Vid and I at dinner tonight:
“How was your day?” he asked, practicing being a man. He picked this up from the soldier.
“It was good,” I said. “I had a consultation that went well, my writing was pretty good and no one shot my son today.”
He snorted.
“How was your day?” I asked.
“Awesome.”
And so it goes. We are a family built for inclement weather. We’re not goin’ down, you can bet on that.

I love how he practices being a grown-up man. I admire it!
Recently I was late to a family function because of work, and my beloved 5 year old niece, mouth full of ice cream, looked up at me with bright eyes when I walked in the door and asked, “how wuz work?” and I almost bawled right then and there. I still think some of the most beautiful 4 words in ANY language, strung together with love, are “how. was. your. day.” When a child utters those words—-I’m mush.
Maureen, I love that story.
