take his stuff with him, his notes or whatever he’s been able to record so he plans to put that in a bundle on his head, tie it on top so the stuff does not get wet as he floats.”

“He’s captured,” I told the soldier, a couple days ago, letting him know where I was in the book, Five Years to Freedom: The True Story of a Vietnam POW. He’s thinking. This guy thinks so he’s in captivity and he thinks he’s going to be there for six months.”

He laughed.

“Yeah, it’s interesting. He’s only been there about a week he decides to put this line way out there, at 6 months. He mentally prepares himself to withstand captivity for 6 months which at the time seems way overblown.  You know.  I guess he thinks he’s going to be in there for a month so if he prepares himself mentally for 6, he’ll be in good shape psychologically and this will be completely deal-able.  He thinks he’s set…”

I am reading, Five Years to Freedom: The True Story of a Vietnam POW which a book by a soldier in Special Forces who was captured and held as a POW. You’d think I’d be interested in reading something like this, I thought I’d be interested in reading something like this but when the book landed in my hands it through me for a loop, unexpectedly and immediately.  I’d tell you why but it was such an assault to my senses, I can’t narrow it down. I am telling you I could write 10 or 12 posts about why I wanted (and tried) to put the book down and I may just do that.

The reason is because this stuff that comes from way out there on the edge is really powerful if you can distill it down. You think you’re not interested but then you become interested because the material has got you by the proverbial balls.
