“Do you think you’d have loved me if we’d met as kids?” the soldier asked.

“Yes. Oh hell yes, I’d have been all over you.”

“I bet you would have. I’d have got no rest at all because of you.”

“Because of me, what?”

“Well, P, if we met as kids we’d have gone to school together and it would have been great except for when it came to nap time.  Remember nap time? That was always my favorite.  You got to lie down on a towel and sleep.  Boy did I like that.  I liked lying down and I liked the cookie they gave you and the juice in cup.  Remember the dixie cup of juice they used to give you?”

“I do.”

“Well I loved that. It was best part of the day. A cookie!  Dixie cup of juice and then lie down and have a nap. Ahhhh. But you’d have messed that all up.”

“Why’s that?”

“You won’t let me sleep! First thing you’d do is put your towel next to mine, every day. Yep. Every day, there is, P, putting her towel next to mine and now she’s going to want to talk to me. P, I’d say. We can’t talk now. Shh!  It’s nap time.  But, P would say just one more thing.  And I’d say, no, P, no. We can’t talk now, it’s nap time. Can’t we just talk at recess?  It’s nap time now, let’s get some rest and we can talk later.”

“I don’t like to wait.”

“No, no you don’t and that’s why if we’d have met as kids I’d have never been able to enjoy my nap but other than that, it would have been great…”
