Practice, Practice, Practice

Astrology in real life

“This book says it takes 10,000 hours of practice to get good at something,” I told the soldier regarding the book, Outliers: The Story of Success.

“It said the same thing in, Talent Is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else.

“Oh. That must be the new factoid. It made me wonder if I have 10,000 hours of blogging in.”

“You wouldn’t believe it if you did,” he said.

“Believe what? I have probably written that much.

“Believe you are excellent at something.”

I was surprised. “No, it would occur but then I’d forget, I guess. I don’t retain things like that or think about them.”

This morning I broke out a calculator. Turns out I’ve got more than 30,000 hours of blogging in. I suppose the number of hours spent on “astrology” to be incalculable.

The other day I edited my sister and she was shocked. “I know what I am doing,” I said and I guess this is why.

What are you good at? Have you put in your 10,000 yet?

At fire school, they taught us that practice does not make perfect; -perfect- practice makes perfect. Otherwise, you’re just learning to do it incorrectly.

I have one thing I’m good at and have in way over 10,000. Actually, the other thing I’m good at at the moment is being sick. Back to bed for me!

I don’t know, but it makes me wonder how many more I need to clock in order to “be good at” relationships :)

Hadn’t really ever thought about it…though this is the third time on about a month someone has mentioned this book, so I’m guessing I should read it. Over 11,000 hours in the actual classroom, and that doesn’t include teaching my kids things, extra curruicular activities or all of the staff development sessions I’ve taught. Makes me tired just thinking about it.

Intersting,
I have 75,000 hours in my career, maybe I can post that on my resume! =)
Minimun 89,000 in parenting my boys. WOW
I guess I ahve a phd in parenting.
Married 2 years, you do the math. I flunked relationships bit time.
But now I have a goal towards a new life.
10,000 hours.
