A Whiff Of Pluto in Capricorn Regarding Big Business… Unemployment

November 19th, 2008 @ 10:10 am by Elsa

Astrology in real life

genius.jpgMichael Lutin wrote on his site a last week, he felt that jobs were going to become precious. I agree with him and got wind of a conversation that ought to be a wake up call. If you prefer to tag me a “fear monger” go right ahead.

The individual in question is a high level manager in a publicaly held company. He was talking about how happy he was to see a whole bunch of his competitors go out of business some months ago mostly due high fuel costs. He said he wished the prices had stayed high just a little bit longer which would have seen some more businesses fail because it that were to happen, then what?

If that were to happen, he would have the unemployed lined up outside his door at which point he would hire just the cream of the crop… and here is the bit to take home – he said he’d be able to get rid of the “riff raff” where “riff raff” is anyone who slacks…. feels entitled etc.

I had to laugh because the day before I say a man in the gym wearing a t-shirt that said:

Genius by birth
Slacker by choice

If you’re one of those you’re going to be in big trouble going forward. I mean it’s comical, the level of denial. Comic and tragic I mean. The days of overblown anything are over can’t you see?

Who had NOT seem someone near them lose their job in the last 3 months?

Yes, folks will have to say what they mean and mean what they say. I welcome this. Here in Ohio people are doing their best to stay at their jobs. Good help is still very hard to find thank goodness. Lets hope the auto industry gets some help if they agree to be more innovative! Why completely throw away an American industry this huge? Haven’t seen any one lose their job yet but I do notice former slackers waking up to smell the coffee.

Yes. And personally, although I am gainfully employed and working harder than I ever have, personally, I’m questioning my own purpose, effectiveness, and, well- dreams- about what I want to do in this world. It’s wierd for me, that this intense soul-searching about employment and purpose should come up just as Pluto changes signs.

I am quite ready for and welcome pluto going in to cap. Change you can count on. I just realised that I have been so bored over the last few years with the way things were going. Just tired of all the inflation, navel gazing, hollywood trash, over expansion everywhere. I just wonder what Sag’s will do. They’ve been through 12 years of pluto in their sign. Just wondering, will they deflate? I know and luv a bunch of sag’s so I just wonder about them for some reason.

Michael is right! I’m four months out of a job. I was in publishing. 120 resumes, 35 interviews…8 hours a day, searching. I started going to open calls as a waitress…35 people in line. The other day there were 75 beautiful women with college degrees waiting at an open call at a bowling alley (this was a dive) for a server position. Just to be honest, I even found myself jealous of the women cleaning the toilets in a department store I went to, and found myself considering it a fair and good job. (which it is, but still I’m a hypochondriac, touching doorknobs in bathrooms is a feat for me) Just trying to say, anyone who has a job! Love it! It is PRECIOUS!!! I have never appreiciated the value of employment so much, in my entire life.

When I have to, I can work, but I honestly have a pretty crap work ethic.
Looking for a job now, though, and in this market I feel kinda hopeless. Ah, well.

YEP Exactly why I love a Good Recession or a prolonged Market correction.

It always shakes out the AMATEURS and the WANNA BEE’S from those who are really qualified and belong in an industry over the long haul.

When my pest control guy told me that he was no longer going to be spraying my house because he was going to be a Realtor, it was a sure sign to me that the market had peaked.

When it looks so easy that anyone can do it, the expansion is OVER.

This is different than being a slacker. I don’t know if you can ‘retool’ a slacker to be a worker. I think its genetic. I see it with the kids that intern for me. They either have a clue or not. And growing up might not help them get a clue because they surround themselves with ssimilar personalities. Just look at Congress lol.

I fear that the decrease in fuel prices will cause us to not maintain momentum in looking for a coherent energy policy. I hope we don’t repeat our denial of the 70′s.

Yep, know folks who have lost their jobs. :( I remember in Detroit in the early 80s it was really bad. I’m working right now at least and trying to donate to the local food bank, while I still can. They are absolutely swamped. :(

Angel Food is expanding a lot too, so if you know anyone who is hurting for groceries, the Angel Food folks are all over the US.

Our company has laid off something like 30% of its work force to date, and we expect more.

Yeah, it’s definitely out there. And the rest of us (it’s a consulting company) are scrapping for billable hours, because we think that’s our ticket to staying employed.

Working, working at keeping skills up to date, working at – finding work! That’s what it’s all about here.

Does someone gloating about their competitors going under ‘feel entitled’? What happens when his company goes toes up?

