bernard1.jpgMadoff Turned in by Sons After Confessing $50 Billion Fraud

David Voreacos and David Glovin write:

“Bernard Madoff’s sons turned him in to U.S. authorities after he confessed to them that his investment advisory business was “a giant Ponzi scheme” that cost clients $50 billion, a lawyer for the brothers said.

Mark and Andrew Madoff contacted authorities on the evening of Dec. 10 after their father admitted a fraud that led to his arrest yesterday by the FBI in Manhattan, according to a statement today by attorney Martin Flumenbaum, their lawyer. The brothers, who worked for their father, had no prior knowledge of the fraud, Flumenbaum said….”

This is another Pluto in Capricorn story as it shows the shadow side of big business but there is another wrinkle. The fact the sons turned him in boiled down to patricide. Kill (Pluto) the father (Capricorn).

Would you have turned in your father?

I wouldn’t need to turn MY father in because he hasn’t committed fraud however YES, I would turn THAT FATHER in if he were mine committing fraud. :D

I can only assume that I would because of a recent turn of events where this was turned around. I turned in my son the last time he made threats against his biological step-father (the man he calls dad and who has been the only father he’s ever known). This was just before Pluto moved into Capticorn but was in my husband’s 4th and my son’s 2nd. Granted there is a lot more astrologically to this than Pluto. But given that I felt it important enough to take action against my son, I would definitely, given the right set of circumstances, not feel I had to protect my father no matter what.

I think they had to if they were in the business, otherwise they would have been complicit and implicated when the feds caught up with them. A true no win situation for everyone. I am sure the father would have never told them unless he realized the game was up. Hard one – don’t know. If they had not turned them in the would have been in on the crime and part of the crime family then. No win.

I saw this article yesterday and the Pluto Cap seemed right on, but the Patricide angle is fascinating! Wow. In other Pl/Cap news: bomb in a bank in Oregon.

With my mercury and moon in libra, I would definitely want to turn him in, but in the end would not be able to decide.

hard to say. but he screwed his sons over, too, apparently.

i’d never imagine my father doing something like that. but, as cj says… maybe i would, with that father. it would depend on the nature of the relationship, i think.

it’s like… if i had a serial killer in the family (like the unabomber’s brother) i’d have to turn them in. basic humanity comes before family. but securities fraud is not nearly as noxious an offense. can ruin people’s lives, though. tricky tricky question.

I answered no only because I came across this in my own life years ago. My father used to “grow his own” and I knew it was illegal but I never saw him use it for anything but himself and friends. I guess I made a judgment call that is very different from our laws. I didn’t see him hurting or harming anyone except his own lungs. While that made me sad I guess I saw it clearly as “his life” and not mine and not society’s.

However, if my father was doing something that was harming someone else I would first talk to him about it. We have a very up front kind of relationship and I would tell him how upset it made me to see that he was that type of person. Then I would turn him in, in a heartbeat.

But then again he’s one of two parents that emphasized/taught me the “do no harm” “give kindness” and that’s who THEY are and so if they violated that I would call them on it.

I really don’t know.
If I were in the same business, I might feel morally obligated to but I would let my parent know first. If I wasn’t, I would probably just let them know how I felt about all this and let it go at that.

If I’ve profited from my father’s business acumen *ahem* , then I would have a hard time turning him in.

My Dad isn’t a money-grubbing crook, but if he was, yes I would turn him in. With a certain amount of relish too.
Ah daddy issues, will they ever go away?

As a Capricorn Girl, no and no again. Now my mother on the other hand…
