Genius, Love and Friendship: Scarce Or Abundant?

February 12th, 2009 @ 8:58 pm by Elsa

Ask the collective

“Love is rarer than genius itself, – And friendship is rarer than love.” Charles Péguy, 1873-1914

Rather different take on love then the modern concept of there being plenty of everything for all.

Which perspective do you agree with (if either) and where is your Venus?

I don’t know about genius, but in my experience, finding a lover is a zillion times easier than finding a true friend. When it comes to love everything boils down to human nature and essential needs, friendship is treacherous waters with many conditions and motivations.

I have a well aspected Venus and I vote for abundance.

I don’t necessarily equate lover with love. – That is to say it is not automatic. I think genius is more rare than love but perhaps more common than true everlasting friendship. But how does one become a true lifelong friend without having infinite love for that person…

Ha ha skypie, I missed the genius part. I have Venus/Neptune, I like to get out of my head a lot.

I think genius is more rare than love or true everlasting friendship. I think the fact I’m the kind of person who doesn’t take an ending of a relationship or friendship as proof of lack of love, or however some people might take it.

All I know is that I have someone other than me who loves me and has an interest in my well-being and in my world that IS abundance.

…just thought of this some more. maybe that’s my capricorn moon/Sag ASC talkin’.

I come home from work and find a cold beer and leftover perogies in the fridge…my best friend calls to ask me how my day was and I am HAPPY. I’m like, wow this is the best.
Then again I was o my own at 16 and had to build my life from the bottom up so I learned early on to be happy if ONE person gave a shit.

…sorry more blabbing…
not just ‘learning early on.’ i mean, i felt it. i feeeeeeel it with that Venus/Neptune. it’s like i. am. it. i am love itself when i am that grateful.

Enough for everyone! I have Venus is Leo trine Jupiter. Though I understand that not everyone has enough, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that enough doesn’t exist. I can’t speak for anyone else, but there’s certainly always been enough for me, and I’m truly grateful.

If you substitute “more precious” for “rarer” it makes more sense to me. :)

With 12 house Venus I think I qualify for that one, too. In fact, just today I said to an old friend, ‘I’m not always here.’ He replied with, “I’ve known that since the day we met.”

Full agreement with the quote.

Though in my head I automatically fill in “true” love and “true” friendship and I would say that I tend to think most peoples love/friendship is superficial. There is a depth that makes it rarer then genius.

Love and friendship are very common. Thank goodness they are!

Genius is more scarce. It takes more courage to let your genius out, because it’s a solitary or individual pursuit. And it seems to flow out to other people, it’s not reciprocal like love and friendship. More selfless, in a way.

Libra Venus in the 2nd.

I say friendship is common, love less so and genius is a rare and wonderful thing!

My boyfriends were always my best friend until I met my now female best friend eight years ago. It was the first time I realised I could really trust women. That led to four very useful man free years where I just built and enjoyed wonderful friendships. I really discovered the healing power of friendship – this lovely unconditional bond that had nothing to do with providing sex in return for companionship and safety (not good!)

Venus in virgo 11th house sextile saturn in 9th and opp jupiter in 5th.

Venus in Leo conjunct Uranus – I have 2 best friends, my Aquarius husband, and my Taurus sister. I do not agree with this statement at all. Most people I know have strong support systems, whether it is a spouse, family, friends, or co-workers. I think it is a pretty cynical view of life, to be honest.

There are different types of friendship. Depends on what you mean. Concert between human beings and the need for it isn’t rare at all. Is he talking about “true” love or some perfected definition of friendship? I think love and friendship are more common than genius. I see love, I believe that you love the soldier, that some other people I know love each other. I see and experience friendship. Venus in Cancer in the 6th house.

I believe the reverse of the quote is true. genius is the rarest, love next then friends are plentiful. As long as you are willing to see that everyone has the potential for friendship. Love, is just quirky and shows up when it wants to. Genius, I know nothing. ;-)

genius doesn’t require compromise to exist. REAL friendship requires some. REAL, lasting romantic love requires a lot.

I agree with the quote.

Disagree with the quote completely. I have a infinite supply of love. I have been gifted with lifelong friendships.

I don’t agree with anything in that statement and I think the person who said it was acting kind of like a pompous, presumptuous, know it all. Venus in the 1st house in all charts, venus in Aries in the western chart.

Wow this is fascinating. I agree with the quote… although I think love is more rare than friendship but finding true friendship is more rare than genius. This kind of reminds me of another quote that I love “true love is like ghosts which everyone talks about but few have seen” La Rochefoucauld

Venus conjunct Pluto & Saturn in the 8th (I guess the astrology speaks for itself)

I have Venus in the 1st, square Neptune at the end of the 4th. I am a single mom raising my 13 yr. old son alone and he has Mercury/Venus/Sun cusp of 5th to 6th. My son asked me to help him select and pay for a beautiful Valentine bouquet he presented his 8th grade gal pal at school with. I felt proud that he was enjoying the day and was much more loved and accepted than I ever knew growing up. I have suffered from a lack of love until I became his mother.

this is a beautiful story, thanks for sharing Sherry. I found it inspirational, especially given that I am in the process of working to adopt an older child or sibling group from the American foster system. The last sentence in this story is so especially beautiful!