Quote of the day from the formerly big 3 Bailout hearings about GM mgmt coming into town in private planes:

Rep Ackerman said there was “a delicious irony in seeing private jets flying into Washington D.C. and people coming off them with tin cups in their hands

Running your own bizness is the ultimate reality show. Anyone who succeeds in a tough economy has has earned it in spades and luck IS the residue of hard work.

You must have come from one of those little league backgrounds where the moms didn’t let you keep score and everyone won. Unfortunately, real life isn’t like that.

Actually, my husband and I are employers– and with he economic stresses coming down the pike,, 2 months ago we DID fire the slacker. the one who was the bad apple, who was causing grief amongst OTHER staff members.. she had been with us almost 5 years and her sense of entitlement was huge– she came to work late, began to disrespect management and refused training when offered (highly recommend, that is..)– after much soul searching–OUT YOU GO. Times are tough. She was not puling her weight– We have a great staff now who appreciate HAVING A JOB and it’s a joy to go to work again–we all have to pull our weight..we all have to constantly market and work smarter and harder.. good for those proud slackers. I hope the have a lot of money saved up for when they are laid off.

There is a bigger picture here. I AM VERY MAD AFTER WATCHING MY FRIEND TODAY….
Pluto’s last hoorah for the ditching of legacy costs. I have watched quite a few people die.
It has a lot to do with working at a factory or around petrol products, caustic paints.

The big 3 don’t want a bail out. They can only get out of legacy costs by showing need.

Do you understand what that means ?

My friend who I took today for his get this nuclear scan is a retired auto worker he is dying from asbestos exposure. He is an example of legacy costs, his pension, his insurance. It is a game of smoke and mirrors. I am watching him get weaker and all he says is I am glad I worked for Ford.
I had a good life. These older folks knew the risk and being taken care of in old age was the payoff. Even if old age was not that high of a number. Many of them did it so there wife would be looked after. Its not there fault that Big Business underfunded the pensions.
They borrowed on the pension money and filing bankruptcy is the way to not have to take care of them. THATS WHY THE BIG 3 SHOWED UP IN PRIVATE PLANES..ITS THERE OWN NEPTUNE ILLUSION

Well no he doesn’t feel entitled. He thinks he runs a better business

Well, Kenneth Lay thought he ran a better a business, and said so. As did Bernard whatshisname over at Worldcom and a long list of other people, including Secretary Paulson, when he was at Goldman Sachs. Your friend may run a better business, I have no idea, but I have noticed that when they get to gloating, something bad tends to happen afterwards.

sort of like Toyota makes a better car…

Well, you know, the Japanese have always worked very hard to defend their auto manufacturers from all comers.

Anyone who succeeds in a tough economy has has earned it in spades and luck IS the residue of hard work.

We ain’t got to the bad part yet.

(Still assuming this was directed at me):You must have come from one of those little league backgrounds where the moms didn’t let you keep score and everyone won.

I had a friend who recently lost his job due to the company going out of business. Unfortunately he’s been spending a few months being picky and feeling entitled to a better job and he hasn’t found one so instead is trying to shake down his friends for money. I think people like him need to buck up and take what they can get while they can…

reality, i’m SO sorry to hear about your friend’s illness. :(

and yes, i’ve got friends who’ve lost their jobs. my gf’s husband has been out of work 6 months now, and layoffs are coming to her office but no news on who will get hit. they have 2 kids and are more than a little concerned.

my other friend’s office is in their THIRD round of layoffs this year. she’s in a good position, though, and her beloved boss made it through this round. but his boss did not.

sigh…

Some of these comments are just upsetting to me. Especially Ms. Scarlett (although you are more than entitled to your opinion). I’m hoping I’m just misunderstanding the tone, but when I hear a defense of these hyper-competitive principles, I have to admit, I just don’t get it.

My husband and I have had real job troubles, and still are. I am usually one of the most earnest and hardworking people at the places I’ve worked, so this is not a defense of ‘slackers.’

But, it seems there is something so much larger at work here! I don’t think our economic situation is a referendum on slackers. Productivity, as a whole, has gone up and up and up in the U.S. over the years. I know a lot of slackers, and yes, there is a sense of entitlement, but no larger a sense of entitlement than what I see in so many other types of people. We would all do well to examine our own areas where we feel entitled before we cast stones at others. It’s there, in all of us.

We have been on an ever-increasing spiral of competitiveness, survival of the fittest, and I think *that* is what this is a referendum on.

