“Lift Yourself Up Just Like A Dancer”
Outtakes and various other sundries
I love Garland Jeffreys. Some 15 years ago I was driving from the desert back to Colorado after visiting Annalisa and her then husband gave me his tape, Don’t Call Me Buckwheat, which is a masterpiece.
I wound up listening to this one tape the entire way home (15 hours or so). I was that mesmerized by not just the songs but the way there ordered and and various nuance in his voice and the music. Jeffreys is an outrageous talent and while he is a quintessential New Yorker, I did get to see him play live in a dive in Denver about 5 years ago thanks to HQ who haunted his website, saw the concert coming up and fex-ed me tickets.
Just to round out the story things were so bad for me at that time, I quite famously thought I was being sued when Fed-Ex pulled up in front my house. Yeah, I thought I was being served and I opened up the envelope and Garland Jeffreys tickets spilled out and I burst into tears.
As for the astrology, I think it speaks of Jupiter / Saturn energy that dominates the day.

Yeah, he is an incredible performer, I should have mentioned that as well. Frankly, I have never seen more heart on stage in my life.
Edit – well maybe Marcel Marceau.
I don’t know why that song is freaking me out!
… I think it’s a little too close to home. Especially the sense that you’ve got to do it yourself… “lift YOURSELF up.” But man, I tell you, that is a HARD, STEEP CLIMB! Could I really make it the whole way? Am I going to exhaust myself in the process? Everything needs to be so spot-on, and I don’t want to burn myself out.
But then I remember that quote from Ali (“I hated every minute of training, but I said, ”Don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion) and I put in a little work, and I’m already a little higher up…
But this is still freaking me out.
Par for the course, I guess.
Ah, well. Good choice of song. :O)
BTW, that song is at least a little bit Scorpio, too! Digging deep surgery, pulling out the junk, replacing it with something beautiful.
Yeah, the video sort of hurt to watch. When I was listening to this tape on the drive that day,I had a mind picture of people dancing on top their cars – various shots of this all around the world. That was my projection.
They wound up doing something just like this recently – people around the world singing, Stand By Me.
it’s my birthday today and this video is brilliant – what a great start to my day, thank you. An x had sent me a quote about having a vision and living from hope and not fear together with a MAD comic visual of boy sitting in coffin and everyone standing around. Blaa, I felt irritated, but then I saw the brain surgery and all the sh** that we stash in our heads and boy could I relate. I guess it’s a capricorn thing – don’t tell me what to do!…but if you show me then I’m free.

Loved reading your anecdote about how you received the tickets for Garland Jeffreys’ concert! “The Answer” and all of the songs on “Don’t Call Me Buckwheat” (and all of Garland’s other albums) are top-notch – he’s a fantastic singer, songwriter and performer!!!
