Dora… Her Pills, Her Tricks, Her Home Food

February 26th, 2009 @ 4:20 pm by Elsa

Astrology in real life

Dora is on to all these pills and sick of them. She is on a 2nd round of antibiotics – 10 more days of huge pills and she has become adept at unwrapping the pills from the meat and leaving the pills… wherever.

I was able to combat this for awhile by having Cluck stand nearby and feeding him chunks of meat right next to her which he would hungrily snap up, letting Dora know she better do the same or else. But I think these new pills must taste bad because as of last night nothing would work until…

Until I broke out a nacatamale! Yep, that’s her home food and I even served in in one of those brightly colored salsa bowls to trick her… the pills cut up and shoved into pieces chicken.

This dog maaaan. I am just barely smart enough to manage her.

See her broken arm? I’ve had a broken arm too.

We are both Saturn in Virgo, clever old ladies with broken bones. ;-)

I adore Dora and also love all animals. Avoiding pills is a sign of intelligence isn’t it? She is a special soul and is fortunate to make her family with you. God bless!

Did you try peanut butter? I hand my dog pills wrapped in peanut butter and just make her swallow it while holding her mouth closed. Then she has PB aftertaste.

….or cheese. Mush up the cheese and pills into little balls….Thank goodness you don’t have to give pills to a cat! THAT is the worst. Ugh.

I know she doesn’t like them– it reminds me when I used to have to take my son for all his vaccinations as a baby and how I hated to see him cry and be in pain– I used to try to concentrate on dying babies in Africa and how their mothers would be astounded that I suffered instead of rejoiced that I could give my son the drugs and medical care to keep him be healthy and well.

She has good care and the advantages of a family and her food preferences taken into consideration, so it’s good that she’s where she is. She couldn’t be in better hands. Even if she can’t be healed completely, I am sure her pain is alleviated by the loving care she’s getting.

I am sure it makes a difference. Even though.. :(

Peanut butter works with my dog, but he’s a smart little Jack Russell so I have to use a LOT or else he’ll suck the peanut butter off the pill and spit it out. ;-)

I have avoided commenting on Dora’s illness because it is just so sad and painful. I am very sorry she is dealing with all this Elsa and that it is making you feel the way you are feeling.

It is kind of like what do you say to people that have lost a loved one or the ones trying to prepare.. you just feel like god maybe best not to say anything. But I have found with me, that is just feeling powerless to make it better and a huge fear that commenting might make someone feel worse. I hope you get what I am trying to say :/

The avoidance is because of all the animals I have loved and had pass on for all the different reasons. It just never gets any easier but I am so glad Dora has a loving family as she does. Hugs to you ALL.

On the pill deal, I have found that after all the brats (cats and dogs) get smart with the hidden pill or pieces of, the best thing is just the pop it method. That means a very short fingernail on the index.. open mouth with other hand and pop it at the back of the throat just past where our uvula is and bingo.. they swallow by reflex.

I had an elderly cat who needed a ton of antibiotics too and was really smart about avoiding the whole mess.. eventually I just had the vet show me how to give a shot and he gave me the antibiotics to give her via injection–it’s not too hard and it was so much less aggravating to Merlin that the awful pills.. it only took a minute and didn’t even appear to hurt–and he got all the drug into his system.. the vet gave me some syringes/needles — its way easier than it sounds and made all of us much happier!

Just a thought.. HI ,DORA BABY!!!!!

Butter works very well, too. My late lamented dog thought taking a pill was a treat (I also hyped it up)!

Thanks for all these ideas. She won’t touch butter or peanut butter unfortunately. :(

At the moment I still have nacatamales so we’re getting by.

I tried the pop it in her mouth – hold it closed but neigther of us liked it that much. Not that it won’t come to this because I know it might which means I will get better at it.

Also thanks for the antibiotics by shot info – that;s good to know.. :)

last time my cat needed antibiotics, they were able to give her a shot that lasted a few weeks. it helped SO much not to need to give her medicine in addition to her other issues.

I’m thinking: since nacatamales work, is there any other “home food” you can make her?

Have you tried putting meat into a food processor, then sticking the pill in it? You could do it with cooked meat, but you would need something to act as a binder… perhaps a touch of gelatin… I don’t know if raw egg would be considered safe for her in her weakened state.

I have a suggestion. crush the pill, mix with watery gravy, suck it up in one of those oral med droppers and then do this that I found on some website:

“you can use an eye dropper inserted behind the last tooth in your dog’s closed mouth, and squirt it down his throat, forcing him to swallow.”

med dropper… thanks, did not think of that and may have to resort.

Right now I am cooking her (us) a crockpot full of shredded beef!! :)

Damned dog. :-)

Dora is sick on the antibiotics. I realize we may be in DENIAL but we just don’t think this dog is dying. Dying from having to eat 30 pills a week that make her puke maybe. Dying from having thermometers in her butt.

Very relieved the soldier will be here tonight and he can take a look at her. Somethin’ ain’t right in the milk.

I am telling you if this dog really is dying (seems unlikely with a healthy appetite and a skip in her step), I am ruining what life she has left giving her pills that obviously taste like poison and make her puke.

And no her puking does not mean she is dying, Dora pukes pretty routinely and always has from what I hear.

Anyway it doesn’t matter anyway, she will not eat these new pills, they taste horrible, it’s obvious.

Hmmm. Have you considered finding a naturopath and/or chiropractor who will attempt to treat her? I know my chiropractor will adjust his patients’ dogs from time to time…