The survival of the fittest is no longer about individualism. We are learning that we are interdependent.

I think people who are championing this situation, thinking it is “separating the wheat from the chaff” are actually niave and contributing to the status quo. And I say that as someone who is without a doubt “wheat.” What comes first is an understanding of gratitude. What comes next is an understanding that we are interdependent. That means letting go of the social darwinism. Yuck.

What good does it do to be superior, if that means spending the next 20 years hovering in a corner of your bedroom with an assault rifle? That’s what I mean by interdependent.

Just my opinion, anyway.

Reality, I am sorry to hear about your friend. One more example of the high cost of production and technology that DISregards process as it effects human life and the environment that sustains or poisons us all. It’s all connected.

Pluto is viewed as Pele in a Hawaiian view of the stars. Pele is the Goddess of Fire, maker and re-maker of earth through volcanic means. Don’t mess with Pele she has a clear purpose.

Hey, it’s no problem. Slackers DO have it coming. But I think that’s only a small part – to me, the larger sense is that we ALL have it coming, and what is being dismantled is our princess-y attitude that we can afford to be divided and separated.

No one close to me yet, but I’m sure it’s coming. I just received a promotion but it’s been HARD as hell, although I am very grateful for it. My bf as well, we both are very fortunate to have stable jobs that we actually like (for the most part). I have worked estremely hard for this though and it wasn’t just handed to me. I have no tolerance for the slackers and in light of all that’s going on in the world, I don’t think they have much rope left. It’s sink or swim time for them, and pretty much everyone.

I have a college degree BS from Purdue big woop.
Was a HCRM for a business unit of 430 people.
We ran 3 shifts. Anything HR was my responsibility. They deleted the HCRM positions.
I worked 60 hours a week. I could write volumes on People issues in the workplace. Yah I am out of work in my field but not to worry. I grew up my entire life being warned about the great depression. I can survive on a waitress wages..
I just feel if you have an education and you know better YOU ABSOLUTELY have to use your knowledge to help others. The biggest crime is if you know something is wrong and you look the other way when you can make a difference.

One comment about slackers, I have never met any.
They did not stay employed with me for very long.
People who tried and did there best. They are really out there.

If you believe in your employees, train them and give them compliments only when they earn them and get there opinions to make the job more productiive. They will work with you as a team.

You issue discipline with fairness and consistency when you fire them they know its there own fault.

If you belittle them and eat in a seperate breakroom and they watch you text message all day then they just come to work .

My last month of work we had the highest rate of Proc for any unit, my bonus was more than my check. But if customers no longer place any orders it doesn’t matter how good you are.
You have to lay off HR me pink slips the the folks off then you pink slip yourself…LOL. Thats the way it goes.

Interesting. My soul-searching has a lot to do with how to motivate myself at a core level, and not just for the paycheck. I work with a lot of folks who are right out of college, and in some ways, yes, I would call them slackers. They do have a sense of entitlement, at least from my viewpoint, (25 years older). I am easily angered by them, and easily inspired too. I know I’m grooving when I’ve figured out how to tap into their genius and creativity. But it is hard work. And this is right where I am. HARD work. Truly, we are all in this together.

Believe in them. Set the bar higher for them.
Get there input and actually let them be part of the process. If you have low expectations
they will give you what you expect.
Do not compliment when they do not deserve it.
When they do something well or start to implement something properly make an example of them.
When they do something wrong ask them why and have them explain why they did it.
Sometimes having to explain a mistake makes them understand why it does not fit into the logical business plan and sometimes it makes you realize that the steps you are taking need to be modified. Slackers don’t have a chance with me..Verbally vocalize it as a team.
Set an example. NEVER ASK THEM TO DO SOMETHING THEY WOULDN’T SEE YOU DO YOURSELF..And remember people are not robots. Once they work for you something might happen in there life.
A person dies in the family, a love breakup.
Occassionly they are going to have a bad day.
You are older so they will expect some mothering. The younger generation respond to logic not I am your boss and you just do it.
I always used to say, If we fail we fail together and when we win we win because all of us did a great job. Here have a cupcake…LOL

And I would just like to ad. Yesterday evening where I live the moon was at 2 deg virgo and mars was at 2 deg sag..(my moon is in Sag so as it gets closer to my moon I get a little heated)
6 of my planets are in virgo and 3 are in almost a fire trine. The Mars sag is a time when my usual virgo sun can not fight the urges of my sag moon…AKA open mouth and talk a lot..
